Chapter 47 Agree to Divorce
Grace grabbed his hand pitifully, "Alex, it's all my fault..."
"I shouldn't have argued with Miss Johnson. She definitely didn't mean to upset me - she's just angry that I've gotten too close to you."
"Please don't blame her, okay? I... it hurts so much."
Alex pressed his lips together, his sharp jawline tensing slightly. "Grace, you don't need to speak up for her. Wrong is wrong."
With that, he had his assistant arrange for a caregiver and sent a stream of flowers and supplements to the hospital room.
Grace felt secretly pleased, not noticing the flicker of darkness in Alex's eyes.
For some reason, hearing Grace's words, his mind flashed back to Emily's lifeless expression from earlier.
A strange feeling rose in his heart - could this mean she still cared about him?
Otherwise, why would she provoke Grace and get into an argument?
Once this thought took root, it grew like wild weeds, impossible to suppress.
Alex stood up and tucked the blanket around Grace. "Rest well. I'll arrange the best medical team to take care of you. As for Emily, I'll talk to her."
A smile bloomed on Grace's pale face. "Alex, you're so good to me."
Half an hour later.
Alex drove straight back to the old mansion.
He wanted both to confront Emily and to verify that thought in his mind.
She... still cared about him.
The car sped down the road.
Before long, he was back.
However, he didn't expect that upon entering the living room, he'd see Emily and Margaret sitting on the sofa with a document spread out on the dark stone coffee table.
Emily's expression was calm, and when she looked up at him, there was no emotion in her eyes.
Instead, Margaret spoke first. "Oh, the busy Mr. Baker has returned."
Alex stepped forward, his sharp gaze immediately landing on the document - it was the divorce agreement from his study.
At the bottom, both he and Emily had already signed their names.
They were just one procedural step away from divorce.
Suddenly, he had a bad feeling.
"Emily, what's the meaning of this?" Alex's voice was low and dangerous.
Emily looked up at him. "There's no feeling left between us. Dragging this out doesn't benefit anyone. I've explained everything to Grandma. You don't need to worry about it anymore, and you don't need to keep pretending we're a loving couple."
Beside them, Margaret sighed helplessly.
So it had come to this after all.
Alex let out a cold laugh. When he picked up the divorce agreement, he noticed there was also a property division document underneath.
He paused, flipping through it, only to discover that Emily wasn't asking for much at all.
It was even less than the ten million dollars he'd offered to give her when he first proposed divorce.
Was she this desperate to get divorced?
Alex felt like there was a fire burning in his chest.
He slammed both documents on the table and spoke mockingly, "How noble of you. Isn't it all about the Baker family's money anyway? Why put on this act in front of Grandma? Giving up the position of Mrs. Baker, turning down billions in resources - what are you trying to prove?"
Hearing this, Emily gave a weak smile.
So in his mind, she'd only ever been after the Baker family's money from the very beginning.
Emily looked up at him, her voice as light as the wind. "I just want to get divorced quickly. I don't want to waste another half minute on you. If you think half the assets is still too much, I can take nothing. I'm fine leaving with nothing."
She didn't want to drag this out for even one more minute.
Alex watched her too-tired-to-argue expression and suddenly laughed coldly. "So eager to divorce - you've already found someone new, haven't you? Who is it, Matthew? He might not be able to satisfy you."
Emily's heart was pierced by needles again. Of course he went for the kill.
He knew perfectly well that she...Seeing Emily's face turn pale, Margaret got angry and struck Alex's leg with her cane. "You terrible boy! Even if Emmie has found someone new, you drove her to it by not cherishing her! Sign the divorce papers now and stop making my Emmie suffer with you."
Margaret was furious.
Both were dear to her - how could she not care?
But now... there was no way to fix things.
Alex's eyes grew darker as he stared at Emily's cold profile, feeling both angry and suffocated.
After a long moment, he suddenly spoke. "Ha, if you don't want the position of Mrs. Baker, plenty of people are lining up for it. I'll have someone expedite the divorce procedures!"
With that, he turned and headed upstairs. The study door slammed shut so hard the stairs shook.
Emily slowly lowered her eyes and let out a heavy breath. Her slender, jade-like fingers gently touched her belly. Baby, wait a little longer. Mommy will be able to take you away soon.
That evening.
Alex arranged for a lawyer. "Yes, carefully review the agreement. You handle the divorce proceedings."
After a pause, he added, "Especially the property division section - check it carefully to avoid any future complications."
By the last sentence, Alex was practically forcing the words through gritted teeth.
Over the next few days, Emily waited and waited, but heard no news about any progress on the divorce procedures.
She ran out of patience.
How much longer did she have to wait?
She simply grabbed her sketchpad and went downstairs, planning to ask Alex when he came home.
But she missed him every time.
Even when she deliberately got up early, Alex would just leave earlier.
Even if the company projects were busy, he wouldn't need to go in at dawn, would he?
Emily completely lost her patience. The next morning, she went to Baker Corporation.
She didn't believe it - if she couldn't catch him at home, she couldn't catch him at the office either?
Emily rarely came to the company.
First, because Alex didn't want to publicize their relationship.
Second, she didn't understand these business matters anyway.
But now, she didn't care about any of that.
The elevator to the CEO's office required central control access.
Emily walked up slowly. "I'm here to see Alex Baker."
The lobby receptionist was startled and looked her up and down. "Do you have an appointment?"
Emily frowned. "No."
"Without an appointment, you can't go upstairs to see Mr. Baker."
Seeing this, Emily wasn't bothered.
She took out her phone, her fingertip sliding across the screen, removing Alex from her blocked contacts.
The call was answered quickly.
Alex's low, cold voice came through. "What, changed your mind?"
Emily put the phone on speaker and looked calmly at the receptionist. "I'm in the lobby of your company. Are you not letting me in before we're even divorced?"
There was two seconds of silence on the other end. "I'll have someone activate the elevator for you."
Emily gave a cold laugh. "Hurry up. I don't have time to wait for you."
As soon as she finished speaking, she hung up without waiting for Alex's response.
The receptionist was utterly shocked, her jaw nearly dropping.
This... this was Mr. Baker's wife?!
Oh my god, she'd just asked the wife for an appointment. She was done for...
