Chapter 29 The Veil that Bleeds Light
Chapter 29 The Veil that Bleeds Light
The world snapped back into focus with a violent jolt stone, heat, and roaring flame swirling around Nyra as if reality had been torn and roughly stitched together again. Her boots scraped against the scorched floor of the chamber she’d stumbled into. The air was thick with smoke and magic, vibrating like a struck drumskin. Ember Watch was shifting again walls groaning, sigils trembling, corridors rearranging themselves with malicious intent.
The Hollow King wanted them separated.
He wanted her alone.
Nyra steadied her breath, though her pulse hammered with the aftershock of the illusion storm that had pulled Aric and Liora out of her grasp. One moment she’d felt Aric’s fingers brushing hers, anchoring her through the chaos. The next darkness, weightlessness, and a snap of cold magic severing the connection.
Now… silence.
Almost.
A faint hum pulsed at the edges of her senses Phoenix fire responding to danger. She touched her chest, letting the heat flare gently beneath her palm. “I’m not afraid of you,” she whispered into the darkness. “Not anymore.”
But the Hollow King’s reply vibrated through the chamber, a low, distant echo.
A lie is still a lie even when whispered to courage, Phoenixborn.
Nyra clenched her jaw. She refused to answer him.
A flicker of movement drew her attention. Shards of red light blinked like dying embers as a path formed between towering obsidian pillars. Ahead, a massive archway pulsed with violet flame the threshold to another trial. She could feel it tugging at her magic, coaxing her forward, promising answers wrapped in threat.
She stepped toward it.
But before she crossed the threshold, a voice—rough, familiar, alive shattered the silence.
“Nyra!”
Her heart lurched.
She spun.
Aric emerged from the shadows, panting, his tunic torn, his blade streaked black with ash. His eyes swept the chamber with frantic urgency before locking on her. “Thank the stars,” he breathed, stepping closer, the tension in his shoulders unraveling.
Nyra’s relief hit her so fiercely it hurt. “You’re gods, I thought”
“I know.” He closed the distance between them, hands briefly settling on her arms as if to confirm she wasn’t another illusion. “The corridor shifted. Something dragged me away from you. I fought through three different phantoms wearing your face.”
Nyra swallowed. “He’s getting bolder.”
“He’s getting desperate,” Aric corrected. “There’s a difference.”
Their eyes held, something warm threading between them, defiant against the cold magic pressing in. It wasn’t new—not really—but now, after so many close calls, it pulsed stronger. Visible. Real.
Aric stepped back only enough to let his hand brush hers again, deliberate this time. “We stay together. No matter what the Hollow King tries next.”
Nyra’s fingers curled around his without hesitation. “Together.”
The heat of her Phoenix fire intertwined with the steady solidity of his presence two forces syncing with startling ease. She didn’t run from it.
Not this time.
They turned toward the archway.
A faint voice echoed from beyond it distant, strained, familiar.
Liora.
Nyra’s heartbeat spiked. “We have to move.”
Aric nodded, grip tightening. “Then let’s go.”
They crossed into the violet flame.
\---
The world shifted.
Light bent, warping into spiraling corridors that stretched and twisted like rivers of smoke. Nyra felt pressure against her mind soft at first, then sharper, poking at her fears, her doubts, her most fragile memories.
The Hollow King whispered from the walls.
You reach for each other like drowning creatures. But love is a weight, Phoenixborn. And weights sink.
Aric’s hand gripped hers harder. “Ignore him.”
She tried.
But the corridor changed again.
Images flickered around them ghostlike, translucent.
Liora, trapped in a sigil cage.
Elias’s face twisted in death.
Her village burning.
Aric falling to shadow.
Nyra’s fire flared instinctively, melting the images away in bursts of molten gold. “He thinks he can break me with reflections.”
Aric smirked faintly. “He’s not very good at reading you.”
But when they turned the next bend, a new image formed Jonas.
Not Elias.
Not an illusion of Aric.
Jonas.
Standing in front of them. Breathing. Watching.
Nyra’s breath froze. “No”
Aric’s grip tightened. “Nyra. It isn’t real.”
But her heart screamed otherwise.
Jonas stepped forward, eyes reflecting the warm brown she once knew. “You left me,” he said softly. “You let me die alone.”
Nyra staggered, the old guilt ripping through her chest like claws. “That’s not You know that’s not true.”
But illusion-Jonas tilted his head, expression hollow. “You were always meant to survive while the rest of us burned. Even Elias. Even me.”
Aric stepped between them, blade raised. “Enough.”
The illusion didn’t acknowledge him. It only watched Nyra with a heartbreaking familiarity. “You should have saved me.”
Something inside her snapped old grief meeting new strength.
“No,” she whispered, Phoenix fire coiling up her arms. “I should have survived. And I did. And I will keep surviving. For all of us.”
She unleashed a burst of molten gold.
Jonas shattered into embers.
The corridor trembled walls cracking, shadows recoiling as if scorched.
The Hollow King hissed.
Your fire cannot rewrite truth.
Nyra exhaled shakily. “No. But it can burn your lies.”
Aric’s voice was soft when he touched her shoulder. “You did what you had to.”
Nyra nodded, swallowing the lingering ache. The illusion had hurt, but Aric’s steadiness anchored her. She leaned into his touch before she could second-guess it.
He didn’t move away.
\---
They pushed deeper until the corridor opened into a circular chamber. Liora stood at the center eyes closed, body suspended, encased in a sphere of violet flame.
“Gods,” Nyra breathed.
Aric moved forward. “Trap?”
“Worse,” Nyra whispered. “A siphon. It’s draining her mind into the Hollow King’s will.”
She reached out, Phoenix fire sparking along her fingertips.
But the moment her power touched the sphere, a violent surge of magic backlashed. The chamber shook, runes igniting like lightning veins across the walls. The Hollow King’s voice boomed.
Save her, Phoenixborn. Or save yourself. You cannot do both.
Nyra staggered. Sweat beaded her brow.
Aric grabbed her waist, steadying her. “Nyra don’t listen. We can break this. Together.”
The word struck her like a heartbeat.
Together.
She met his eyes dark, fierce, unwavering.
He believed in her.
He always had.
Nyra placed her hand over his, their fingers locking.
His breath caught.
Phoenix fire surged warmer, brighter, steadier infused with something new. Something born from trust, from fear, from the unspoken pull between them.
The sphere cracked.
Violet light shattered.
Liora collapsed, gasping, eyes wide with disorientation.
Nyra dropped beside her. “Liora, stay with me”
“I’m” Liora’s voice trembled. “I’m here. He tried to turn me against you. Showed me futures that weren’t real.”
Aric helped her sit up. “He failed.”
Liora’s gaze flicked between them lingering on their clasped hands. Something understanding softened her expression. “He did,” she whispered.
Nyra let out a shaky breath.
But the floor rumbled again.
Far in the distance, deep beneath Ember Watch, a roar of ancient magic stirred.
The Hollow King was waking.
Nyra rose slowly, fire simmering beneath her skin.
Aric took her hand again, unapologetically. “Ready?”
Nyra squeezed his fingers.
“We finish this,” she said. “Together.”
Liora picked up her staff, eyes burning with renewed resolve. “Then the Hollow King has no idea what’s coming.”
They stepped into the final corridor fire, shadow, and destiny waiting ahead.
And Nyra’s heart burned brighter than any Phoenix flame.
