Chapter 34 Thirty four

Chapter 34 Thirty four
The unstable sphere above Zariel’s head continued to expand. Each pulse distorted the air and sent a heavy vibration through the collapsing platform beneath them. Cracks shot across the stone surface in every direction. Dust rose in drifting clouds. The molten river below surged upward with each tremor, sending hot wind rushing against their faces.

Zariel steadied himself with a tense breath. His hands shook under the strain of holding the sphere together. The shadows inside it twisted like trapped storms, swirling rapidly, pressing against the unstable shell of energy that held them in place.

Lyra saw the way the shadows tore at him. It drained him in uneven bursts. His power flickered along his arms, revealing patches of skin beneath the armor that looked scorched and cracked. He was pushing well past his limit.

Eryndor stepped forward with careful control. His fire rose along his arms in quiet intensity, no burst, no flare, only concentrated power waiting to be unleashed. His wings shifted slightly behind him, not for flight, but for balance against the shaking platform.

Lyra moved beside him. Her shadow gathered along her legs and arms, anchoring her to the unstable stone. She felt the vibration under her boots and knew the platform would not hold long.

Zariel’s voice strained as he spoke. “I told you. If I fall, everything falls. That is the price of balance.”

Eryndor did not look away. “Balance does not require destruction. This is your choice. You chose collapse.”

Zariel lowered his gaze for a moment. Something tired moved across his expression. It lasted only a second before he lifted the unstable sphere higher, raising it toward the cracked sky. “You want to stop me. Then stop this.”

The sphere pulsed once, swelling wider. The shadow inside the sphere surged violently. A thin burst of dark energy leaked from its outer shell and shot upward, tearing a fresh gash in the sky above them. The sky itself shuddered.

Lyra’s breath hitched. “It will explode soon. We have to strike before he loses control of it.”

Eryndor stepped ahead of her. “Stay behind me when it ruptures. Use my fire to shield your shadow.”

Lyra did not argue. She moved closer to his side and prepared her power.

Zariel’s sphere flickered again. The pulsing grew faster, irregular, almost frantic. He gritted his teeth as he forced his power into the core of the unstable mass. His shoulders lowered under the strain.

Another deep tremor passed through the realm, stronger than before. The platform under them lifted at one corner and dropped sharply on the other. Eryndor grabbed Lyra’s waist to steady her as the shift threatened to pull her off balance.

The stone groaned. A long crack split beneath Zariel’s feet, running from one edge of the platform to the other. He ignored it entirely.

Eryndor lifted his voice. “Let it go, Zariel. Release it now, and we can still contain the blast.”

Zariel did not look at him. His gaze was locked on the sphere above his head. “You cannot contain this. You cannot even understand it.”

Lyra stepped forward. “You have lost control of it.”

Zariel’s voice dropped. “I can still win.”

Eryndor raised both arms. His fire intensified. Heat grew around him in a steady burst.

Lyra lifted her dagger. Her shadow condensed into a needle-like shape around the blade, crafting it into a precise weapon meant for piercing weakened energy.

Zariel lowered one hand from the sphere. The unstable mass wobbled immediately. A ripple moved across its surface. The shadows beneath the shell clawed against the edges.

He pointed his free hand at them. His voice trembled with strain. “Come then. Stop me.”

Eryndor moved first. He surged forward with a controlled blast of fire that lifted him from the ground. His wings flexed as he launched straight toward Zariel.

Lyra followed him with swift, grounded steps. Her shadow poured over the cracks beneath her feet, reinforcing each placement just long enough for her to push forward.

Zariel thrust the unstable sphere forward. The surface of the sphere stretched, bending and warping under the pull. A surge of shadow energy blasted outward in a chaotic burst, hitting the platform and sending fragments flying in every direction.

Eryndor raised a wall of fire to shield them from the shards. Lyra ducked under his arm as debris clattered against the flames.

Zariel took a step backward, pushed by the force of his own unstable power.

Eryndor seized the opportunity. He released a pulse of fire that struck the lower part of the sphere. The impact sent a shock through Zariel’s arm. The sphere flickered violently.

Lyra sprinted forward, dagger raised, aiming for the weakest point in the swirling shadows.

Zariel saw her. His eyes widened with alarm. He raised his free hand to block her.

The sphere above him pulsed in a sudden, violent wave.

The burst knocked Lyra off her feet. The impact threw her sideways across the platform. She slid toward the broken edge until she caught herself at the last moment. Her fingers clung to the rough stone. The molten river below lit her face in harsh orange light.

Eryndor spun toward her, panic rising in his chest.

Lyra shouted before he could move. “Finish it. I am fine.”

He hesitated for only an instant, then turned back to Zariel.

Zariel struggled to control the sphere. His arms shook. His shoulders trembled. The shadows inside the sphere swelled dangerously.

Eryndor charged again.

Zariel forced both hands upward and pushed the sphere into the air. For a moment, it steadied above him, held by sheer force of will.

Eryndor reached him.

He struck the core of the sphere with a concentrated burst of Phoenix fire.

The sphere ruptured.

The explosion that followed shook the entire realm.

A wave of shadow burst outward in a violent ring. Eryndor was thrown backward across the platform. Lyra felt the shock hit her chest like a physical blow.

Zariel dropped to his knees. The blast tore through his armor and flickered through his form, leaving his shadow aura in shreds.

Eryndor hit the stone hard and pushed himself upright. The explosion had weakened him, but he still held enough strength to rise.

Lyra scrambled to her feet and ran toward him. The platform continued to crumble under her boots, but she reached him in time to catch his arm.

Zariel staggered to his feet. His right arm hung loosely at his side. His face had lost all color. His eyes were half shadow and half something else. Something frayed.

He looked at them both, and his voice broke. “You should have let it collapse.”

Eryndor stepped forward. “It is not your decision anymore.”

Zariel took one step. Then another. His legs buckled. His knees struck the broken stone. A deep fissure opened beneath him. He fell forward, bracing himself with one hand, barely keeping himself from sinking through the crack.

Lyra felt her breath catch. “He is losing what little control he had left.”

The platform shifted again. Larger sections fell away. The molten river surged higher, climbing the base of the platform like a rising tide.

Zariel lifted his head one last time. His voice was barely audible. “If I fall, the realm falls with me.”

Eryndor’s fire rose along his shoulders. Lyra’s shadow grew darker around her.

The final choice stood between them.
