Chapter 33 Thirty three

Chapter 33 Thirty three
The platforms drifted apart in slow, grinding movements that sent deep vibrations through the air. Each shift felt like a warning. The realm was holding itself together by instinct alone, as if it resisted breaking until the last possible moment. Heat from the molten river rose in steady waves. It reached the level of the platforms now, close enough to send orange light along the undersides of every remaining stone.

Eryndor and Lyra stood side by side on their shrinking fragment. Cracks spread beneath their feet, thin at first, then deeper. The edges of the platform crumbled in short bursts, each fall punctuated by the distant roar of molten fire swallowing broken fragments.

Across the gap, Zariel prepared himself on his own platform. Shadows spiraled around him in uneven arcs. His power did not flow smoothly anymore. It twisted in abrupt surges as though a part of it resisted his commands. The realm’s collapse had destabilized everything he relied on.

Eryndor took a steady breath. “We move together.”

Lyra nodded. “We end this while we still have ground to stand on.”

The platform under Zariel pitched slightly to the side. He adjusted with a single step, his expression unreadable. The flicker of pain across his features lasted only a moment, but it told Lyra enough. He was pushing beyond what his weakened form could handle.

The distance between the platforms closed when the drifting stones shifted again. Eryndor took the opportunity immediately. He leapt first, wings spreading wide. Lyra followed close behind, using the stable currents of his fire to carry her across. They landed on a wider platform positioned directly between them and Zariel.

The stone groaned under their weight. Dust rose from fresh cracks.

Eryndor did not wait. He stepped forward, closing the distance. Fire built along his arms, gathering strength but held in control. He did not throw the energy yet. He kept it close, preparing for a direct clash.

Lyra moved beside him. Her shadow rose around her in sharp, thin lines. Her dagger gleamed in the fractured light. She kept her eyes locked on Zariel, watching for the slightest shift.

Zariel raised his hands slowly. The shadows around him grew thicker, forming a dense layer of energy across his chest and arms. His voice carried clearly as he spoke. “You are too late. The collapse has already reached the core.”

Eryndor kept walking forward. “Then we take you down before everything breaks.”

Zariel’s gaze shifted to Lyra. “You still stand against your own blood.”

Lyra did not look away. “You stopped being worthy of my loyalty the moment you chose destruction over your people.”

Zariel’s jaw tightened. His aura flared once, stronger than before, but still unstable. The light around him dimmed when the shadows condensed into a concentrated sphere of energy held above his right palm. The sphere spun rapidly, generating a low hum that vibrated across the platform.

Lyra recognized the move. “He is forming another concentrated blast.”

Eryndor angled his body forward, ready to intercept. “Then we meet it.”

Zariel thrust his hand downward. The sphere expanded in a sudden burst and surged toward them in a wide line of force that cracked the platform in half. The blast rushed forward with enough pressure to tear stone apart.

Eryndor reacted instantly. He raised both arms, and fire erupted outward in a broad arc. The flames met the shadows head-on. The clash sent a shock wave across the battlefield. The air distorted. The platform shook.

Lyra added her power at once. She stepped beside Eryndor and channeled her shadow into the fire, strengthening the barrier. Their combined energy held against Zariel’s attack, forcing the shadow wave to slow, then break apart into fragments that scattered into the air.

Zariel exhaled sharply. His power flickered.

Eryndor did not wait. He advanced. Fire trailed behind him as he moved. Each step cracked the surface beneath his feet. Lyra followed in sync, her shadows curling behind her like dark ribbons.

Zariel lifted both arms again and gathered the fractured remnants of his aura. He hurled another wave of shadow at them, narrower but more focused. Eryndor raised a shield of fire, and the blast struck it with enough force to push him backward a step.

The ground behind Eryndor broke and fell away.

Lyra reached for him and braced her weight against his back, preventing him from sliding toward the edge. The fire shield faltered but did not fall.

Zariel’s voice rose again. “You cannot keep this up. Every second drains the realm further.”

Lyra pushed forward. “Then stop forcing it to collapse.”

Zariel’s expression darkened. He summoned another attack.

Before he could release it, Eryndor broke through the lingering shadows from the previous blast. He surged forward with a burst of flame that cleared the air between them. His wings flared behind him, lifting dust and smoke into swirling patterns.

Lyra moved with him, advancing in the space carved by his fire.

They closed the distance to Zariel.

Zariel stepped backward and shifted his stance. He raised a hand and created a wall of shadow that rose from the fractured stone. The wall blocked their path completely.

Eryndor did not slow. He struck the wall with a blast of fire that cracked its surface. Lyra followed by driving her shadow into the fracture. The impact shattered the barrier, sending fragments of dark energy scattering like ash.

They stepped through the break.

Zariel’s aura surged violently. His body trembled under the strain. He lifted both hands and gathered a final concentration of energy in his palms. The shadows pulsed rapidly, spinning into an unstable sphere. It sparked with stray bolts of dark light.

Lyra braced. “This one will break everything left.”

Eryndor tightened his grip on her hand for an instant. “Then we finish it before he releases it.”

Zariel thrust the sphere upward. The shadows swelled, swelling past his shoulders, forming an unstable mass that threatened to tear itself apart.

The ground beneath all three of them cracked with deep, echoing groans. The platform tilted. A corner fell away into the molten river, sending a plume of smoke upward.

Lyra steadied her feet. “We need to push him to his limits now.”

Eryndor nodded once. “Together.”

They advanced again.

Zariel held the unstable sphere above his head. It shook violently, the edges fraying like torn smoke. He steadied it with both hands.

Eryndor raised his fire.

Lyra lifted her shadow.

The final confrontation was seconds away, and the realm shook from the core as if preparing for the last collapse.
