Chapter 108 108

Chapter 108 108
Danica's POV

"She's just an acquaintance"

That was the one response I expected but still didn't expect to hit a painful nerve.

"I guess she's just so special that you can't even tell me how you met or who exactly she is to you?" I muttered, my voice cracking beneath the fierce defence edge I had up.

And the last draw was when he didn't respond. That silence, as short as it was, said so many things that made me feel like the version of myself who was twice rejected brutally. Except, this hurt more than those two times. Or maybe it's just my jealousy speaking?

I didn't press further, and he said nothing in response to my silence as well. He just watched as I walked out of his presence until I was out of his sight.

The entire facade I had on in front of him wore out as soon I stepped out of the room, but I didn't stop walking. And he didn't even come after me

I wiped an imaginary tear off as I stormed into my own room. Since Alexander seemed so impenetrable, I'll just go after his little 'Martha'.

I took a quick shower, ignoring the dull ache in my shoulder blade and my spine. I chose a bold red dress. Nothing professional. Just daring.

From the window of my room, I saw Martha walking towards a brand new SUV, with Killian following behind her, his steps screaming invisible hesitation. I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from giggling.

Looks like this would be easier than I expected.

Just to pull the devil by its tail, I chose the moment to call out to him.

"Scarface!" He looked up immediately towards my window. He didn't even have to look around much. He knew I was the only one who ever called him that.

I smiled and did a tiny wave before turning to walk out of my room.

I was downstairs within three minutes and forty five seconds precisely. And he waited, even when Martha dimmed it unnecessary. He still did.

I literally met them in the middle of an argument.

She must really hate my guts. But too bad, the feeling was so mutual.

"Are you going somewhere?" Killian asked after a beat or two that passed while he took in my appearance.

"Do you go around giving people names?" Martha lashes out immediately. "She just called you Scarface and you're just going to tolerate that?" She added, shooting him a glare like she truly cared.

But even a blind person could tell she was just complaining to spite me, not because she actually cared about Killian.

"Yes I am. I don't particularly mind. She's permitted to call me whatever she likes on any occasion. I only wonder why you're suddenly interested in me now" Killian responded almost immediately and oh, if her reaction wasn't so pleasing to watch right now.

"And when do you talk back at me?" She retorted sharply, trying hard not to look like a pushover.

"Yes, Killian. I'm actually heading out real quick, but I probably can't since you're not even here to escort me" I chose the moment to respond to his question, leaving him no choice but to ignore Martha's outburst.

"You don't have to cancel anything for that reason. I will escort you if you want me to" Killian said and my eyes lit up.

"Really?" I muttered, then allowed my smile to fade as my gaze met Martha.

"But what about her? Weren't you going to escort her before I called out to you?" I asked and he gave me a little nod of reassurance.

"It doesn't matter. Nothing is more important than escorting you on an outing. You probably have a few things to purchase for the clinic, who am I to stand in the way of that?" He said and I smiled in response.

"Thank you, Killian" I murmured and he gave me a gentleman bow.

"You won't dare to do that, Killian. You're just going to leave me hanging here? To follow this bitch?" Martha yelled, fuming with unmatched anger.

I was fighting the urge to stick my tongue at her until Killian turned to face her.

"I will... That's exactly what I'll do" He said without remorse, making my heart swell.

Maybe if Alexander was a bit like Killian right here, maybe I won't be here causing a scene that would earn me one extra vengeful enemy.

But that's the thing. I don't particularly care right now. I just wanted to distract myself from whatever I felt when Alexander went silent on me, probably just to defend his little guest, and this is my way of getting that much needed distraction. Stepping on her toes. Making her fume.

It was working. I felt a bit better, knowing someone at least took my side over hers.

Killian soon left her standing and chose to walk me towards a different car.

I stopped walking halfway and he paused to look back at me, silently asking why I suddenly stopped.

"You know what? I think we should go with this. There's no need to get something else since this one is so within reach" I muttered, pointing at the sleek SUV.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, you fucking bitch?!" She yelled and I frowned in a fake yet genuine concern.

“I thought your outing gets canceled since you can't go as long as no one escorts you? You said it yourself” I muttered innocently.

Her eyes rolled back so hard as she scoffed, her anger at the brink of explosion. Before she could get herself together, I made my way into the car's backseat.

Killian did my seatbelt, shut the door, then went around to get in the driver's seat.

“You bastard, consider yourself fired as of today, you lowlife!” I heard Martha yelling and I sighed, relaxing into the chair to think about what exactly I was heading out to do, clad in a smoking hot red dress.

“You didn't ask me to escort you because you really have somewhere important to be, did you?” Killian asked and I blinked twice, flustered.

“Uhm, maybe? So what? You played along, didn't you?” I defended and he shrugged.

“I don't have any regrets right now. But I do want to know where exactly I'm driving you to” he muttered and I couldn't help the smile that formed at the corner of my lips.

“Surprise me?”
