Chapter 48 She Was Here!
Chapter 48 She Was Here!
Detective Harris's POV
And here I was, seated in my office, struggling to make sense of two murder cases. I wasn’t exactly in the best position to turn down what might be an opportunity—even from a distance.
Without saying another word, I instantly ended the call and just leaned back into my chair. I sat there in silence. I didn’t move, I didn’t blink much. I was just thinking.
My jaw tightened as I stared at the transparent glass door in front of me. Officers were busy in the main office just outside mine.
“This is not normal…” I muttered underneath my breath.
My heart wasn’t racing, but my mind was busy with several crazy thoughts.
I just couldn't think about why someone would come into a station and refuse to step inside.
My fingers kept tapping against the desk again and again.
I didn't know what to do—if I should just step out to meet the person or ignore it like I didn't even pick the call in the first place.
However, something inside of me felt uneasy. Like when you walk into a dark room and you feel someone is watching you from a corner.
I couldn’t really explain the feeling I was getting from this situation, but I knew one thing, and that's the fact that this was somehow connected to something. Maybe Big Jay, maybe just something else.
But deep down, my heart was invested in this and it didn't feel random at all.
This was when I finally stood up, “Alright,” I sighed, “Let’s see what this is.” I exclaimed and walked out of my seat.
As I stepped out of my office and was about to leave the main office, I suddenly bumped into one of the junior assistants rushing past me. He seemed in a hurry, probably delivering something.
“Oh God, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, sir—” he kept apologizing, bowing his head repeatedly.
He hadn’t seen me coming, so I didn’t take it personally. Still, the way he kept bowing made the whole thing feel unnecessary.
I didn’t even realize when I apologized as well for not watching where I was going.
Just as I turned to walk away, I suddenly noticed the file in my hand. It was meant for the research and study team—I was supposed to deliver it to their table right before I stepped out.
I immediately paused and turned back. “Hey,” I called to the junior intern I had just bumped into.
I didn’t know his name, so I simply referred to him by the color of his shirt. “Blue shirt, come here!” I said firmly.
He stopped immediately and rushed back to my side, “Yes sir?” he answered quickly.
I didn't hesitate, I immediately handed him the file. “I need you to cross check the hospital visitor log on this file again. Check every name, every time stamp. I don’t care how long it takes. If something doesn’t match, you bring it straight to me. Don’t assume anything. Don’t skip anything. You hear me?”
The intern nodded quickly. “Yes sir.” he answered dutifully.
Then I leaned closer slightly. “And don’t talk about it with anyone. Not even casually. I'm supposed to deliver this to the research and study team today, but I'm not sure about something yet, so you must be careful with this, you hear me?” I added smoothly.
He swallowed hard, then he nodded quickly, “Understood sir.”
Without speaking, I carefully gave him one last serious look before slamming the file into his hand and walked away.
My steps were slow but steady, but my mind was preparing for whatever I was about to go and meet outside this office.
I walked to the reception and met Lucy seated in her position just as expected, “Lucy, where is she?” I asked as I approached her desk, my eyes were already scanning the area quickly.
Lucy looked uneasy. “Sir… she just left.” She said softly.
I froze. “She what?” My voice suddenly dropped low.
Lucy nodded nervously. “She said she wasn’t safe. She kept looking over her shoulder. She said someone was after her life and she couldn’t stay.”
My expression changed completely.
I suddenly became even more confused, “After her life?” I repeated slowly. “Did she look injured? Was someone following her? Did you see anyone suspicious behind her?” I didn't even know when all the questions poured out of my mouth.
However, Lucy just shook her head quickly. “No sir… she was just… scared.”
I clenched my jaw. This is only getting worse by the second.
I became totally restless and multiple thoughts suddenly flooded my head.
I leaned into Lucy's table and began to throw questions at her, fast and sharp, like bullets fired from a gun, leaving no room for hesitation or break.
“What did she look like?” I asked sharply.
Lucy blinked. “Average height… dark hair… she was wearing a scarf.”
“Age?”
“Maybe late twenties… I’m not sure.”
“Have you seen her before?”
“No sir.”
“Did she mention why she needed to see me specifically?”
“No sir. She was just scared.”
“Did she look injured?”
“No.”
“Was she shaking?”
“Yes… she was trembling all the time she was here.”
“Did she say who was after her?”
“No sir. Ste didn't say any name.”
