Chapter 49 Hard Proof
Chapter 49 Hard Proof
Detective Harris's POV
“Did she say who was after her?”
“No sir. Ste didn't say any name.”
I suddenly let out a loud sigh I never knew I was holding, then I ran a hand through my hair in frustration.
“So she walks in here, says her life is in danger, refuses to give a name, refuses to come inside, and just walks out?”
Lucy nodded helplessly. “Yes sir.”
I exhaled hard. “Unbelievable…”
I was really angered that I didn't even know what else to say, so I just hissed and turned around to leave.
But just as I was about to walk away, Lucy suddenly gasped. “Sir! Wait!” She called out sharply.
I turned back immediately. “What?”
Lucy quickly opened her drawer. “She left something… she said nobody else must read it except you.”
“She left something? What’s that?” I asked, leaning closer, refusing to let a single detail escape me.
In that second, Lucy had already pulled out a folded piece of paper from her drawer and handed it to me carefully. “She was very serious about it. She said you must read this.” Lucy explained.
I didn’t even respond to her. I just grabbed the note immediately, my heart beating a little faster as I unfolded the note right there at the reception desk
My eyes moved very fast as I read through the few lines of sentences on note which says: “I know you think I'm crazy, but my mother in law killed my husband. You must take her down, please, for the sake of Charlie.”
I froze.
My eyes slowly read it again and again.
“My mother in law killed my husband…?” I thought
“For the sake of Charlie…?” Another thought.
My jaw tightened at once, and my heart skipped countless times before I could even catch my breath.
I read the note again then I glanced up and the first name that came to my mind was Shenell.
Her name suddenly began to echo loudly in my head and my mind started connecting dots fast.
Well if it was Shenell that came to drop this letter, why wouldn't Lucy recognize her?
“Who doesn't know what Shenell looks like?” I thought.
I didn't even know when I glanced at Lucy and asked sharply, “The woman that dropped this…was it Shenell from the Charlie Carter's case?”
Lucy looked up for a second, then she shook her head sharply, “No. If course if it was Mrs. Shenell, I would've said so. It wasn't Shenell. It was someone totally different.”
Lucy's response caught me off guard.
If it wasn't Shenell then who could it be?
I don't want to believe that Charlie had another woman again aside from his actual wife Shenell and his secretary mistress, Zoey.
“This is crazy!” I thought
I suddenly turned sharply to Lucy. “Call security. Now,” I said, my tone firm and urgent.
Lucy didn't waste a second, she quickly grabbed the phone from her desk and started to dial the security number.
Then I continued, “Inform the security team that I want CCTV footage of every single person that walked into this building within the last one hour. Every angle. Every camera. I want it in my office immediately.”
Lucy nodded quickly and made the call.
I stood there, lost and confused, gripping onto the small note tightly as if my life depended on it.
If this note wasn't from Shenell… then things just changed completely.
But then again, I hate assumptions.
I needed proof.
Hard proof.
And only the CCTV footage can give me that.
But still at that, something inside me felt uneasy.
Something about the timing. Something about the message. It felt desperate… but also calculated.
And as I turned around and walked back toward my office, one thought kept repeating in my head.
Something is very, very wrong.
And this is bigger than I thought.
