I murdered him.

Chapter 77:

Kaya's pov.

“Tessa? Tessa! Please don't do this!” I called out, touching her and trying to revive her but she did not open her eyes. She was not even moving, she just lay there lifelessly. I listened for a heartbeat and luckily, she was still breathing.

I don't know where the strength and courage came from but I lifted her off the floor and headed for the hole. I was forced to stop in my tracks when I heard screams coming from outside.

Many of the women started to run back into the house, crying and wailing from fear and agony.

“Don't go out! They're killing them! They're slicing their throats!” They yelled in terror as they came back into the blazing building.

My heart sank into the stomach as the realization that I might not leave this place alive struck me. Elior was already crying as the heat was getting to him and Tessa was still unconscious. How was I supposed to handle this situation?

Turning around, I found lots of women sitting with their children, including Marta. They have all lost hope and are now wallowing in self pity, awaiting death. The roof had started to fall, killing some people and in no time, the whole place would be burnt to the ground.

Seeing everyone already giving up broke my heart and made me wonder if they had no will to live. My only will you live is my son Elior, and that is enough reason for me to try my best to get out of here.

I couldn't help but feel anger when I saw them all sitting there quietly, crying and awaiting death. What if the men were stuck somewhere and couldn't defend us? Would they just sit and die?

I struggled with Tessa and managed to get her to a safe spot where the fire hadn't gotten to yet. Then I went to stand in front of the wailing women.

“What are you doing!?”

They all turned to look at me.

“Look around! A lot are dead already, so what are you going to do? Sit back and wait to join them!?” I paused to observe the expression on their faces.

“Can't you at least try to defend yourselves? Can't we all try to fight our way out of here instead of sitting here to mourn our deaths?” I asked but they all threw hateful glares at me.

“We could at least try to attack these men? What are you afraid of? Don't you want to be considered heroes for saving your children's life? The men are out there fighting for us and we'll just sit here and let their efforts be in vain?”

“We have to try at least?”

“What is this slave saying? How can women fight?”

“We don't have weapons or the outfit for battle. How do we face those gruesome men out there?”

They began to murmur, throwing insults and abuses my way. And as if he heard it all, Elior began to cry. I tried patting him to stop him from crying but his cries became louder and louder.

Marta got up and walked towards me, she was bruised already. “Kaya, there's nothing we women can do but wait. So please, stop trying to encourage us.”

I was upset at her words. How could she even thinking like that?

“You all want to die? Fine then! You can go ahead and die! But I will not subject my baby to torture.” I snapped at them all and walked towards Tessa.

“Come on, I have to get us out of here.”

I was about to pick her up when I saw a dagger lying a few feet away from me. I went to pick it up and then tucked it away in my dress before going to pick Tessa up.

The other women watched in amazement and hate as I headed towards the hole in the wall which had gotten wider due to the spreading fire. The soldiers did not bother to come in, they were standing outside watching us burn.

I had summoned the courage to step out when Alpha Silas’ soldiers invaded the attackers and a battle ensued. Most of the Alpha's soldiers entered the wrecked safe house and began to move the women and children out in a hurry.

I was relieved. I joined the crowd immediately, heading in the direction they were pointing us to. Tessa was heavy and slowed me down but I wasn't willing to stop. I eventually fell down with her, and Elior screaming.

“Oh no, come on Tessa, I need you to open your eyes.” I sighed, struggling to get up.

“Hey!” A loud, menacing voice called out and I turned around only to see one of the attacking soldiers heading my way. I looked around for help but no one was around to help.

“You're one of them huh? I haven't seen you around.” He said hatefully.

“I will do the honours of ending your life today.” He raised his sword to strike me but I pulled out the dagger I had hidden in my dress and dug it into his abdomen.

He groaned painfully, his sword falling from his hand. I took the dagger out but planted it inside him again. His blood splattered all over my face and I gasped, letting go immediately.

I was overwhelmed with shock when I realized what I had done. All my life, I have never murdered anyone, but today, I did and I watched his lifeless body drop to the floor.

I shivered from fear, moving away. Tessa whimpered on the floor, slowly opening her eyes. She looked around in fright, until her eyes landed on the dead body.

“Oh my! Did you kill him?” She asked but I helped her up instead of answering her question.

“Let's go! We have to get out of here before they find us!” I told her and we started running, although she was a bit slow and weak.

“She killed Umar! She killed him!” I heard someone yell out and when I turned, a bunch of soldiers were on our trail.

“Run Tessa! Run!!” I screamed.
