Chapter 117 The Weight of Truth
Chapter 117 The Weight of Truth
Elizabeth almost dropped the tray. How could her friend be dead, and worse, killed by Dave himself? She knew her brother was not a calm man, just like Jonathan, but Jonathan would never hurt her. So she couldn’t believe that Dave would have killed the woman he intended to marry.
“Dave! Don’t joke about that.” Jonathan scolded him.
“I’m not joking. I planned a surprise for her. I went there early on Tuesday. I knew it was her day off. I wanted to give her the ring and spend the day fucking the woman who was going to be my fiancée. But she was already tired and well fucked, by the looks of it. After all, she was in bed with the guy who picks up that old man who studies with Elizabeth. I should have done what you did — gone every day and kept a close eye on her. But I trusted her. I believed she was different from the women my father knew. But he’s right… Except for you, Elizabeth. I’ve never seen anyone so naive, so pure of heart. Forgive me, my sister, for all the times I hurt you on our father’s orders. I could have protected you, but I didn’t have the head I have today.” Dave let out a loud laugh. He laughed, cried, and talked about things from the past. The alcohol made him incoherent.
“Dave, did you kill Milly? How could you, my brother?” Elizabeth said and started to cry.
“How could I? How could she betray me? Sleep with someone else after everything we were living through, after saying she loved me? She went to bed with another man! I didn’t want to hear any explanations. I pulled out my gun and shot them right there. I used up all the bullets I had on the faces of those two!”
Elizabeth ran out of the room and Jonathan went after her.
“Elizabeth, are you feeling okay?”
“Jonathan… He killed her!” Elizabeth said through sobs and hugged Jonathan.
He stayed with her in his arms for a while. He thought about the Milly he had met. Despite her spontaneous way, she seemed genuinely involved with Dave. He had changed and was willing to take the relationship seriously.
“Eliz, I’m going to investigate this! I don’t think Milly actually betrayed your brother. I’ll look into it deeply. Don’t worry.” Jonathan hugged her even tighter. They helped Dave lie down and left him sleeping under Adam’s supervision.
A few days later, Elizabeth had finally graduated. She could now even pursue a college degree if she wished. Jonathan left work and went to the adult education center. He would pick up Elizabeth’s transcript and certificate of completion. She didn’t want to participate in the graduation ceremony or return to the place after what she had learned. The death of the only friend she had made affected her deeply.
He was waiting when Mr. Parker arrived. He also hadn’t attended the last week of classes. He was in mourning for the loss of his grandson.
“Jonathan, it’s been a while since we last saw each other. How are you?” The old man greeted him with a handshake. He even looked older than the previous week. The loss of his grandson had devastated the family.
“Mr. Parker, I’m fine. And you?”
“Getting by… Ever since my grandson left us, my family has been destroyed. My daughter is living on medication.”
Jonathan felt the heavy blow of knowing that Dave had taken the life of someone who probably didn’t deserve it.
“Mr. Parker, I’m very sorry for your loss. Do you have any idea who did this?”
“Well, I have suspicions, but… No! I shouldn’t say anything.” Parker knew about Dave and Elizabeth’s family connection. He didn’t want to make an accusation and then hurt Elizabeth or end up paying for talking too much.
“Sir… You can trust me.”
“Jonathan, Milly and my grandson left here together and both disappeared. A neighbor told me there was strange activity at her house that day and he even saw my grandson’s car, but he doesn’t know anything else. I couldn’t even give him a decent burial, but I know he must be dead. So I immediately thought of Milly’s boyfriend. I know he’s your brother-in-law.”
“I understand. I’m not defending him, but that doesn’t mean anything.”
“I agree, but my son was receiving some calls and the day before he was killed, a strange man came to my house. He spoke with him for a bit and my grandson told me I wouldn’t be going to class that day, but he was going to talk to Milly. It was the last time I saw him.”
“If I show you a photo, can you recognize that man?”
“Of course!”
Jonathan searched for some photos on his phone. Luckily, he had some from the wedding. In fact, his mother had taken them and sent them to him.
“This one. This is the man who spoke to my grandson and left with him…”
“Mr. Parker, this is Nathan Wolf, Elizabeth’s father.”
