Chapter 118 Family Reckoning
Chapter 118 Family Reckoning
Jonathan picked up the document he needed, but he didn’t go home. He stopped by Nathan’s house. He would question his father-in-law about what happened with Milly.
Nathan opened the door and swallowed hard. He knew that Jonathan’s presence there meant he was in trouble.
“Larson, to what do I owe the honor, my son-in-law?”
“Spare me your flattery! I want to know why you contacted Mr. Parker’s grandson? What did you want with him?”
“Jonathan, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Who is this Parker guy?”
“Are you going to play this game? With me?” Jonathan asked and pushed him, entered the house, and closed the door.
“Why did you bite Elizabeth? What did my daughter do to deserve a punishment like that?” It was possible to notice the satisfaction in Nathan’s voice. For him, his objective had been achieved. Elizabeth was suffering at her husband’s hands.
Jonathan felt like finishing Nathan off right then, but he thought it was better to keep him fooled. That way he wouldn’t try anything against her, thinking Jonathan was punishment enough.
“That’s none of your business! What I do with my wife is not your problem! Now answer! Why did you go after the boy?”
“I only told him that the girl was getting into a dangerous world, that if she didn’t stay away from Dave she would be running a risk. You understand, Jonathan, the organization is dangerous…”
Nathan didn’t lie, but he didn’t say that on the night Gabriel picked up Milly, he only intended to talk to her in the car. Nathan used a device with chloroform gas to knock both of them out. He hired someone experienced who did the job. He took Milly and the boy inside the house and there applied a strong medication. If Dave hadn’t gone there, they would have slept for at least two days. But Nathan already knew about the marriage plan. His son had talked to him so he would accept it and treat the girl well. Dave told his father about the surprise, and when in his act of fury he killed Milly and Gabriel, he called his father. After unloading his gun on the unconscious couple, Nathan called the cleaning team and made sure there were no traces of his son.
“The boy’s body! I know you called the cleaning team. I want you to hand the boy’s body over to his grandfather… He has no part in all this shit.”
“Jonathan, you have no way of proving I had anything to do with this. I owe you nothing.”
Jonathan became furious. He grabbed Nathan by the neck and squeezed a little.
“Look here, you worm! You’re going to do what I told you. That’s the price of my silence. Either you find and hand over his body to the family or I tell Dave and my uncle that you set the girl up. I’m sure this time you’ll get the punishment you deserve.”
Jonathan released him and Nathan ran his hand over his neck, incredulous. His life depended on finding the boy’s body and handing it over to his family.
Jonathan left for home and when he arrived there was a handsome, smiling young man on his sofa.
“The living always show up…” Jonathan said as he entered.
“I should be the one saying that. It’s been years since we last saw each other, my brother.” Noah gave Jonathan a tight hug. He was now 18 years old, had finished his studies in Switzerland, and would start working in the family business.
“How was Switzerland?” Jonathan asked and sat with him on the sofa. Elizabeth served juice, cake, and coffee for them and sat beside Jonathan. He put his arm around her shoulder and Noah noticed the love between them.
“By the looks of it, things have changed between you two… The last time I spoke with Elizabeth was when she called me and… Well, I already had my bags packed. I know what happened after that call.” Noah touched Elizabeth’s hand. It was an offer of support to his sister-in-law. He knew that after calling him, Elizabeth had tried to kill herself. His mother had called him disappointed with Jonathan and told him about Elizabeth’s situation in the hospital.
“That was madness. I’m fine now and knowing that my husband loves me makes me even more confident.” Elizabeth said and looked at Jonathan. He took her wrist and kissed it. It was a silent request for forgiveness for having caused Elizabeth so much pain.
“But Noah, tell me about you… Are you seeing anyone? Are you studying? What have you been doing?” Elizabeth asked.
“Well, I arrived a week ago. I haven’t gone out yet. I came here, went to Uncle James’s house, caused a fight between him and his wife, and that’s it. I didn’t even talk to the people from my old school.”
“Wait, you caused a fight between Uncle and Lays? What the hell did you do?” Jonathan asked.
“Calm down… I didn’t do anything. Uncle offered me the manager position at the club, but she didn’t like it… I didn’t understand why.”
Jonathan laughed. He knew very well the reason. Lays was really excellent as manager, but she still got confused with the financial part. James ended up having to leave Anthony at Jonathan’s house or with Doug to go resolve that part.
While Jonathan spent time laughing with his brother, James was having yet another argument with Lays because of the work at the club.
“Lays, be reasonable. With Noah there you can sleep at home every night with Anthony.”
“James, you met me there. I’m not going to turn into a housewife, a lady by the pool. I like managing the club and I won’t accept you taking that away from me.”
“Fuck, Lays, make it easy for me! I’m not old enough to pick you up every night. You know you don’t even need to work. If I sell the club we’ll still live very well!”
“So that’s it? If I don’t accept, you’re going to sell the club?”
“I didn’t say that…”
“James, I don’t like staying home doing nothing. I’m not useless!”
“Lays, you can’t occupy all your time. Our son needs you too.”
Lays gave a small smile. Every time they fought and James referred to Anthony as his son, she would disarm. The affectionate reference was rewarding for her.
“Darling, I just don’t want to spend my life doing nothing.” Lays said in a soft tone and wrapped her arms around James’s neck.
“I know… But Anthony notices. He thanked me for having a father. He said that now he has someone to spend time with him, since his mother is always busy.”
Lays felt a tightness in her heart. Anthony was the most important thing she had and she was neglecting him.
“I want more time with Anthony, but the girls at the club need protection. They feel safe with me in charge there.”
“How about you and Noah working together? You take care of the girls and he handles the accounting. You go fewer days a week and that way you have more time for our boy.”
Lays smiled at the proposal. The idea was really good.
“I liked it!”
“You liked it? Then I deserve a reward for this idea…” James said and kissed her.
“Wait for me in the bedroom. I’ll give you a really good reward.”
