CHAPTER 112: THE FIRST OFFER.
CHAPTER 112: THE FIRST OFFER.
Serena’s POV
The command center feels colder than it should, even with the low hum of machines running along the walls and the faint glow of screens reflecting across the room. The Prophet’s latest message is still paused on the central monitor, his face frozen in the exact moment he lifted the phone toward the camera. Every man present keeps glancing at the image as if expecting it to move again.
Adrian stands beside me with the kind of stillness that comes from experience rather than fear. His focus is fixed on the screen, yet I sense the fury beneath that controlled exterior, the steady burn that never reveals itself unless the situation demands it. The silence stretches long enough that the back of my neck tightens with anticipation.
Matteo finally breaks the tension by announcing that all auxiliary feeds have been restored. Adrian gives a single nod, and the screens shift from the paused recording to the live surveillance grid. The central gate, the perimeter fences, the north wing, the garages, and the private driveway all come into view.
The Prophet’s silhouette remains on the feed outside the east gate, his posture calm and steady as if he is completely aware that we are watching. His ability to project control has always been one of his greatest weapons, and tonight he uses it with the precision of a man who knows exactly how to manipulate the battlefield.
Luca adjusts the focus on the camera. The Prophet raises his hand, revealing the phone again as he tilts it toward the lens. The display is perfectly visible, showing a digital countdown with fifty-nine minutes and ten seconds remaining. The numbers shift down by a second. Then another.
Adrian’s posture stiffens. Everyone in the room waits for him to speak, but it is clear to me that he is absorbing every detail before he gives any command.
I study the timer carefully. The Prophet is not expecting Adrian to surrender within the next hour. He knows Adrian well enough to understand that no real submission will be offered to him. His purpose is different, and the clarity forms slowly in my mind until the realization settles with a cold weight in my chest.
“This timer is not meant to pressure you,” I say quietly. “It is meant to mark the time for something else.”
Adrian turns toward me with a sharp, focused expression. “What do you see?”
“The Prophet is waiting for an event,” I reply. “The countdown aligns with an action already set in motion, something inside the compound, not outside it.”
Matteo spins toward us from his station, confirming that several alarms have activated in the north service wing. The surveillance feed for that section flickers and then stabilizes long enough for us to see two armed men running through the corridor. Their clothing bears the Prophet’s marking. The breach is deliberate and timed precisely with the countdown.
Adrian gives an instruction for the strike team to intercept. His voice is steady, decisive, and controlled even as the threat intensifies around us.
I move closer to the monitors as the alerts shift. The Prophet’s message suddenly overrides every feed, replacing the live footage with a white screen and a line of text.
THE OFFER WAS NEVER ABOUT HIM.
CHECK THE ROOF.
The tension in the room thickens immediately. Matteo pushes away from the console and runs toward the hallway, already calling for the nearest responders to follow his lead. Adrian grabs my arm with a firm grip, pulling me with him as he moves toward the exit.
We move quickly through the corridors. The compound’s alarms echo overhead while the lights flicker with the strain of the ongoing breach. The urgency sharpens with each step. Adrian keeps me close, placing himself at my side in a way that makes it clear he will react to any threat aimed in my direction.
We reach the stairwell. Adrian pushes the door open, and we climb to the next level. The ascent is fast, driven by instinct and tension rather than exhaustion. Another alarm sounds somewhere below us. The moment we reach the top, Adrian stops to scan the hallway before proceeding.
The door leading to the roof is closed, but the faintest glow of early sunlight leaks through the edges. Adrian pushes the door open, keeping me slightly behind him as we step onto the rooftop.
The open space is quiet, unnervingly so, and the rising sun casts orange light across the concrete. The breeze carries the faint scent of smoke from the earlier attack. In the center of the rooftop, resting on the ground in plain sight, is a small black box. A phone is taped to the top with the screen illuminated.
The message on the display is simple.
THIS ONE IS FOR HER.
Adrian’s entire posture changes. His focus narrows until his concentration becomes almost suffocating. I step forward carefully. The box is small, lightweight, and positioned deliberately in the center of the rooftop, where it cannot be ignored. The phone’s screen continues to glow softly in the sunlight.
Adrian kneels beside the box, examining it without touching the exterior. His voice is calm when he speaks, but the control in his tone reveals just how dangerous he considers the situation.
“It is too deliberate. The placement is intentional, meant to draw your eyes before anything else. The Prophet wants us to see it before the hour ends.”
I crouch beside him, observing the box from another angle. There is no visible wiring on the exterior and no mechanical components. The structure seems deceptively simple, which only increases my suspicion. When the Prophet chooses subtlety, he usually hides something sharper beneath it.
“He did not intend to harm you with this,” I say. “If he wanted to cause physical damage, he would not have placed it so clearly. This is not an explosive device. It is a message.”
Adrian looks at me with a brief, quiet intensity that lingers longer than it should. He trusts my judgment. He also fears the specific implication behind the words on the screen. His fear is not for himself. It is for me. I feel it in the way his gaze holds mine for that extra second before he shifts his attention back to the box.
He lifts the phone gently from the top of the box, careful not to disturb anything beneath it. The moment he presses the screen, a new message appears. It is a video file.
“Serena,” he says softly. “Stand slightly behind me.”
I do as he asks, though every instinct in me pushes forward instead. Adrian plays the video. The screen brightens with the image of a dimly lit room. The camera is angled downward, showing a wooden table covered in photographs. Most of the images are blurred with age or damaged by water, but a few remain clear enough to identify the faces.
I recognize one of them instantly. My mother.
The Prophet’s voice begins to play over the footage, low and steady. He explains nothing directly. He simply reads a sequence of dates and locations, each one associated with operations that existed long before I knew anything about them.
Adrian tightens his grip on the phone as the Prophet’s voice shifts into a deeper, more pointed tone. He states that this information is only the beginning. He claims that the truth about my mother’s disappearance was never buried. It was redirected and repurposed, shaped into something useful for the people who profited from her silence.
The final image in the video is a photograph of my mother standing beside a man I do not recognize. Her expression is tense, and the man’s hand rests on her arm in a way that suggests control rather than protection.
When the screen goes black, I feel a hollow ache open beneath my ribs.
Adrian rises slowly from his crouched position. His expression is unreadable, but the fury beneath it is unmistakable. His concern for me is strong enough to pull him into a level of focus that feels almost suffocating.
“We are not accepting his offer,” I say, my voice steady despite the tremor beneath the surface. “We will not negotiate with him on any terms.”
Adrian studies me for a long moment. I know he is weighing both the emotional risk and the tactical implications. When he finally speaks, his voice is controlled with a sharp edge beneath it.
“We will destroy his leverage before he uses it again.”
The wind shifts across the rooftop, carrying the faint echo of sirens from the compound below. Adrian takes the box in his hands with deliberate caution and hands it to Luca, who has just reached the roof. He gives him instructions to analyze it in the secure lab.
Adrian turns back to me, standing close enough that the warmth of his body cuts through the morning air. His hand rests briefly on my arm, not for control but as an anchor. His touch is steady, protective, and charged with a tension that runs deeper than either of us is prepared to acknowledge.
“We end this,” he says quietly. “We end him.” The countdown timer on the Prophet’s phone continues to tick down toward the final hour as the sun rises fully above the skyline.
