A boy was born!
A boy was born!
Chapter 163
Ruby's POV
“She is bleeding, sir! The blood looks white!” one of the men called out in a panic, his voice trembling with fear and confusion.
“Oh, it seems she’s about to have that child. Come on now, let’s get her to a hospital,” Dominic replied nonchalantly. He turned back around just as another sharp pain stabbed through my belly, making me double over as I cried out loudly.
“Dominic, what do we do with the body?” the policeman from earlier asked again, stepping forward to block his way.
“I told you, he is as good as dead. Dispose of the body thereafter,” Dominic said with a dismissive wave of his hand, barely even glancing in his direction.
He walked past him calmly while I was being supported by two of the men, one on each side, their arms under mine as I struggled to stay on my feet. Every movement sent pain racking through my entire body, and I could barely focus on anything beyond the stabbing pain in my belly.
Everything that happened after that felt like a blur of fragments of different things happening. One moment, we were standing in front of the church and in what felt like the very next second, we were at a hospital I didn’t recognize.
I was being wheeled down a hallway on a gurney with bright lights above me blinding my eyes as nurses rushed by my side, shouting instructions and checking the monitors attached to my body.
“Can you hear me, Miss?” I heard a voice calling to me, cutting through the heavy fog in my mind and dragging me back from the darkness that had started to pull me in.
I moaned in pain as my legs kept shaking uncontrollably as they were parted open. My body was drenched in sweat, and my lips trembled as if I had been pulled from a freezer. It felt like every last bit of strength had been drained from my body, and I couldn’t even find the energy to speak.
“We’re going to perform an emergency C-section! The mother is too weak to push, we don’t have time. Get the consent form, she’s going straight into surgery!” I heard someone yell, their voice echoing in the background.
From that point on, everything became hazy. I was in and out of consciousness. I could barely hold onto my thoughts.
There was a constant pounding pain in my head that felt like a hammer smashing against my head every time I tried to open my eyes.
After what felt like an eternity trapped in that darkness, I slowly became aware of the steady beeping of hospital machines nearby.
I tried to move my body, testing to see if I could feel anything. My fingers twitched slightly and then with more effort my eyes fluttered open.
The room was dimly lit. Everything was quiet except for the soft beeping. “You are finally awake…” I heard a gentle female voice say from the side of my bed.
I slowly turned my head, my neck muscles felt very weak and sore. A female nurse stood beside me, scribbling something onto a chart. She looked familiar but I couldn’t quite place where I had seen her before.
“Where is my baby?” I croaked out, my voice very weak as panic spiked through me as I pushed myself up weakly from the bed, my eyes darting around the room in fear when I couldn’t see my baby anywhere nearby.
“He is safe,” the nurse said kindly. “He has been taken for feeding since you’ve been unconscious the whole time. Don’t worry, I made sure that man hasn’t gone anywhere near him. There’s water to your right, I figured you would be thirsty.”
Her calm words made something inside me settle slightly, and for the first time since I woke, a small, shaky smile formed on my lips. My child. A boy. Relief washed over me.
“How long have I been out?” I rasped, slowly reaching over. The bed creaked beneath me as I moved, and my shaky hands wrapped around the cool glass of water. I brought it to my lips with great effort, pausing for a moment to wet my dry lips before sipping the cool liquid that cooled my parched throat.
As I leaned back slightly, something clicked in my mind. I squinted at the nurse, narrowing my eyes. “Do you happen to know anyone by the name Ash?” I asked suspiciously.
Her face were finally falling into place as I remembered that she was my new neighbor, the one I had seen after I moved back into my house following Ethan sending me away.
“You’ve been out for five days,” she replied gently, smiling as she continued her notes. “And yes, Ash is my elder sister.”
Before she could move away, I reached out and grabbed her hand tightly in desperation as I dumped the glass on the table. “Where is your sister? Where is Ash?” I mumbled, my words rushing out fast. “Ethan… is… I need to speak to Ash…” I blinked quickly, trying to push back the tears that were now threatening to fall.
“You need to calm down. You are not fully healed yet. It’s honestly a miracle that you made it out alive. You had lost so much blood,” she said softly, her voice filled with concern as she moved around the bed. “Look, you’ve hurt yourself again. You don’t feel the pain right now because your nerves are damaged,” she added gently, her eyes scanning my body.
She stood up and walked over to a small cabinet at the side of the room. From it, she pulled out a small medical kit and returned to my side.
With steady hands, she began to work on the injuries caused by the needles that had been pulled from my skin.
“She had gone to Africa for a while to visit her son,” she said suddenly, breaking the silence as she focused on my wounds. “And she had only just come back when she heard the news. She says there’s a slim chance that Ethan is still alive, and she hasn’t given up search. She’s still searching for him, but it has to be low-key now… Someone else owns the city now you know.”
Her voice became quiet, even cautious, as she placed a fresh plaster over my skin, securing the needle line once more. She looked at me for a long moment before standing upright again.
“I’ll be back. Let me get you something to eat,” she said kindly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “And after that, I’ll bring your child to you.” She offered a small, reassuring smile before turning to leave the room. The door slamming shut behind her.
My hands slowly folded in my lap, trembling slightly. I stared into the empty space in front of me my mind blank and heavy. What could I even do now? I felt utterly useless, powerless and the feeling was gut-wrenching.
I hated this feeling and then my mind landed landed sharply on my child. My baby. I had to get stronger, I told myself. I had to. I needed to protect him, especially from that devil.
The door burst open with a loud bang, and my head jerked to the side. My heart dropped. There he was, the devil himself.
Dominic stormed into the room wearing all black, his suit crisp and we'll ironed with dark shades covering his eyes.
“Seems you finally woke up,” he said with a smirk, his voice smooth and cold. “I was getting a bit impatient. I have a party to host, you know.” Dominic chuckled as his guard stepped in behind him and slammed the door shut again with force.
“Don’t you have anything to say to me? Aren’t you mad at me for killing your dear Ethan? Aren’t you going to curse me, or try to kill me?” Dominic laughed loudly, throwing his head back with amusement as he walked to the foot of my bed and leaned slightly over the chart, reading it like he was actually even interested in what was written there.
