Chapter 44
Nina was already waiting for me at the dining table.
When she saw me coming over with Kane, a flash of surprise crossed her eyes, and she instinctively stood up.
Although Nina would also advise me to stay with Kane, she still felt very uncomfortable around him.
And I could tell from her eyes that she was afraid of Kane.
I could see Nina's smile freeze the moment she saw Kane.
I quickly walked to Nina's side and spoke softly to comfort her.
"Don't worry, he's just having a meal with us. Besides, he's not that scary."
Nina glanced at Kane and immediately looked away, muttering somewhat uncomfortably, "That's because it's you. He loves you, so of course he won't treat me the same way."
Kane seemed to have heard Nina's words, too.
He looked at Nina coldly, his tone still somewhat icy.
"Since you're Sonya's friend, I'll definitely treat you well. You don't need to worry."
Nina looked completely flattered.
She stammered for quite a while before managing to say thank you.
Then Nina sat in her seat and ate her meal without saying another word.
This wasn't like her usual self at all.
I helplessly blinked at her.
"Relax a bit, he's really not that scary."
Nina still didn't dare to look up. I was at a loss, too, so I could only shrug at Kane and continue eating.
This was the most silent meal we'd ever had.
After finishing her meal, Nina immediately stood up, bowed to Kane, and then said to me, "You two probably still have things to do, so I'll head back to my room first."
Watching Nina's hurried departure, I cleared my throat softly.
"Nina just isn't good at socializing with people. It's not because she dislikes you."
"I know she doesn't dislike me. I also know she's said plenty of good things about me in front of you."
I looked at Kane in surprise, not expecting him to know about these things.
At the same time, I couldn't help but feel relieved that Nina had never said anything bad about Kane in front of me before.
Otherwise, given Kane's personality, even with my persuasion, I wasn't entirely sure he would let Nina off the hook.
Just as we finished breakfast, Bandel hurriedly walked to Kane's side.
Seeing this, I knew in my heart that today's lunch banquet would probably be canceled.
But unexpectedly, after hearing what Bandel said, Kane turned around and raised an eyebrow at me.
"Get ready now. Come out with me, we'll attend the lunch banquet at noon, then come back to prepare for tomorrow's wedding."
I was a bit shocked, not expecting Kane to take me out right now.
"Okay, I'll go get ready right away." Athena immediately followed behind me.
I didn't know where Kane was taking me, but today Athena gave me a very different hairstyle.
Before, I would either have my hair braided or wear it down, either straightened or curled.
But today she did an updo for me, which looked very elegant and noble.
She also chose a velvet bodycon dress for me. Looking at myself in the mirror with this inexplicably mature charm, I felt rather shy.
Turning around, I looked at Athena and asked somewhat uncertainly, "Do I really look good like this?"
Athena looked at me with a smile, her eyes very sincere.
"Miss Sonya, you're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, and this outfit is perfect for you. Ms. Merlin just sent it over."
When Athena said this, her tone was full of sincerity.
I could tell she wasn't someone who would lie casually or deliberately say nice things to please anyone.
Athena's attitude made me relax a bit.
"Thank you for dressing me up. You worked hard."
After sincerely thanking her, I walked out of the room.
Although Athena said it looked beautiful, and I thought it looked good too, I still felt a bit embarrassed.
I nervously walked up to Kane and blinked at him.
Kane's eyes were full of amazement.
He looked me up and down, and finally said softly, "You're dressed much more special than before today. This suits you very well. Merlin designed it for you, right?"
It seemed Kane was quite familiar with Merlin's design style.
"Alright, let's go now."
I got into Kane's car.
This car was much more luxurious and grand than the one I'd ridden in before.
I could even lie down halfway on the back seat.
Seeing my curious look, Kane chuckled.
He reached out and actually took out a bottle of soda from a small box beside him, opened it, and handed it to me.
"You seem to really like this car, so I'll give it to you."
My eyes widened, thinking I'd heard wrong.
Kane was actually going to give me this car.
I immediately shook my head. "I can't drive. There's no use giving me this car."
But Kane just shrugged nonchalantly. "I've arranged a driver for you, haven't I? And it seems you find this car much more comfortable. I have many cars, this is just one of them."
Kane's words dispelled that strange sense of shame I had about accepting gifts.
Words that Kane and Nina had both said to me before came to mind.
Because they thought I deserved all this, I was worthy of having it all.
I nodded. "In that case, thank you."
Kane was obviously very happy that I accepted so readily. He tapped my nose.
"Your accepting my gift is the best thanks you could give me."
While Kane and I were chatting, the car had already arrived at the foot of a very tall building.
I looked up in surprise, my eyes full of confusion.
"Isn't that Wayne Group?"
Kane raised an eyebrow, smiling without saying anything.
Bandel, who had gotten out of the car with us, opened the door for me and respectfully replied, "Wayne Group actually also belongs to the Moretti family."
This was the first time I'd heard of this.
I followed behind Kane as we walked into Wayne Group.
I'd always heard people say Wayne Group was the richest company here.
I never expected it also belong to Kane.
As soon as I entered, I felt the splendor of Wayne Group.
The lobby was almost as tall as three normal floors, and the decorations were almost all golden.
There was also a huge crystal chandelier that I couldn't take my eyes off.
The receptionist at the front desk looked very beautiful and was full of grace.
She wore elegant, neat clothes, and the moment she saw Kane and us come in, she showed a perfect smile.
She walked up to us.
"Mr. Moretti, our boss has been waiting for you for a long time."
Her gaze swept across my face briefly, and I sensed a hint of contempt.
I scratched my head in confusion. This seemed to be our first meeting, right?
I shouldn't have offended her before!
