Chapter 29
While I was eating, I took out my phone and sent Kane a message, expressing my hope that Nina could attend our wedding.
But after waiting for a long time, he didn't reply, and I felt a bit uneasy.
Was Kane angry?
That would make sense.
For mafia people like them, such a noble family probably wouldn't want someone with Nina's background to show up.
If I weren't his fiancée, I probably would never be able to stand by his side in this lifetime either.
Just as I was feeling down, Nina's voice took on a tone of delight.
She pointed at the phone in my hand, with envy in her expression.
"That's the latest model phone. I saw it in a store before - it would cost me five months' salary."
Although Nina's tone was envious, I could tell she was happy for me.
I thought of the supplementary card Kane gave me, and my eyes lit up. I turned to look at Athena.
"I'd like to go shopping with Nina this afternoon to buy some things. Is that okay?"
Kane had said I could go out, though he did say I needed to behave a bit better.
Athena's eyes flickered, and she bowed slightly to me.
"I need to check with Mr. Moretti first. Please wait a moment."
After saying that, Athena walked aside with her phone. Soon my phone rang.
"She's your friend. If you want her at the wedding, of course, that's fine. And yes, you can take her shopping, but I hope you'll both be back home before dinner. I'll have Athena go with you."
Seeing Kane's message, I couldn't help but cheer.
Nina looked at me, confused.
I happily held my phone up in front of her. "Mr. Moretti agreed to let us go shopping! Oh, and I haven't told you yet. He gave me his supplementary card. We can eat all those things we wanted to try before."
After hearing what I said, Nina's expression changed from confusion to delight.
We hugged each other, unable to contain our happiness.
Merlin watched us with a smile and said softly, "Be safe."
With something to look forward to in the afternoon, Nina and I ate much faster.
Soon both our bowls were empty.
I took the napkin Athena brought over, wiped my mouth, and stood up eagerly.
"Let's go, Nina."
Athena was a very responsible maid.
She arranged a special car for us, and after we got in, she sat in the passenger seat.
The car headed to an upscale mall that I used to not even dare to look at.
After Nina and I got out of the car, our excitement had faded, leaving only mild embarrassment.
After all, the clothes we were wearing were really not presentable - my skirt even had a patch on it.
I looked at Athena somewhat awkwardly.
But Athena smiled and said calmly, "There are quite a few stores here that belong to Mr. Moretti."
Hearing that there were many of Kane's stores here, I immediately felt relieved.
At least this way, we didn't have to worry too much about being laughed at.
I had Athena take Nina and me to a clothing store under Kane's name first, where we picked out two suitable outfits.
The clothes in this store weren't too expensive compared to other stores, but for the old me, they were still out of reach.
I stroked the corner of the soft cotton clothes I was wearing, feeling a gentle happiness in my heart.
Nina also loved her new clothes.
Just as we were both gently touching our new clothes, a familiar yet somewhat harsh voice suddenly rang out nearby.
"Isn't that those two poor girls? They actually have the nerve to come buy things at the mall. Shouldn't you be going to a secondhand flea market instead?"
Nina and I turned around together.
It was actually Fiona.
Fiona was the daughter of a fruit store owner who often came to our church to pray. Her family's fruit store was quite large.
We shouldn't really have had any connection, but for some reason she always targeted me.
There was even one time when she accused me of stealing her necklace. If I hadn't been at the neighboring church praying at that time and had an alibi, I would have had a hard time clearing my name.
Seeing her at the mall now made me inexplicably nervous.
But then I thought about my current status.
I felt more confident and straightened my chest to look at her.
"If you can come here, why can't I?"
Fiona was clearly angered by my words.
She glared at me viciously, with malice in her eyes.
"Of course, a poor person like you doesn't belong here. Don't you know that just one piece of clothing here would cost you a month's work without eating or drinking?"
Her voice wasn't quiet at all and attracted the attention of people nearby.
Those people heard what she said too, and their looks became somewhat sharp and disdainful.
I blushed with shame, trembling uncontrollably, but Nina pushed me behind her.
"Who do you think you are? You just run a fruit store. Do you know who Sonya's fiancé is?"
I quickly tugged at Nina's clothes. I didn't really want my relationship with Kane to be known to outsiders.
After all, we hadn't actually gotten married yet, and Kane had quite a few female companions around him.
I blinked and looked at the frowning Fiona, keeping my tone as gentle as possible.
"I can come here because I have money in my bag now. I don't think I've ever offended you, so I hope you'll stop saying things that make people misunderstand."
After saying that, I pulled Nina to leave.
Little did I know that in her eyes, this action meant I was afraid of her.
Fiona directly blocked my path and raised her hand to stop me from leaving.
She lifted her chin and looked down at me, her eyes full of contempt.
"How could that gambling stepfather of yours give you money? You didn't steal it from somewhere, did you?"
If it had been anything else, maybe I would have kept quiet.
But she actually said I stole something!
You have to understand, I had sworn before the Lord that I would be a loyal, honest, and kind nun for the rest of my life.
I turned around, with a bit of warning in my eyes.
"If you keep talking nonsense, I don't mind teaching you a lesson."
To be honest, when I said this, I was a bit hesitant.
After all, only Athena was with me now, and I wasn't sure if she would help me.
My words were like a feather tickling Fiona's feet.
She held her stomach and laughed out loud, and the two sidekicks beside her also laughed at me.
"Oh my god, Sonya, have you read so many novels that you've gone stupid? Are you fantasizing about some domineering CEO falling in love with you?"
"I'd like to see how you're going to teach me a lesson."
Fiona arrogantly took a step forward, as if certain I was just bluffing.
I instinctively took a step back.
Just as Fiona was about to mock me again, I saw Athena step in front of me.
"Miss, I hope you can apologize to my future mistress."
