***Greg POV***
Everything had happened so quickly.
I am still reeling from finding Sara in agony, pale as fuck and sobbing that the baby is coming. I'm so confused, the baby is not due for another two weeks.
Unlike human births, the birth of a werewolf is accurate. She-wolves never birth early unless there is something wrong.
So Sara being in labour now means that something is very wrong.
I've never felt so scared before, I have fought in many battles. I was never scared, as I implicitly trusted my wolf. But Seb couldn't help me now. Not in the state he is in. He is so worried for our mate that he has tried to push forward a few times.
I can't let that happen. Not here. He would only complicate things, and possibly endanger Sara even more. Seb was not known to have any patience. He would be like a wolf in a china shop.
That vision made me chuckle. The eyes of the nurse bore into my back as I turned around, so she couldn't see me smiling like a loon.
The door opened, and Dr. Julia walked in with the Grand Luna right behind her.
Gen looked exhausted. But she still had a smile on her beautiful face.
She walked over to me and threw her arms around me. You could see excitement shining from her eyes. But the excitement soon died down when she realised I did not show excitement myself.
''Sara is gong to be fine, Greg. She is a strong she-wolf. Try not to worry, hmm?'
I tried to force a smile, but my lips just wouldnt play ball, I grabbed Gen's hand in mine. She looked at me, a little startled at my action.
''Please say she will be okay Gen. I can't lose her. I just can't.'' I know my words came out as a plea, but I couldn't help it. I was terrified. And I could do nothing but look on whilst my Sara lay there in danger.
I have never felt more useless in my life. I suddenly had a glimpse into Gen's world, as she waited for Jonas to regain consciousness. How she has carried on running the pack has impressed me. But knowing that Gen would feel as useless as myself gave me a greater understanding of her.
I couldn't respect anyone more at this moment.
***Genevieve POV***
Hearing what the Dr. had said about Sara had worried me, but seeing the shell shocked glaze in Greg's eyes made my worry into anxiety. I was suddenly torn between staying or going to sit with Jonas for a few hours. I had never stopped visiting Jonas. Running the pack with the help of my father and Peter was exhausting.
But I never complained, this was my pack, my Mate's pack. I was damn well sure going to keep it running whilst my Mate recovered from the treachery of his father.
When Greg grabbed my hand, I was slightly alarmed at the strength he used. I looked up into his face, as I had done when congratulating him, not a moment ago. This time, however, the fear speaking to me shone from his eyes. Hearing his plea made my heart twist.
This strong Beta was terrified he was losing his Mate. The fear caught me, as well as placed both my hands around his and said a little prayer to the moon Goddess.
Greg joined in the blessing and kissed my hands when we were finished. I realised that as much as I wanted to see Jonas, I was needed here. With Greg and Sara.
"I would like to stay with you both, would that be okay, Greg? I don't want to be in the way."
Greg's shoulders dropped a title at my words. He looked at me with a hint of a smile on his face and said 'I would love that, as I know Sara would. Thank you, Grand Luna'', and he gave a small bow.
''GREG'' I said sharply, ''I am not here in any other capacity other than Sara's best friend, and as such I would prefer if you called me Gen or Genni. But NOT Grand Luna''.
Greg looked stunned at my outburst, then an embarrassed smile appeared on his worried face.
''I'm sorry, I forgot you'd asked us to stop with the titles when we are on our own. It's just there will be people in and out all the time, so I thought the title was in play.''
"Gregory Watson, I don't give a fuck about title at the moment. All I know is that two of my closest and dearest friends are in trouble. I will be Sara's best friend for now, if that's okay with you?'
I know I was snapping at him, the truth was I was scared myself. I hated feeling this useless, powerless to help. It made me feel a mockery when I could wield such power any other time.
I closed my eyes for a second and tried to hide the fear in them as I turned back to offer my apologies for losing my temper. I didn't need to, however, when I started to say the words, Greg stopped me and simply said 'I get it'.
We both sat down next to the bed and watched the steady rise and fall of Sara's chest. It was somehow reassuring to both. I do this when I'm with Jonas. It relaxes me for some reason. Greg still hed my hand as we sat in silence. The machine next to Sara was beeping in a slow and steady rhythm, telling us what her heart rate was, her blood pressure and pulse.
Greg fell asleep after an hour. He had spent the time before talking to Sara, and he had urged me to do the same. I didn't feel awkward at the suggestion, in fact Dr. Julia had told me not long after Jonas was admitted to the infirmary that talking to an unconscious person can and does help. So I had been doing it ever since.
I was getting stiff just sitting here, so I gently removed my hand for Greg's large callous one. Standing up, I was able to stretch out a few locked muscles. I walked over to the window, looking out at the packlands that surrounded the cluster of buildings. The pack house and infirmary were one building. There was another that housed the indoor training facility, another housed the garage.
The other houses dotted around the pack house belong to the higher ranks of the pack. Few of them now stood empty as their tenants fled when Phil had evaded capture. Jonas will be devastated when he wakes up, to learn that four elders of the pack were involved in the failed coo. I knew Jonas had a lot of respect for these men. I can only imagine what he will do when he catches up with them.
I was not sure of the right move to take when all five men disappeared into the night. I know they needed to be found. So I did the only thing I could. I sent out teams of wolves in search of them. Each team had a tracker and two high level warriors. I had sent three for this pack. Not wanting to risk any more lives of my pack, Hilda had suggested the last time I spoke to her, to enlist Alpha Silas and his pack.
After much thought, I decided to ask and was surprised, but a bit pleased when the response was yes. So four teams were looking for the traitors. Hopefully, they would return soon, with their bounty.
As I stood by the window, deep in thought, I recognized the beeping had changed, it was starting to speed up. Greg must have sensed it too, as he whipped his head up and focused on Sara.
Not even a second later, Dr. Julia rushed through the door and started to attend to Sara. I watched as she pushed an injection full of liquid directly into the bag of saline that hung besides her. Over the next minute or so, the beeping returned to the familiar rhythm.
''What's happening Doc, what did you give her?'' Rasped Greg. Handing us both a bottle of water, Greg down the whole thing.
Dr. Julia waited until he had finished, before she explained what she had done.
