Chapter 26 Chapter 26
Chapter 26
\- Marcus -
I relaxed back on my chair as I casually sipped my drink, discussing with my beta James.
"You have done a very good job James," I told him. "I knew I could trust you to."
"Thank you so much, Alpha," he bowed lightly.
"I don't think there is anyone in this pack I can trust as much,"
I said to him. "You have been busy all these years, fought for me. You are so loyal. After my wife, you're the next person I can trust with my life."
Jason choked on his drink when I said that and I squinted my eyes at him
"I am so sorry, Alpha," he said, coughing. "The drink went the wrong way."
"You are lying," I said with the wave of a hand and laughed. "You did that because I mentioned my wife right? You want me to put you above her? Come on mate."
"Of course not, alpha. Your wife should come first. I don't mind it at all."
"That is good James. See why I like you? You are a man of understanding. Even though you're strong and have fought beside me, protecting my throne and my pack, my wife completes me. And I would have been a very miserable man with the curse and all that but she took it away. She's going to give me an heir and make me a complete man. She's redeemed me you know. What's worse than being an Alpha, a very important man and dying without proof of your manliness? Tis very terrible. Don't you agree?"
"Very much, alpha," he replied quietly.
"By the way, I heard your mate is back to the pack," I changed the topic and noticed his face suddenly relax. Or maybe it's because I mentioned his girl. A man will always be a man no matter how tough he is.
"Yes alpha, she's back," he replied, his voice stronger. "Her old ma had passed away. There is no need to stay there anymore. You know she was there taking care of her."
"Sorrows," I said. "You should bring her in for dinner one of these days so I can see her. It's been a while. I am sure you really missed her."
"I did," he agreed
"I want what is best for you. You've been a good and loyal servant to the throne. And that is why I cannot wait for you to get married to her and settle down so you can begin to have babies like me," I smiled at him, but his face was grim
"I heard Jason finally decided to come out of his monkestry and marked a girl no one knew anything about," I said with a smile to the corner of my lips.
"It did not settle with many people. I doubt the rumours are true though. Why will the Alpha settle for someone no one in his pack knows about?" James asked
"Rumour? Nah, didn't you hear he had invited some of his allies to the celebration as he presented her as his luna."
"Little wonder, he didn't want us to find out."
"He wouldn't be able to hide her for so long," I sip the wine
When Jason's first wife died, I learnt he had been devastated and I felt no pity for him
Even though we were not friends and it was something he deserved
He was so power drunk, busy with politics and forgot to protect his own family
The wife of one of the so-called greatest Alpha of a pack was killed by rogues
Rogues! And where was he? Out there busy trying to prove what he was not
He had it coming
I am sure his elders must have persuaded him to find a partner, and he had chosen a girl from the goddess knows where
I pity whoever she is, getting married to a man who only took her to fill a place. If care is not taken, he might also abandon her as he did his wife whom people claimed me loved above all things
He did not love his wife above the position he wanted
And if that was how he treated a woman he claimed he loved, how much more the one he doesn't
I would like to know who the new wife is
Not because I cared, but because something tells me she is not of any background to be proud of
Knowing the pride of Jason, he would have flaunted her if she were from a very powerful royal family
Didn't he flaunt his first wife to our faces?
God, he had deserved everything that happened to him
He knew about my curse and had rubbed it on my face whenever he had the opportunity to
Then the glorious moment came, when his wife died carrying his child
The few weeks and months around them were the most satisfying for me. He lost his vigour for a while and could not speak during the annual meetings
Of course, I used that to my advantage. I made sure I rubbed salt and pepper on his injury and the great council had to come between us because he was threatening thunder and brimstone
Now, the next time I see him, I want him to know my curse has been broken and my very beautiful wife is carrying my child
The same woman that his brother was dying for, literally, was comfortably in my arms, carrying my child
While he? Is with a woman I am definite he does not want, covering up for his loss. At least, it was good that he was able to move on after five solid years.
I laughed heartily.
This was the moment I had waited for all my life. To watch Jason fall. When his brother died, when his wife and child died, leaving him an unhappy man for life.
He might have a large pack and army, but he lacked that one thing that made him a complete man. A true family.
It was what I just told James.
