Chapter 26
Meeting Zanders parents went a lot better than Sophie had expected it to be. When they first arrived the driver opened the door to let them out of the limo, then one of the servants met all of them and brought them into the house. Who would have known that Sophie was marrying into a rich family? This house made theirs look tiny. Although Zanders parents were rich, they were common people; they were not one’s to look down on people who were from the poor side of town. They were easy to talk to, easy to relate to and the kids loved them. Of course what kid would not like someone when they just meet them and the people give them each a fifty dollar bill? The biggest shock was the new car that was given to Sophie and Zander as an early wedding gift.
“Sophie, Zander is staying here tonight. Go ahead and have the driver drive you home. We will see you in the morning.” Zander’s mom then turned to the driver and motioned for him to get them to the car. She was happy to be rid of them. What a scummy choice her son had made, but of course she had to be silent or she would as well ruin his plan.
Zander was ready for a night without Sophie, he had plans to go out get drunk, and maybe meet some other woman. He was so tempted to but had come too far to ruin his plan now. “Honey, tomorrow is the big day, I am going to stay and visit with my parents and turn in early. I happen to be superstious; I tend to believe what they say if you see the bride on the day of the wedding the marriage does not last. We want this to last don’t we? I will meet you at the courthouse in the morning, with hopes it does not rain, that is another omen of doom for a marriage.” Who the fuck cares about any of that I have to say something; if it breaks once I get my kids who the hell care.
“I cannot believe we are getting married tomorrow. It seems like just yesterday that we met at Jewel and Josh’s house. I will see you tomorrow I guess, I love you.”
“I love you too. Make sure you make it to the courthouse on time, or I may think that you changed your mind, or that something happened.”
“Do not worry, I will be there on time, nothing will happen.”
Sophie had a restless night, she could not sleep no matter how hard she tried, she thought about the wedding, then thought about Alex and all the threats he had made about ruining her wedding day, she wondered if he would keep the promise. Then she wandered to the thought if the kids liked Jake or if they were just pacifying her and wanted her to marry him to be happy. She hoped she was doing the right thing. Sophie finally began to doze off then she woke back up, once again thinking is I doing the right thing, will I regret marrying Zander, he is everything I want in a man and more, he is good to my kids. Wait what if he regrets getting married to me, then what will I do? Are we really compatible, how do we keep the marriage alive through the mail and on the phone? Will that be enough?
“Mom are you okay? I thought I heard voices in here. You look like you are in another world.”
“I’m sorry did you say something?”
Kay-Leah laughed at her then she replied, “I heard voices in here I was asking if you are okay.”
“I am fine; I just had a scared moment. I was thinking out loud. I just hope that I am doing the right thing, what do you think?”
“Honestly, I like Zander; he would be my type of guy if he were younger. You two make a good couple, he loves you, he could not treat you or us little ones as he says any better. You two were made for each other. Do you love him? Or do you just think you love him, or are you feeling a little bit guilty about dad again?” I have to say that you are made for each other you both deserve to be hurt.
“Of course I love Zander, what kind of question is that? As far as me feeling guilty about your dad, at first I did, after what he did to me, hitting me, and shoving me, I did not feel guilty anymore. I just need to make sure that the three of your kids are happy and secure with my choice. Thank you for caring and talking to me Kay-Leah, you hare growing up faster than I thought. We can talk more tomorrow; right now we both need to get some sleep. Well, at least try to.”
“Especially you, I have to think you need your beauty rest,” Kay-Leah snickered,”Good night mom, I love you.”
Tears began to sting Sophie’s eyes. The words “I Love you” rarely ever came out of Kay-Leah’s mouth, Sophie felt a sense of relief that Kay-Leah had come to terms with Zander and she getting married, Kay-Leah actually approved of what she was doing. With that in mind Sophie finally drifted off to sleep.
