Chapter 61 The Quiet After the Storm

Chapter 61 The Quiet After the Storm
The forest was quiet again.

Not the eerie, haunted silence of the cursed ruins—
but the warm, gentle hush that came after rain and danger had passed.

A full day had gone by since the battle.
The tribe had returned to their settlement nestled between the mountains and the river—
a place of stone dwellings, wooden halls, and open courtyards where the wolves trained and lived as a family.

And in the heart of the settlement, Kael sat beside Lina.

He hadn’t left her side for even a minute.

Lina lay on a bed of soft furs inside Kael’s lodge, wrapped in warm blankets, her breathing slow but steady.
Her cheeks had regained color, her lips soft and natural again.
The silver glow beneath her skin had dimmed, settling deep, dormant for now.

Kael watched her with a kind of reverent stillness—
as if she were something precious he’d been given and didn’t dare touch too quickly.

Cassian peeked into the lodge.

“Is she still asleep?”

Kael didn’t look away from her.
“Yes.”

Cassian nodded.
“And you’re still sitting there like a stone statue, huh?”

Kael finally glanced at him.

“I’m making sure she’s safe.”

Cassian smirked.
“She’s safe. She has you hovering over her like a worried mother bear.”

Kael’s eyes softened.

“She nearly died.”

Cassian sighed.
“I know, Kael. But she didn’t. She fought like hell and survived. You both did.”

Kael didn’t respond.

Cassian leaned against the doorway.

“You know…” he murmured, “I think she’s stronger than all of us put together.”

Kael’s jaw tightened with a mixture of pride and fear.

“That’s what scares me.”

Cassian stepped into the room, kneeling beside his brother.

“Kael… you love her.”

Kael looked at him sharply, golden eyes brightening.

Cassian held up a hand.
“I’m not mocking you. I’m saying it because it’s true.”

Kael exhaled shakily.

“I do.”

Cassian smiled faintly.
“And she loves you. Anyone with eyes can see that.”

Kael’s gaze drifted back to Lina.

Her hand twitched… just slightly…
as if she were reaching for something even in sleep.

Kael took it immediately, intertwining his fingers with hers.

Cassian pushed himself up.

“Get some rest, Kael. You’re no use to her half-dead.”

Kael’s voice was quiet but firm.

“I’ll rest when she wakes.”

Cassian sighed.

“Stubborn idiot.”

“I learned from you.”

Cassian smirked.
“Point taken.”

He left the lodge quietly.

And Kael stayed.

LINA WAKES

Hours passed.
Soft moonlight spilled through the open windows.
The fire crackled in the hearth, throwing warm light across the room.

Kael still hadn’t moved.

Then—
a whisper.

“…Kael…”

He jerked forward instantly.

“Lina?”

Her eyelashes fluttered.
Her fingers tightened around his.

“Kael…” she breathed again.

He cupped her cheek with trembling hands.

“I’m here. I’m right here.”

She opened her eyes slowly—
silver flecks swirling within the depths of her irises.

She smiled softly.
“You didn’t rest.”

Relief washed over Kael so hard he nearly collapsed.

“How could I?” he whispered. “You scared the life out of me.”

She reached up to touch his face.

“I knew you were here.”

His breath caught.

“Always,” he murmured.

Lina pushed herself up slowly.
Kael guided her, supporting her back until she could sit comfortably.

“How do you feel?” he asked.

“Like I slept for a year,” she whispered. “And also like I need to sleep for ten more.”

He chuckled softly—
the sound filled with love and exhaustion.

Her hand slid into his.

“Did I hurt anyone? With… the Heart?”

Kael shook his head.

“No. You saved us. All of us.”

Lina swallowed hard.

“And you? You’re still injured.”

He brushed her hair back gently.

“I’m fine.”

“Kael.”

He sighed.

“I will heal. My wolf is strong.”

She leaned forward, pressing her forehead to his.

“Kael…”

He closed his eyes, savoring the warmth of her breath.

“You protected me,” she whispered.
“Even when it meant breaking yourself.”

“I would break a thousand times for you,” he murmured.

Lina shook her head, cupping his face.

“No. I want you whole. I need you whole.”

Emotion caught in Kael’s throat.

She rested her head on his chest, listening to the strong, steady beat of his heart.

“Kael…”

“Yes, little flame?”

She hesitated.

“You meant what you said… about me being your mate?”

Kael froze.

Then he lifted her chin gently.

“I meant every word.”

Her breath shivered.

“And you’re sure?”

Kael leaned in, brushing his lips against her forehead.

“You are my bond.
My soul.
My mate.
There is no one else.”

Her cheeks warmed, her body relaxing into him.

“And I’m yours?” she whispered.

He kissed her gently—
slow, warm, claiming, tender—
the kind of kiss that sealed promises without words.

When he pulled away, his voice was barely a breath.

“You’ve been mine since the night you chose to follow me into the forest.”

Lina smiled softly, her heart full.

“And now?”

Kael kissed her again—
deeper, but still careful, as if she were precious and fragile and powerful all at once.

“Now,” he whispered, “you’re the heartbeat of my entire world.”

THE FUTURE CALLS

Lina rested her head against his shoulder, their fingers intertwined.

“Kael,” she murmured, “what about… my uncle? And the shadows? And everything he said?”

Kael’s eyes darkened.

“We’ll deal with it.”

“How?”

Kael leaned back against the wall, pulling her gently onto his lap.

“Together,” he whispered.
“With Cassian. Aric. Yara. Riven. The tribe. We’re not alone.”

Lina exhaled, comforted.

“And if more shadows come?”

Kael smirked.

“Then they’ll regret coming.”

She laughed softly.

“You’re very confident.”

“No,” he said, brushing her cheek.
“I’m very in love.”

Her heart fluttered.

“And I’m scared,” she confessed.

“I know,” he murmured, kissing the top of her head.
“But you’re not facing this as a lost Valerius anymore.”

He tilted her chin up.

“You’re facing it as the Flame.”

Her breath caught.

“And I’m facing it as your Alpha.”

She smiled.

“Then I think we’ll be okay.”

Kael held her close, his nose buried in her hair.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Cassian peeked inside.

“Hey! Are you two alive? Because I made soup and—oh gods, you’re cuddling. I’m leaving.”

He closed the door instantly.

Kael sighed.

Lina giggled.

And the fire crackled warmly beside them as the night wrapped them in gentle peace.

For the first time since the shadows rose—
the world felt safe.

Kael kissed her forehead one more time.

“Sleep,” he whispered. “I’ll be right here.”

Lina curled against him.

“I know.”

And as she drifted into dreams, wrapped in the warmth of her Alpha’s arms—

the Valerius Flame glowed softly beneath her skin.

Waiting for the next chapter of destiny.
