Chapter 60 The Flame, the Alpha, and the Road Ahead

Chapter 60 The Flame, the Alpha, and the Road Ahead
The clearing felt different now.
The battle was over, but the weight of what had just unfolded pressed on everyone like a gathering storm.
Wind swept through the trees, carrying the smell of pine and dawn, as if nature itself was trying to calm the racing hearts around Kael and Lina.

Kael hadn’t let go of her.
Not once.

His arm stayed wrapped around her waist, keeping her close, grounding her, silently promising she wasn’t facing any of this alone.
Lina leaned into him, exhaustion written across every line of her face, but her eyes held clarity—determination she didn’t know she had until today.

Eryon, her uncle—the stranger with her mother’s eyes—stood quietly near the treeline, watching them with a mixture of pride and sorrow.

Cassian sat propped against a fallen log, pale but conscious, with Aric beside him, checking his pulse every few minutes despite Cassian’s constant muttering.

“Stop poking me,” Cassian grumbled.
“My soul has suffered enough abuse today.”

Aric sighed dramatically. “If your soul could speak, it would ask for new management.”

Riven and Yara sat a little distance away, whispering loudly, both still caught between awe and shock at everything that had happened.

But Kael didn’t hear them.

His focus was entirely on the girl in his arms.

“Lina,” he murmured, brushing his thumb along her jaw, “you should rest.”

She shook her head softly.
“I’m okay.”

“You just woke up from nearly burning through your entire soul,” he reminded her. “You’re far from okay.”

She didn’t argue that.
But she lifted her eyes toward Eryon.

“We need answers.”

Kael stiffened protectively.
His wolf didn’t trust the man—Lina felt the tension in him like a second heartbeat.

Eryon stepped closer, slow enough to be nonthreatening.

“I know this is overwhelming,” he said softly. “But you deserve the truth.”

Lina’s voice was barely a whisper.
“About me?”

Eryon nodded.

“And the Heart.
And what’s coming.”

Kael pulled Lina closer.

“You can talk. But you don’t take one step near her.”

Eryon inclined his head. “I don’t plan to.”

THE TRUTH OF THE HEART

Eryon knelt in front of them, his silver eyes meeting Lina’s.

“The Valerius Heart isn’t just a power,” he began.
“It’s a legacy. A calling.”

Lina swallowed hard.
“I didn’t ask for this.”

“No one ever does,” Eryon said with a sad smile.
“But you are the only one left who can wield it.”

Kael’s voice was low.
“What does it do?”

Eryon looked at him carefully.
“It can destroy shadow.
Purify magic.
Heal what has been corrupted.”
He paused.
“And create bonds stronger than lifetimes.”

Lina’s breath caught.

Kael’s hand tightened around hers, his heartbeat echoing against her shoulder.

Eryon continued:

“When Lina awakened the Heart, she didn’t just kill the creature. She freed every soul that monster trapped.”
He glanced upward, where the souls had vanished.
“That is the birthright of the Valerius Queen.”

Lina shook her head, overwhelmed.

“I’m not a queen.”

Eryon’s eyes softened.

“You weren’t trained to be.
You weren’t raised to be.
But you are one.”

Kael’s voice turned sharp.

“Don’t put more weight on her shoulders.”

Eryon looked at him for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“You’re right.”

Lina blinked.

Kael tensed.

Eryon lifted both hands in a gesture of peace.

“I won’t force anything on her. I came to guide, not command.”
He turned back to Lina.
“You choose the path. No one else.”

Lina breathed in shakily.

“And if I choose not to become this… queen?”

Eryon lowered his gaze.

“Then the shadows will hunt you until they kill you.
Because the Heart awakened, and they felt it.”

The clearing fell silent.

Kael’s jaw clenched.

“They’ll have to get through me first.”

Eryon met his gaze.

“They will come for your tribe as well. You need to prepare.”

Cassian muttered, “Great. More trouble. Can’t wait.”

THE ALPHA’S PROMISE

Kael turned Lina gently to face him.

“You hear me?” he whispered. “You won’t do any of this alone.”

Lina’s eyes softened.

“I know.”

Kael cupped her cheek, thumb brushing softly across her skin.

“I nearly lost you today,” his voice cracked, “and I swear to every god watching, I will never let that happen again.”

Lina leaned into his touch.

“You saved me too.”

Kael shook his head.

“You saved everyone.”

She opened her mouth to argue—but Kael pulled her closer.

“You are my flame,” he whispered, forehead resting against hers.
“And whatever path you choose—queen, warrior, healer—I walk it with you.”

Her breath trembled.

“Kael…”

His voice dropped lower, a vow carved in the marrow of his bones.

“You’re my mate. My equal. My future.”

Tears stung her eyes.

She pressed her forehead to his.

“And you’re mine.”

Behind them, Aric sniffled loudly.
Cassian kicked him weakly.
Riven whispered, “If they kiss again, I’m going blind.”

Yara smacked him. “Shut up and let them have their moment.”

ERYON’S FINAL SECRET

The rising sun broke through the clouds, golden light spilling across the clearing.

Eryon stood, his expression thoughtful.

“There’s one more thing.”

Kael’s growl returned instantly.

“What now.”

Eryon turned to Lina.

“When your mother was pregnant…”
His voice softened.
“She knew you would carry the Heart.”

Lina froze.

Kael’s breath stilled.

Aric whispered, “Impossible—how could she know—?”

“Because she saw it,” Eryon said quietly.
“She had the Sight. A rare gift in our bloodline.”
His gaze softened.
“And she left something behind for you.”

Lina’s heart pounded.

“What?”

Eryon reached into his cloak and pulled out a small object wrapped in fabric—old, worn, tied with golden thread.

He held it out to Lina.

Kael’s hand instinctively moved to block—but Lina touched his wrist gently.

“It’s okay.”

Kael’s jaw twitched, but he let her take it.

Lina unwrapped the object.

A small pendant lay inside.

A silver flame-shaped locket.

Her breath caught.

“I… I’ve seen this before.”
Her fingers traced the delicate grooves.
“I dreamed about it.”

Eryon nodded slowly.

“It belonged to your mother. She said her daughter would need it one day.”
His eyes met hers.
“And she was right.”

“What does it do?” Lina whispered.

Eryon’s voice turned grave.

“It will guide you.
Protect you.
And when the time comes…
it will open the door you were born to walk through.”

Kael wrapped his arm around Lina as cold chills prickled down her spine.

“What door?” Kael asked sharply.

Eryon held his gaze, eyes full of warning.

“The door that begins the true war.”

Silence fell again.

Lina closed the pendant gently, clutching it to her chest.

Kael held her close, whispering into her hair:

“Whatever comes… we face it together.”

She nodded quietly.

Eryon stepped backward, fading into the shade of the trees.

“I will return when you need me,” he said softly.
“But for now… rest. Heal. Prepare.”

He dipped his head to Lina.

“To the Valerius Flame.”

Then to Kael.

“And to the Alpha she chose.”

And he disappeared into the forest.

THE PATH AHEAD

Lina leaned into Kael, exhausted.

Kael scooped her into his arms again.

“Kael—” she protested weakly.

“You’re tired,” he murmured. “Let me carry you.”

She sighed, nestling into his chest.

“Bossy wolf.”

He kissed her forehead.

“Your wolf.”

She smiled softly.

Cassian rolled his eyes.
“Great. They’re adorable. Can we go home now before I die dramatically?”

Aric huffed. “You’re not dying.”

Riven grinned. “Can I dramatize it for him?”

Yara slapped him again. “No.”

Kael looked at his tribe, then down at Lina.

His voice was steady.

“Let’s go home.”

And with his mate in his arms, the tribe surrounding them, and a destiny rising on the horizon—

The Alpha and the Flame began the journey that would change everything.
