Chapter 181

Chapter 181

Ava returned to her place, changed clothes, and headed out again to the cemetery in the suburbs.

She had only heard Jack mention that Nancy's grave had been repaired—she wouldn't feel at ease until she saw it with her own eyes.

Her mood was heavy throughout the taxi ride. Even though she had taken her own measures to retaliate against Sarah and Nola for their crazy actions toward Nancy's grave, she still felt she had wronged her mother.

Deep down, she felt it was her fault that her mother had suffered such humiliation. If it hadn’t been for that man, she wouldn't have angered those two lunatics.

The car stopped outside the cemetery. She told the driver to wait for her there; otherwise, she wouldn't be able to get a cab when she was ready to leave.

She got out and walked straight to the entrance. A uniformed guard came out from the security booth to greet her. Ava had been coming frequently these past two days and had become a familiar face to the security staff.

"Ms. Davis, let me go with you."

Ava was a bit surprised and politely declined.

"No need to trouble yourself, thank you. I can go by myself."

The guard looked uncomfortable. After what happened to Nancy's grave, he had been hired by Robert for good money–going from bodyguard to cemetary security guard. If the pay wasn't so generous, he wouldn't have taken this job.

Robert had specifically instructed him that if Ms. Davis came again, he must ensure her safety.

He gave a half-hearted response and followed at a distance behind her.

Ava walked to Nancy's grave and saw that the tomb, which had been destroyed beyond recognition earlier, was now clean and tidy. Fresh flowers were placed in front of the headstone–she knew the mysterious person who came to visit her mother had been there.

She couldn't figure out the person's relationship with Nancy, but they must have been someone very important in her mother's life. Since this person had never shown themselves to her, she couldn't think of any way to express her gratitude.

She took out paper and a pen from her bag and left a note at Nancy's grave.

On the way home, Lucas sent her a Facebook message containing a gossip article. She wasn't interested in other people's business and was about to close it when she saw the headline contained the words "the Morgan Group CEO William," with the rest of the long title cut off by ellipses.

She opened it to read the details and was instantly stunned.

[The Morgan Group CEO William's Beloved Wife Pregnant and Hospitalized]

Ava's heart jumped to her throat. Fortunately, there was no photo of her inside, but netizens were extremely enthusiastic, with everyone in the comments sending their blessings.

She opened her X account and sure enough, she received countless mentions and private messages. The topic of Mrs. Morgan of the Morgan Group being pregnant had already shot to the top of the trending list.

Meanwhile, William went to find Dr. Hill again but came up empty–the doctor was truly a busy person.

James sat in the driver's seat, looking at his phone.

"Mr. Morgan, please check what I'm sharing."

William opened the link James shared. The next second, his brow furrowed. The words "the Morgan Group's Mrs. Morgan pregnant" made him furious.

That woman — who gave her the nerve to call herself Mrs. Morgan and spread this news to the media?

"Push back the meeting."

He dropped that line, abruptly pushed open the door, got out, and headed back to the hospital building.

In the ward, Sarah had woken up from her nap. With Steven's comfort, she gradually recovered her spirits and no longer believed ghosts were haunting her.

Nola had stopped her crazy rambling and lay in bed with a blank stare, not saying a word or acknowledging anyone, still immersed in her own world.

William strode in, bringing a chill with him.

Seeing him enter, Sarah's face broke into a smile.

"William, you came to keep me company?"

William's face was dark.

"Who told you to leak the pregnancy to the media?"

He started right off with an accusation.

Sarah was confused by the question. Her phone wasn't with her—she was completely cut off from the internet and had no idea what had happened.

She felt so wronged that she was about to cry.

"William, people know about my pregnancy?"

William said angrily,

"Still pretending?"

This tactic of leaking pregnancy news to the media to create public pressure was common in wealthy circles. No one but her would do this.

Sarah cried out in distress.

"William, I really don't know what you're talking about. My phone isn't with me. Can you show me what happened?"

When Sarah cried, Steven felt terrible, almost tearing up himself.

"Mr. Morgan, Sarah really doesn't know anything. These past two days she's been watched by your people, and then yesterday's incident happened. She didn't even have her phone—she couldn't possibly be the one causing trouble. Please believe her, she can't take any more stress. She's my only precious daughter!"

Hearing Steven's last sentence made William uncomfortable. This old fool only recognized Sarah as his daughter and treated Ava like nothing.

What do you mean by "only daughter"?

He glanced at Nola and snapped,

"Didn't I say to move her out? Why is she still here?"

Steven wiped the sweat from his forehead.

"Mr. Morgan, I've already contacted about a room. Her mental state is unstable right now — she can't share a room with strangers . Single rooms are in short supply, but we can get one by tonight at the earliest, then she can be moved."

William could barely accept her moving out tonight.

Sarah was still wiping tears pitifully beside them.

"William, will you never trust me again? I really didn't do anything. I swear on myself and the baby in my belly — if I did this, let us both die."

Hearing her say such extreme things again, William's whole body tensed up. No matter when, she always responded to problems in such an extreme way.

Faced with her terrible words, he gave in.

Both dying—what a terrible threat!

"It better not be you!"

As William left, Sarah cried pitifully.

The ward was left with only the three family members again. Steven glanced at the crazed Nola and spoke with difficulty.

"Sarah, the specialist William called has arrived. We don't know when they'll bring the specialist over to examine you. Before that happens, we need to figure something out."

Sarah wiped her tears.

"What can I do? He doesn't believe anything I say now, pins every accusation on me, and won't listen to my explanations."

Steven narrowed his eyes and encouraged her.

"Whether he believes it or not, we can't panic. First of all, the examination absolutely cannot happen. The specialist is being protected–we can't get to them."

Sarah sniffled.

"Dad, why are you saying all this useless stuff? Don't you think I know this is urgent? You're just making me anxious without coming up with any useful solutions."

Sarah was still somewhat blaming Steven for encouraging her to confront Howard, then running away after making Howard so angry he coughed up blood.

Steven's eyes flashed.

"How are you talking to me, child?"

His gaze fell on the delirious Nola, and his eyebrows raised as he suddenly had an idea.

"Sarah, why don't you just pretend to be crazy? Like your mother. When the specialist comes, they can't do anything to a crazy person. Just refuse to cooperate with the examination–they'll have no choice."

Sarah paused.

"Dad, will that work?"

Steven settled into his chair with a calculating look.

"It'll work. You pretend to be crazy to avoid the specialist's examination, then later we'll pressure William to get the marriage certificate."

And so it was decided.
