Chapter 44 Chapter 43

Chapter 44 Chapter 43
Sable’s POV

The moment he moved—

Everything snapped.

The air shifted violently, like something unseen had just been torn open, and the first of them lunged forward.

Fast.

Too fast.

Leonidas intercepted him before he could get close to me, their bodies colliding with a force that shook the ground beneath us. The sound of claws meeting flesh, of power slamming into power, echoed through the clearing.

And then—

Chaos; that was not like before.

This wasn’t wolves fighting for dominance.

This wasn’t a test.

Something raw.

Something broken.

"They’re not holding back!" Kael shouted as he shifted mid–motion, his wolf bursting forward into the fight with brutal precision.

Caius moved just as quickly, blades flashing in his hands as he cut through two attackers at once, his movements sharp, efficient—lethal.

Zander stepped aside instead of forward.

Watching.

He always stood watching. But I could feel it, even he was tense now.

Because this wasn’t predictable.

This wasn’t controlled.

It was disorder.

And they thrived in it.

A sharp growl snapped my attention forward just as one of them broke past the others, his eyes locked directly on me.

Not distracted.

Not pulled away.

Focused.

On me.

My heart slammed hard against my chest.

He lunged.

I didn’t think.

I didn’t hesitate.

I reacted.

The power surged out of me instantly, silver and darkness colliding as it burst forward like a wave.

It hit him mid–air.

Hard.

His body slammed into the ground, cracking the earth beneath him.

But he didn’t stay down.

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

And slowly pushed himself back up.

"That’s it," he said, his voice twisted with something almost excited. "That’s what we came for."

A chill ran down my spine.

"You’re not getting anything from me," I said, forcing my voice to stay steady.

He tilted his head.

"We already are."

More of them pressed in.

Not just attacking—

They were just testing.

Pushing.

Drawing it out.

They weren’t just trying to win.

They were trying to provoke me.

"Don’t let them control the pace!" Caius shouted from somewhere to my left.

"I’m not!" I snapped back.

But even as I said it—

I felt it.

The pull.

The pressure.

The way they were circling, tightening, forcing me to react faster, harder, stronger.

Leonidas slammed another attacker into the ground, blood streaking across his arm as he turned sharply toward me.

"They want you to lose control!"

"I know!"

"Then don’t give it to them!"

Easy for him to say but harder to do.

Because the more they pushed—

The more the power inside me responded.

It wasn’t wild anymore.

But it wasn’t quiet either.

It wanted to move.

To act.

To end this and that scared me.

Because I didn’t know how far it would go if I let it.

Another one lunged.

This time from behind.

I turned too late—

But he never reached me.

A blur of movement slammed into him mid–strike.

Kael.

His wolf tore into the attacker with a ferocity that made even the others hesitate for a split second.

"Stay focused!" he barked.

"I am!"

"Focus harder!"

Zander’s voice cut in smoothly.

"They’re adapting."

That made my stomach drop.

"What do you mean?"

"They’re learning your rhythm," he replied. "Your reactions."

Another wave of attackers rushed forward.

Faster now and more coordinated than the one from before.

Leonidas cursed under his breath.

"They’re not supposed to fight like this."

"They’re not wolves," Caius reminded him coldly.

And that was the problem.

They didn’t follow instinct.

They didn’t follow structure.

They followed opportunity.

And right now—

That was me.

The man from before stepped forward again, untouched by the chaos around him.

Watching.

Always watching.

"You’re holding back," he called out to me.

"I’m controlling it," I shot back.

He smiled.

"Same thing."

"No, it’s not."

He took another step closer.

"Let it go."

The words hit something deep inside me.

A dangerous kind of temptation.

"End this quickly."

For a split second—

I hesitated.

Because part of me knew...

He wasn’t wrong.

I could feel it.

The power wasn’t struggling anymore.

It was waiting.

Waiting for permission.

Waiting for me to stop holding it back.

But the moment I did–

What would happen?

Would I still be me?

Or would I become something else?

"Sable!"

Leonidas’s voice snapped me out of it.

"Don’t listen to him!"

I exhaled sharply.

Pulling back.

Centering myself.

"I’m not," I said.

But the doubt lingered.

And he saw it.

Of course he did.

"That hesitation," he said softly. "That’s where you lose."

"No," I replied. "That’s where I choose."

His expression shifted slightly.

Not that of amused anymore nor of relaxed.

Interested.

"Then choose."

The challenge hung in the air.

Heavy.

Real.

Another attacker broke through.

Closer this time.

Too close.

I didn’t push him back.

I didn’t blast him away.

I stepped forward.

Toward him.

And for the first time–

I didn’t react with power.

I reacted with control.

My hand lifted.

Not to strike.

But to stop.

And when he reached me—

Everything stilled.

The moment froze.

Not because I forced it.

Because something deeper responded.

The power didn’t surge outward.

It settled.

Wrapped.

Focused.

His body locked mid–motion, his eyes widening as something invisible held him in place.

Not hurting him.

Not breaking him.

Stopping him.

Completely.

The clearing went silent.

Even the others paused.

Because this—

This wasn’t destruction.

This was something else entirely.

I stepped closer.

Meeting his gaze.

"You don’t need to fight me," I said quietly.

His breathing was uneven.

Strained.

"You don’t understand...."

"Then explain it," I said.

The hold on him didn’t tighten. It didn’t hurt.

It just...... held.

For the first time, he didn’t attack.

Didn’t resist.

He hesitated.

And that—

That changed everything.

The man leading them watched carefully now.

Very carefully.

"You’re trying to change something that can’t be changed," he said.

I looked at him.

"Then why are you here?"

A pause.

Then—

"Because we want to see if you can."

Silence.

That wasn’t the answer I expected.

But it made sense.

In a twisted way.

"You’re not just here to take power," I said slowly.

"No," he admitted. "We’re here to see if you’re worth following..... or worth breaking."

The words settled heavily.

Because that—

That was the real test.

Not from the wolves.

Not the packs.

Them.

The ones who existed outside everything.

The ones who had nothing to lose.

I released the one in front of me.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He didn’t attack.

Didn’t move.

Just stood there.

Breathing hard.

Confused.

The clearing stayed quiet.

No one moved.

No one rushed in.

Because something had shifted.

Again.

"You don’t need to destroy everything to prove a point," I said.

The leader’s gaze stayed locked on me.

"And you don’t need to build something new to survive."

"Then what do we need?" I asked.

His answer came quietly.

"Something worth believing in."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Because that—

That was the truth underneath all of this.

They weren’t just chaos.

They were lost.

Broken by a system that didn’t work for them.

And now—

They were testing if I could be different.

I inhaled slowly.

"You don’t have to follow me," I said.

"But you don’t have to fight me either."

A long silence followed.

Then—

The leader stepped back.

Just one step.

But it was enough.

"We’re watching," he said.

It was not a threat.

Not a promise.

Something in between.

Then he turned.

And one by one—

They followed.

Disappearing back into the forest.

Just like that.

The clearing fell silent again.

But this time—

It wasn’t tension.

It was something else.

Relief.

Shock.

Uncertainty.

Kael shifted back, exhaling sharply.

"...okay, that was weird."

Zander smiled faintly.

"That was controlled."

Caius walked up to me quickly.

"You’re okay?"

I nodded.

"Yeah."

But my hands were still shaking slightly.

Not from fear.

From what I almost did.

Leonidas stepped closer.

His gaze searching mine.

"You didn’t lose it."

"No," I said quietly.

"I didn’t."

And that mattered.

More than anything else.

Behind us, the dragon watched in silence.

Still judging.

Still waiting.

Because this wasn’t the end.

Not even close.

I looked toward the forest where they had disappeared.

And deep down—

I knew.

They weren’t gone.

They were just waiting.

Watching.

Deciding.

And next time—

The choice might not be so peaceful.

The real test...

Was still coming.
