Chapter 43 Chapter 43
Leonidas’s POV
The moment they stepped out of the trees, my wolf reacted.
Not with aggression or even with dominance but with warning.
Every instinct in me sharpened at once, my body going still as my gaze locked onto the figures emerging from the forest.
They weren’t wolves.
Not really.
They looked like us—same build, same movement but still something about them was… off.
They felt wrong, different.
Like something had taken the shape of a wolf and forgotten how to be one.
"What the hell are they?" Kael muttered under his breath.
No one answered immediately because we were all seeing it.
Feeling it.
The lack of structure.
The absence of hierarchy.
No Alpha scent.
No pack bond.
Just.... chaos. And hunger.
"They don’t belong to any pack," Caius said quietly.
I nodded.
"I can tell."
Their scent was fractured.
Unstable. Like it didn’t fully exist in one place.
Zander stepped slightly to the side, his expression sharpening for the first time since this began.
"Interesting," he murmured. "They’re not just wild."
No, they weren’t.
Wild wolves still had instinct.
Still had order.
These didn’t.
The dragon’s voice echoed behind us.
"They have abandoned the laws."
My jaw tightened.
"Or the laws abandoned them."
The dragon didn’t respond.
But I felt the shift, the tension even if it was wary, that alone told me how serious this was.
More of them stepped into the clearing.
Ten.
Twenty.
More.
They were too many but they didn’t rush.
They didn’t attack; rather they spread out slowly, circling, their eyes locked onto one person.
Sable.
Of course.
It was always her.
My body moved before I thought about it.
I stepped in front of her again, placing myself between her and them.
"You stay behind me."
"I’m not hiding," she said.
Her voice was calm.
Too calm for this moment.
I didn’t turn to look at her.
"Right now, you are."
A pause.
Then—
"Fine."
Kael exhaled sharply.
"Didn’t think I’d hear that today."
Caius stepped up beside me, his posture tense.
"They’re not here to talk."
"No," I agreed. "They’re here to test."
"Or take," Zander added softly.
My wolf growled low.
That was definitely not happening.
One of them stepped forward slowly and deliberately.
He looked almost normal—
Until you saw his eyes.
There was no depth or restraint, only hunger.
And something darker.
"You changed the order."
His voice sounded wrong.
Like it didn’t quite belong to him.
Sable stepped forward slightly behind me.
"I gave them a choice."
The man tilted his head.
"That’s the same thing."
"No," she said. "It’s not."
He smiled.
And it wasn’t a good smile.
"Everything has order," he said. "You break it... and things like us happen."
A chill ran down my spine.
"What are you?" I asked.
His gaze flicked to me briefly.
Then back to her.
"We’re what’s left when the system fails."
Caius’s expression hardened.
"Or when you reject it."
"Same thing," the man replied.
Kael scoffed.
"That’s not how that works."
"It is for us."
More of them shifted closer,
but they were not rushing, just tightening the circle.
Making us feel pressure and controlled.
Sable stepped forward again.
This time— I didn’t stop her.
Because something in her expression told me she needed to face this rather than hiding.
"You said you abandoned the laws," she said.
"We didn’t abandon them," he replied. "We were cast out."
Silence.
That changed something.
Even I felt it.
Because that—
That was different.
That wasn’t rebellion.
That was rejection.
"Why?" she asked.
The man’s smile faded slightly.
"Because we refused to kneel."
My wolf stirred.
Recognition.
That word again.
Kneel.
Sable’s voice was softer now.
"I’m not asking anyone to kneel."
"That’s the problem."
Her brow furrowed.
"What?"
"You remove control," he said. "You remove order."
"And without order....."
He spread his arms slightly.
"We exist."
The truth in his words settled heavily in the air.
Because he wasn’t wrong.
Not entirely.
Zander stepped forward slightly, interest clear in his eyes.
"You’re not just rebels," he said. "You’re consequences."
The man looked at him.
"Yes."
Kael exhaled slowly.
"Great. Love that for us."
Caius didn’t react.
But I could feel it.
The tension, the calculation.
He was already thinking ahead.
Already planning.
Because this—
This wasn’t just a confrontation.
It was a warning.
"You came here for a reason," Sable said.
Not a question.
A statement.
The man nodded once.
"We came to see if you’re different."
"And?"
His gaze sharpened.
"You’re not."
The words hit hard.
But Sable didn’t flinch.
"Then why are you still standing here?"
A flicker of something passed through his eyes.
Something like interest and respect or maybe just curiosity.
"Because you might become something else."
Heavy silence filled with uncertainty.
My wolf didn’t like that.
Didn’t like him.
Didn’t like any of this.
"What do you want?" I asked.
This time, he looked directly at me.
"We want what everyone else does."
"And that is?" I pressed.
His smile returned. Sharper now.
"Power."
Of course.
It was always this power.
"But not like them," he added, gesturing vaguely toward the other wolves.
"Not through rules and not through structure."
His gaze slid back to Sable.
"Through you."
My body tensed instantly.
"No."
The word came out before I could stop it.
Final.
Absolute.
Caius stepped forward too.
"She’s not your solution."
The man tilted his head again.
"She already is."
The air shifted.
Danger rising fast now.
Kael cracked his neck slightly.
"Alright..... I’m officially done talking."
Zander sighed softly.
"Such a shame. This was getting interesting."
Sable lifted a hand slightly.
"Wait."
We all stilled.
Because even now, we still listened to her.
"What happens if I say no?" she asked.
The man didn’t hesitate.
"Then we take what we can."
My wolf surged forward filled with rage and protectiveness.
Ready.
"You’re not taking anything," I growled.
The man’s smile didn’t fade.
"We’ll see."
The moment snapped making the tension break.
And I knew—
There was no stopping this now.
Sable’s power flickered behind me controlled.
But ready.
Caius shifted his stance prepared.
Kael grinned.
And finally.
Zander stepped back slightly.
Observing.
Always observing.
The dragon’s wings lifted slowly behind us.
Watching.
Judging.
Waiting.
And in that moment—
Everything became clear.
This wasn’t just about her changing the system.
It was about what happens after. Because when you break something this big, you don’t just create freedom rather you create an opportunity for everyone.
Even the ones who should never have it.
The man stepped forward.
And this time—
He didn’t stop.
Neither did we.
And as the first clash began,
I realized something we should have seen coming.
The real fight....
Was only just beginning.
