Chapter 42 Chapter 42
Sable’s POV
Silence stretched across the clearing heavily.
Like everything or everyone was waiting for something to break.
I could feel it.
Not just in the air but in them as well.
The wolves.
Every single one of them.
Their emotions weren’t hidden from me anymore; rather, they were pressed against my senses like waves.
Confusion.
Anger.
Curiosity.
Fear.
And something else... like
Hope.
It startled me.
Because I hadn’t expected that.
I didn't expect them to feel that here and definitely not now.
My chest tightened slightly as I stood there, surrounded by creatures who could either follow me....
Or tear everything apart.
And for the first time since all of this began...
I understood what it truly meant to stand alone.
Not physically, but in decision-making.
Because no one could make this choice for me.
Not Leonidas.
Not Caius.
Not anyone.
Except I.
The dragon’s presence loomed behind everything, silent but watchful, waiting and judging.
It was always judging.
"You’ve said your piece," the Alpha’s voice broke through the quiet calmly.
But no longer dismissive.
"Now they’ll decide."
I swallowed slowly.
I didn’t look at him; instead, I looked at them.
The wolves.
Rows of them.
Different sizes. Different strengths. Different eyes watching me with different thoughts behind them.
Some looked at me like I was a threat to them.
Others like I was something sacred.
Most didn’t know what to think.
And honestly?
Neither did I.
But that didn’t matter anymore, because standing here while feeling all of this...
I realized something simple.
This wasn’t about knowing everything. It was about choosing anyway.
I took a step forward.
No one stopped me.
No one moved.
"I’m not going to force you," I said.
My voice came out steady, stronger than I felt inside.
"I won’t command you. I won’t control you."
A few wolves shifted uncomfortably and uncertain.
Good.
They should be.
"Because if you follow me," I continued, "it has to be your choice."
A low murmur spread through them.
I could feel it ripple.
Some were resisting, some listening, and some already pulling away.
And that hurt more than I expected.
But I didn’t stop because I have already spoken.
"I don’t have all the answers," I admitted.
That made more heads lift up with their eyes sharpened towards me.
They could feel honesty which they weren’t used to.
"But I know this," I said, my gaze sweeping across them. "If the only way this world works is through fear and control... then maybe it’s time it stops working that way."
The words settled deeply inside every one of them.
I could feel it.
Something was shifting among them and it's enough.
A wolf stepped forward.
Large and scarred.
His eyes hard as they locked onto mine.
"And if you fail?" he asked.
The question hit directly.
I didn’t look away.
"Then I fail," I said.
A ripple of surprise moved through them.
Because that wasn’t the answer they expected.
"No excuses," I added quietly. "No pretending. If I fall, then I wasn’t strong enough to lead you."
Silence again.
Different this time as it was less hostile but more... thoughtful.
The wolf studied me for a long moment.
Then—
He stepped back, though not submission or acceptance but at least not rejection either.
And that mattered.
More wolves began to move.
Small shifts.
Different whispers among them.
Decisions forming.
Behind me, I could feel Leonidas' gaze.
He stood still watching, ready for anything.
While Caius stood tense but alert, waiting for something to go wrong.
And part of me knew—
Something would.
Because it always did.
The Alpha stepped forward again.
"This isn’t how power is built," he said.
I turned to him.
"Then maybe power has been wrong."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"You think ideals will hold them together?"
"I think choice will."
"And when they choose against you?"
I didn’t hesitate.
"Then I let them."
That answer—
That was the one that changed everything.
Because it meant I wasn’t trying to keep them.
I was willing to lose them.
And that kind of power?
It’s dangerous.
Zander’s voice came softly from behind.
"She’s either brilliant..."
A pause.
"Or completely reckless."
Kael snorted.
"Why not both?"
Caius didn’t say anything.
But I could feel his attention on me protectively.
Always protective towards me.
The dragon finally moved.
Though just slightly but still enough to silence the murmurs again.
"The old law is broken," it said.
Its voice rolled through the clearing like distant thunder.
"And a new path stands before you."
No one spoke.
No one even dared to.
Because this—
This was bigger than any of us.
"You may choose," the dragon continued, its silver eyes sweeping over the wolves.
"Follow the Queen..."
Pauses a little.
"Or walk away."
The words echoed.
Final and unavoidable.
My heart pounded.
This was it.
The moment.
The decision.
The first real step into whatever came next.
The wolves shifted, some stepping forward slightly, others pulling back.
Dividing.
Choosing.
I didn’t move.
Didn’t speak.
I just watched. And waited.
One wolf stepped forward.
Then another.
Slowly and carefully.
Not rushing. Not forced.
They were choosing.
My breath caught.
Then more.
A small group forming in front of me.
Not large or overwhelming, but still enough.
Enough to matter.
Enough to feel real.
Relief flickered in my chest but I didn’t let it take over.
Because not all of them moved.
Some stayed where they were watching with uncertainty.
And some—
Turned away, walking back toward the forest.
Leaving.
The sight hit harder than I expected.
A quiet ache settling in my chest.
But I didn’t stop them.
I didn’t call them back.
Because this—
This was the choice I made.
And I had to stand by it.
The Alpha watched it all unfold.
His expression unreadable.
Then—
He exhaled slowly.
"Well," he said. "You’ve done something no one has ever done before."
I didn’t respond.
Because I didn’t know if that was a good thing yet.
Caius stepped closer to me.
"You okay?" he asked quietly.
I nodded.
"Yeah."
But it wasn’t entirely true.
Because this—
This was only the beginning.
Leonidas moved to my other side.
"They chose," he said.
I glanced at him.
"Some of them."
"That’s how it starts."
His words were simple but they grounded me.
Reminded me—
I wasn’t completely alone.
The dragon’s gaze settled on me again.
"You’ve taken the first step."
I swallowed.
"And the next?"
Its eyes seemed to darken slightly.
"The world will respond."
A chill ran through me.
"What does that mean?"
It didn’t answer directly.
Instead—
"Not all will accept this change."
The Alpha’s voice followed.
"Some will see you as a threat."
Kael crossed his arms.
"Some already do."
Zander smiled faintly.
"And some will want to control her."
Caius’s expression hardened.
"They’ll try."
Leonidas’s voice was low.
"Let them."
I exhaled slowly.
Because I could feel it now.
The shift.
The ripple spreading beyond this clearing.
Beyond this forest—this moment.
What I did here—
It wasn’t small, neither was it contained.
It was growing.
And with it—so was the danger.
The wind picked up again.
Stronger this time, carrying something new.
A scent that was unfamiliar.
My head snapped toward the forest.
"What is that?" I asked no one in particular.
Leonidas tensed instantly.
"I smell it too."
Caius’s eyes narrowed.
"That’s not one of the packs."
Kael frowned.
"Then what is it?"
The dragon lifted its head slightly.
And for the first time—
I saw something change in its expression.
Something rare.
Something dangerous.
Almost like recognition.
"They’ve come sooner than expected."
My chest tightened.
"Who?"
The dragon’s voice dropped.
Low.
"The ones who do not follow any law."
The air shifted.
Darkened.
And from the edge of the forest, figures began to emerge.
Not wolves.
Not fully.
Something else.
Something wrong.
My heart started pounding again.
Because deep down—
I already knew.
This wasn’t just another test and it wasn't just another choice.
This was the beginning of something worse.
And as the first of them stepped into the clearing—
I realized one terrifying truth.
Breaking the old world...
Had just invited something far more dangerous in.
