Chapter 41 Chapter 41

Chapter 41 Chapter 41
Caius’s POV

War.

The word didn’t just echo, it settled heavily with certainty that was inevitable.

And the worst part?

She meant it.

I watched Sable stand there in the center of the clearing, surrounded by wolves who could tear her apart in seconds and yet not one of them moved.

Not because they couldn’t but because they didn’t know if they should.

There was hesitation and uncertainty that was power.

Not the kind that destroys.

The kind that changes everything. And that scared me more than anything I had seen so far.

"You’re making a mistake".

The Alpha’s voice cut through the silence, calm but edged with something sharper like concern.

Real concern.

Sable didn’t back down.

"Then let me make it".

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it carried.

It always carried a voice different from hers though sound like her.

I clenched my jaw.

She was stepping into something she didn’t fully understand yet and I knew it.

Because I did.

I had seen what this world does to power like hers.

It doesn’t accept it.

It breaks it.

Or twists it into something unrecognizable.

"She doesn’t owe you anything", I said, stepping forward.

Every instinct in me was on edge, not just because of the wolves but because of what was coming next.

The Alpha’s gaze shifted to me.

"And you think you can protect her from this?"

I didn’t hesitate.

"Yes".

A few wolves scoffed under their breath while others watched more carefully.

The Alpha tilted his head slightly.

"You’re not wrong", he said after a moment. "But you’re not right either."

I frowned.

"That doesn’t make sense."

"It will," he replied.

"Soon."

I didn’t like that sound, not one bit.

Behind me, I could feel Leonidas shift restlessly and protective towards her.

He didn’t trust this either.

Good.

At least I wasn’t alone in that.

Kael let out a quiet breath.

"This is going nowhere," he muttered.

Zander, of course, looked entertained.

"This is going everywhere", he said softly.

I ignored him while keeping my focus stayed on Sable.

Because even though she looked calm.

I knew her.

There was tension in her shoulders, a slight tightness in her hands.

She wasn’t afraid.

But she wasn’t untouched by this either.

And that meant—

She could still be pushed.

Still be tested, be hurt.

The dragon moved then, not aggressively but enough to draw every eye.

"You stand at the edge of change", it said, its deep voice rolling across the clearing.

No one spoke.

No one interrupted it.

Even the wolves listened.

"You reject the old law", it continued.

Sable lifted her chin slightly.

"Yes."

The dragon’s eyes narrowed.

"Then you must create a new one."

Heavy silence because that–

That was worse than anything.

Breaking something is one thing.

But replacing it?

That’s where everything falls apart.

Sable didn’t answer right away.

And for a second–

I thought I saw doubt flicker in her eyes but then it was gone.

"What if I don’t want a law?" she asked.

A ripple went through the wolves making them feel uneasy and confused.

The dragon didn’t react immediately.

But when it did, its voice was colder.

"Then there will be chaos".

Kael huffed.

"Sounds about right".

Leonidas shot him a look.

"Not helping".

Zander chuckled softly.

"Oh, I disagree. This is the most honest moment we’ve had all day".

I exhaled slowly.

"Enough".

They quieted, but the tension didn’t ease.

It couldn’t at least not now with all that was going in.

Sable took a small step forward.

"You said I would fall if they don’t accept me", she said, her eyes on the dragon.

"Yes."

"And if I don’t accept them?"

That question made something shift. Even the dragon paused.

That question, it wasn’t part of the rules.

It wasn’t even something anyone expected her to ask.

The Alpha’s expression changed slightly to something like interest and curiosity but still a dangerous expression.

"That’s not how this works", he said carefully.

Sable looked at him.

"Then explain it to me."

He hesitated.

And that told me everything I needed to know.

Because people like him?

They don’t hesitate not unless something is slipping out of their control.

"The packs need a Queen", he said finally.

"And the Queen needs them".

"Why?" she asked.

He paused again but longer this time.

"Because that’s how balance is maintained".

Sable frowned slightly.

"That’s not an answer."

"No", Zander said quietly, almost amused. "That’s an excuse."

The Alpha’s eyes flicked to him–sharp.

But he didn’t argue, because deep down he knew it too.

Sable looked around at the wolves again.

Really looked this time, not just seeing them but feeling them and understanding them.

I could tell because her expression softened slightly.

Not of weakness but of something else—recognition.

"They’re afraid", she said.

The words were quiet, but they hit harder than anything else.

The wolves stiffened.

While some growled, others looked away.

But none of them denied it because that was the truth.

"They don’t trust what they don’t understand", Leonidas said.

Sable nodded slowly.

"Neither do I".

That honesty–it changed something.

It was subtle but still real.

The air shifted making it less hostile though it was still tense a bit.

But not on the edge of breaking anymore.

The dragon watched her carefully.

"You see more now."

"Yes", she said softly.

"Then 'choose'".

The word landed like a weight.

Again.

Always back to that choice.

Sable inhaled slowly and I saw it this time.

That hesitation, pressure, and the weight of everything pushing in on her alone.

I hated it.

Because she should not have to carry this alone.

"She’s not ready", I said.

The dragon didn’t even look at me.

"She is".

"She’s not–"

"She is".

The finality in its voice shut me up not because I agreed.

But because arguing wouldn’t change anything.

Sable closed her eyes briefly, then opened them again but this time, it was now clear and steady.

"I won’t choose one Alpha", she said.

The tension spiked again.

"But I will choose something else".

That caught everyone off guard even me.

"What does that mean?" Kael asked.

Sable looked at the Alpha, at the wolves, then back at the dragon.

"I’ll lead", she said.

My breath caught.

"But not like this".

There was silence, the kind that feels like the world is holding its breath.

"You don’t fight for me", she continued. "You don’t kill for me."

Murmurs broke out.

Disagreement, confusion, anger but still she didn’t stop.

"If you want me as your Queen–then you follow me because you choose to. Not because you’re forced to".

The words hit differently.

Not as a command but more like a challenge.

The Alpha’s jaw tightened.

"That’s not how loyalty works."

Sable met his gaze.

"Then maybe that’s the problem."

That shifted something deep.

Because she wasn’t just rejecting their rules.

She was also exposing the cracks in them. And people don’t like that.

Not the leaders or the warriors and definitely not anyone who’s built their power on those rules.

"You’re asking them to change everything they know", I said quietly.

She looked at me.

"I know."

“They won’t all accept it."

"I know."

"Then what happens when they don’t?"

That was the real question, the one no one wanted to ask.

Sable didn’t look away.

"Then they’re not mine to lead."

The words landed hard.

Final.

And for the first time, I felt it.

Not fear or doubt but respect, because she wasn’t trying to control them rather she was willing to walk away.

And that kind of power?

It’s rare and dangerous.

The clearing went still again.

No growls.

No movement.

Just total silence.

The Alpha studied her for a long time carefully.

Then—he smiled.

"You’re either going to change everything", he said quietly.....

"Or destroy it".

Sable didn’t flinch.

"Maybe both".

The wind picked up again.

The trees rustled.

The wolves shifted.

Everything was uncertain.

And in that moment—

I realized something terrifying.

This was not the end of the conflict, it was not even the beginning.

It was the line.

The one you cross and can never go back from.

And Sable?

She had just stepped over it.

The question now wasn’t if war would come

Rather it was—

Who would stand with her when it did.
