Chapter 113 The One Behind the Darkness

Chapter 113 The One Behind the Darkness

Sable's POV

The smile sent a chill through my entire body.

It wasn't cruel neither was twisted.

It was calm.

Too calm.

The figure stood inside the endless darkness as though it belonged there.

Silver eyes.

Long black robes that seemed woven from starlight and shadow.

A face untouched by age.

He looked... human.

Yet every instinct inside me screamed that he wasn't.

The Devourer's enormous form surrounded him like an ocean surrounding a single island.

He slowly stepped forward.

With every step, the darkness obeyed him and not the other way around.

Lucian whispered beside me,

"This shouldn't be possible..."

Lucian's POV

No...

No, no...

The Devourer had never served anyone.

It had existed before kings.

Before worlds.

Before even the First Flame.

Nothing commanded it.

Unless the impossible happened.

The figure looked directly at me.

"It's been a long time, Lucian."

My blood froze.

I knew that voice from home.

From the First Age.

"...Caelum."

The name escaped my lips like a forgotten prayer.

The battlefield fell silent.

Aster closed his eyes.

Eden lowered his head.

Even the Creator's light dimmed for a brief moment.

Leonidas' POV

I looked between them.

"Who is Caelum?"

No one answered immediately until Aster spoke.

"He was..."

"...the Creator's first disciple."

Every warrior stared in disbelief.

The Creator's... first disciple?

Then how—

My thoughts stopped.

If he had once served the Creator...

How had he ended up inside the Devourer?

Caelum's POV

How fascinating.

After all these ages...

They still remembered my name.

I smiled gently.

"You all look surprised."

"I suppose I should feel honored."

My gaze settled on Sable.

"So..."

"You are the one carrying the Dawn Flame."

"You've done well better than any before you."

There was no sign of mockery in his voice only quiet admiration.

That somehow made him even more unsettling.

Moros' POV

Caelum...

The name echoed through fragments of memories I had long forgotten.

I remembered sitting in the Hall of Wisdom as a child.

A man in white robes teaching us.

He was patient, kind and brilliant.

He always had answers.

He always smiled.

He was the one who taught me to read the ancient stars.

The one who bandaged my hands after my first sword lesson.

The one who told me...

"Every question deserves to be asked."

I staggered backward.

"No..."

"It can't be you."

He looked at me sadly.

"Hello, Moros."

Aster's POV

I had prayed he was truly gone.

After the First Sundering we searched everywhere but we found only fragments of his staff.

We believed the darkness had consumed him.

We were wrong.

He hadn't been consumed.

He had chosen it.

Sable's POV

"Why?"

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Caelum turned toward me.

"Why what?"

"Why would someone who served the Creator stand with the Devourer?"

He smiled.

A tired smile.

"The same reason many good people fall."

"They become convinced..."

"...that hope is too expensive."

Silence.

He continued.

"I watched children die."

"I watched kingdoms collapse."

"I watched mothers bury their sons."

"I asked why."

"No answer came."

"So I searched."

His silver eyes lifted toward the endless darkness.

"And I found silence."

The Creator's Voice

"I answered."

Caelum looked toward the Light.

"You answered with patience."

"I answered with freedom."

"You answered with waiting."

"I answered with love."

Caelum's smile disappeared.

"And while You waited..."

"...they suffered."

The King's POV

The battlefield had become a courtroom.

No swords.

No attacks.

Only truth.

And somehow...

Truth hurt more than steel.

I looked at Caelum to see he wasn't lying.

His grief was real.

His anger was real.

He truly believed he had chosen the kinder path.

That frightened me more than hatred ever could.

Eden's POV

This was always his greatest wound.

Caelum could never accept unanswered pain.

He wanted every tear explained.

Every tragedy prevented.

When answers did not come quickly enough he mistook silence for absence.

Just as Moros once had.

Caelum's POV

I stepped forward.

The Devourer's darkness swirled gently around my feet.

"I did not join the darkness because I hated the Light."

"I joined it because I believed the Light had failed."

His words echoed across the battlefield.

Every person listening felt the weight of them.

Even Sable lowered her gaze because she, too, had asked similar questions in her darkest moments.

Caelum looked directly at her.

"You understand me."

She met his eyes.

"I understand your pain."

A long pause.

Then she shook her head.

"But I don't accept your conclusion."

For a while, a flicker of surprise crossed Caelum's face.

The Final Scene

The Creator's light brightened once more.

"Caelum."

The voice was filled with both sorrow and affection.

"You still believe this is about winning."

"It never was."

Caelum slowly closed his eyes.

"And there it is, the answer You always give."

The Devourer's darkness surged violently around him.

"No more words."

"If hope wishes to survive..."

"...let it prove itself."

He raised one hand.

The darkness beneath him split apart.

From its depths emerged twelve towering figures clad in obsidian armor, each carrying weapons forged from living void.

Lucian's face hardened.

"The Void Judges..."

Aster whispered,

"I thought they were only a legend."

Each Judge took a step forward making the earth shook.

Twelve enemies.

Each radiating power equal to the greatest warriors of the First Age.

Caelum lowered his hand.

"Defeat them..."

"...and perhaps I'll believe hope still deserves

tomorrow."

Sable's POV

The twelve Void Judges spread across the battlefield.

Each one wore armor as black as the emptiness between stars.

No faces.

No voices.

Only glowing silver eyes beneath their helms.

When they drew their weapons, the air itself split apart.

One carried a spear wrapped in living shadows.

Another wielded twin curved blades that drank in the surrounding light.

One held a massive hammer carved from obsidian while the tallest carried no weapon at all as its empty hands radiated enough power to make mountains tremble.

Leonidas stepped beside me.

"So..."

He exhaled slowly.

"I guess we're doing this."

I smiled despite everything.

"I guess we are."

Caelum's POV

I watched them carefully.

This was never about victory.

Not truly.

Power reveals nothing.

Pressure reveals everything.

Would they fight only for those they loved?

Or would they fight for those they had once called enemies?

That answer...

Would decide the fate of Creation.

Lucian's POV

I recognized the formation immediately.

"They're not attacking randomly."

The King turned to me.

"What do you mean?"

"The Judges aren't choosing opponents."

"They're choosing hearts."

Almost as soon as the words left my mouth, the twelve Judges began moving.

Not toward the strongest warriors but toward the ones whose greatest wounds remained unhealed.

The First Judge stopped before Moros.

Its sword slowly rose and the silver eyes beneath its helmet burned brightly.

A deep voice echoed.

"Judgment of Guilt."

Moros closed his eyes.

"I expected you."

The Second Judge walked toward the King.

Its shield reflected every soldier who had died under his command.

"Judgment of Responsibility."

The King's grip tightened around his sword.

The Third Judge stood before Sera.

Its staff dripped with dark energy.

"Judgment of Regret."

Sera's face paled.

The Fourth Judge smiled beneath its helmet. Or at least it sounded like one.

It pointed directly at Leonidas.

"Judgment of Fear."

Leonidas laughed.

"Fear?"

"You picked the wrong wolf."

But beneath his confidence his wolf stirred uneasily.

The Fifth Judge faced me.

The Dawn Flame flickered inside my chest.

The Judge spoke only one sentence.

"Judgment of Hope."

I frowned.

"What does that even mean?"

It didn't answer.

Aster's POV

Now I understood.

Caelum wasn't asking them to win a battle.

He was asking them to survive themselves.

The Void Judges could not be defeated by strength.

Only by truth.

Marcus' POV

A Judge stopped in front of me.

Finally!

I cracked my neck and grinned.

"Let's dance."

The Judge tilted its head.

"Judgment of Pride."

"...Wait."

"My pride?"

Kael walked past me, his own Judge following close behind.

Without looking back, he muttered,

"About time someone said it."

Marcus glared.

"I am not proud!"

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"You have said 'I'm amazing' seventeen times today."

"I have not!"

"You just made it eighteen."

Even Sable could not hide a laugh.

For one brief moment the tension surrounding them broke.

The Creator's Voice

The laughter echoed across the battlefield.

Warm.

Alive.

Real.

"Never underestimate joy."

It reminded them.

"Darkness cannot imitate genuine laughter."

The Void Judges remained silent but several of them hesitated.

Moros' POV

The Judge before me raised its sword.

Instead of attacking...

It showed me memories.

Every village I burned.

Every innocent life I ended.

Every friend I betrayed.

The weight became unbearable.

My knees buckled.

The Judge asked quietly,

"Can such a man be forgiven?"

I stared at the images.

For centuries my answer would have been no.

But now I looked toward Sable.

Toward Aster.

Toward the King.

Toward those who had chosen to believe I could still change.

Then I answered.

"Yes."

The Judge remained silent.

"Not because I deserve it."

I continued.

"But because forgiveness is the only reason I still have a chance to become better."

The memories shattered.

The Judge stepped backward and a crack spread across its obsidian armor.

Lucian smiled.

"He passed."

Sable's POV

One by one...

The trials had begun.

Not with swords.

With questions.

The Judge before me slowly lifted its blade. Its silver eyes locked onto mine.

It finally spoke.

"If saving the world required sacrificing Leonidas..."

It took one step closer.

"...would you do it?"

The battlefield froze.

Leonidas looked at me.

He didn't speak neither did beg instead he simply waited.

The Dawn Flame inside me flickered violently.

For the first time since the final battle began...

I didn't know the answer to chose as the question echoed through my soul.

"If saving the world required sacrificing Leonidas... would you do it?"

Everything became silent.

The battlefield disappeared.

The Void Judge.

The Devourer.

The armies.

Even the Creator's Light faded until only Leonidas and I remained standing in an endless white expanse.

He looked at me with the same gentle smile he had worn the first day we met.

"I know what you're thinking."

Tears burned my eyes.

"I don't know the answer."

He stepped closer.

"You do."

I shook my head.

"No."

"If I choose you, I could lose everyone."

"If I choose the world..."

"...I lose you."

My voice broke on the last words.

The Void Judge's POV

This is the oldest question.

Love one.

Or love many.

Every age has answered differently.

Every answer leaves scars.

The Dawn Bearer must choose.

Leonidas' POV

I hated seeing her like this.

Sable always carried everyone else's pain as though it belonged to her.

I took both of her hands.

"Listen to me."

"If that day ever comes..."

She immediately shook her head.

"No it won't."

"Sable."

"No! I won't hear it!"

Tears rolled freely down her cheeks.

"I've already lost too much I'm not losing you too."

I gently wiped away one of her tears.

"You taught me something."

She looked at me through blurred eyes.

"Hope."

"Hope isn't pretending loss will never happen."

"It's choosing love anyway."

Sable's POV

His words hurt.

Because they were true.

The Judge watched us silently.

Waiting.

I remembered everything.

My parents.

My pack.

The First Kingdom.

Every sacrifice that had brought us here.

Then I remembered something else.

The Creator's words.

"Love is not measured by what it keeps."

"It is measured by what it is willing to give."

I finally understood.

The question itself...

Was wrong.

The Creator's Voice surrounded me.

"What do you see?"

I closed my eyes.

"I see fear."

"Look deeper."

I did.

And suddenly I smiled.

I turned toward the Judge.

"My answer is no."

The battlefield seemed to hold its breath.

The Judge tilted its head.

"You would let the world perish?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"I reject your question."

Silence.

"You assume saving Leonidas and saving the world cannot happen together."

I took one step forward.

"But hope searches for the path no one else can see."

"I refuse to believe love demands choosing which life deserves to exist instead I'll fight until I find another way."

The Judge remained motionless for a moment then it lowered its sword.

A thin crack appeared across its chest.

Then another.

Then another.

Golden light poured through the fractures.

Lucian smiled from across the battlefield.

"She didn't answer with certainty."

Aster nodded proudly.

"She answered with faith."

Caelum's POV

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Most heroes answer quickly.

They choose the many.

Or the one.

Sable chose neither.

She challenged the question itself.

Exactly as he once did.

For the briefest moment, I remembered standing before the Creator, asking impossible questions.

A memory I had buried for ages.

Moros' POV

The First Judge shattered into countless fragments of light.

The guilt I had carried for thousands of years remained.

But it no longer ruled me.

I looked toward Sable.

"Thank you."

She smiled warmly.

"We're not finished yet."

"No."

I answered.

"We're just beginning."

The Battlefield

One by one, the remaining Void Judges advanced.

The Judge of Fear raised its blade toward Leonidas.

The Judge of Responsibility stood before the King.

The Judge of Regret extended a hand toward Sera.

Marcus cracked his knuckles.

"Looks like everyone gets therapy today."

Kael sighed.

"Only you would call this therapy."

Marcus grinned.

"I'm trying to stay positive."

Even Lucian laughed quietly.

The sound surprised everyone.

Hope was still alive.

The Final Scene

Suddenly one of the remaining Judges stepped out of formation.

Not toward a warrior.

Not toward a king.

It walked directly toward...

Eden.

Eden's smile disappeared.

For the first time since the beginning of the war, he looked afraid.

The Judge stopped only a few feet away. Its voice echoed across the battlefield.

"Judgment of the First Witness."

Lucian's expression turned to horror.

Aster whispered,

"No..."

"Not that one..."

Eden slowly lowered his head.

Then he spoke words that left everyone stunned.

"I've been running from this trial..."

"...since the day the world was born."
