Chapter 102 The Breaking Heart

Chapter 102 The Breaking Heart

Sable's POV

The sound of the Heart breaking echoed through every corner of Elysium.

Not like stone nor like glass.

It sounded... alive.

A cry.

A painful, heartbreaking cry that seemed to come from the world itself.

The palace trembled violently beneath our feet. Dust rained from the towering ceiling as golden cracks spread across the marble floor, racing outward like lightning.

The Heart of Creation floated above its pedestal, no longer glowing with a steady light. Instead, it flickered between brilliant gold and terrifying darkness.

Its heartbeat became erratic.

Thump...

Thump...

THUMP!

The force of the last pulse knocked everyone backward.

Leonidas caught me before I fell.

"Are you hurt?"

I shook my head, though my ears were ringing.

"No..."

But the world was.

Outside the palace, bells continued to ring without anyone touching them.

The floating islands surrounding Elysium began drifting apart. The sky itself rippled like disturbed water.

Something was terribly wrong.

Sera's POV

I had feared this moment for seven thousand years.

Even while imprisoned inside the crystal, I could hear the Heart's voice.

Every day...

Every hour...

It had whispered the same warning.

"When I awaken... I will begin to die."

I looked toward the glowing sphere.

"I'm sorry..."

My voice barely escaped my lips.

The Heart answered with another painful pulse.

The King stepped beside me.

"What is happening?"

I closed my eyes.

"The seal is gone."

His expression changed immediately.

"No..."

I nodded.

"The Heart was never imprisoned to protect itself."

"It imprisoned itself..."

"...to protect the world."

Silence spread through the chamber.

Marcus frowned.

"I don't understand."

Sera turned toward everyone.

"The Heart is not just the source of magic. It is the thread holding every world together."

She pointed toward the widening cracks.

"When Moros damaged it..."

"...he damaged reality itself."

The room became deathly quiet.

Leonidas' POV

I didn't like where this was going.

Not one bit.

"Can it be repaired?"

Sera hesitated.

That hesitation answered my question before she spoke.

"It can."

Hope flickered through me.

Then she finished.

"But the cost..."

Her eyes filled with sorrow.

"...has always been everything."

Sable stiffened beside me.

"No."

She had heard it too.

There was only one way someone described a price like that.

Sacrifice.

I stepped in front of her instinctively.

"No one's dying."

Moros chuckled softly.

"You always say that."

I glared at him.

He didn't even look threatened.

He looked... entertained.

Moros' POV

Hope.

Such a fascinating weakness.

Even now, standing before the end of existence itself...

They searched for another answer but there wasn't one.

There never had been.

The Heart required balance.

Life for life.

Soul for soul.

That was the law established before kingdoms ever existed.

The First Queen knew.

The King knew.

Even Azrael understood.

Only these children still believed destiny could be rewritten.

How adorable.

Azrael's POV

Moros smiled too soon.

That was always his flaw.

He believed he already understood the ending.

He didn't.

Not this time.

I looked toward the child standing quietly near the Heart.

Eden.

He still hadn't acted.

Which meant...

He was waiting.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Eden's POV

Everyone keeps talking.

Adults always do.

But nobody is listening.

Not to the Heart.

Not to the world.

Not to the silence between heartbeats.

I walked toward the pedestal with no one to stop me.

The Heart glowed softly as I approached.

It recognized me just as I recognized it.

I reached out and placed my small hand against its cracked surface.

Immediately...

The entire palace froze.

Time itself stopped.

The falling dust hung motionless in the air.

The flames on every torch became still.

Even the cracks spreading across the floor stopped moving.

Everyone except me.

And one other person.

Sable.

She blinked in confusion.

"What's happening?"

I smiled gently.

"We finally have time to talk."

She looked around at the frozen world.

"...How?"

"Because the Heart asked."

Her eyes widened.

"The Heart can do this?"

"It can do much more."

For the first time since I'd met her...

I wasn't smiling like a child.

I looked ancient.

Tired.

Older than the stars themselves.

"Sable..."

I said quietly.

"There are things you deserve to know before time begins again."

Sable's POV

I stared at Eden.

No...

At whatever—or whoever—he truly was.

The playful smile that always lit his face was gone.

The child standing before me now carried himself with quiet authority, as if he had witnessed the birth of countless worlds.

His silver eyes reflected galaxies instead of light.

I swallowed hard.

"Who... are you?"

He smiled faintly.

"I've had many names."

"Tell me your first one."

For a moment, sadness crossed his face.

"I don't remember it anymore."

The answer somehow felt more heartbreaking than if he had refused to tell me.

He looked at the frozen Heart.

"I was there before kingdoms."

"Before wolves."

"Before magic."

My breath caught.

"I was there..."

"...when the Creator gave the first heartbeat to the universe."

The words sent a chill through me.

I wanted to ask if he was a god. Instead, I asked the question that mattered most.

"Why me?"

He looked at me with gentle eyes.

"Because you keep asking the wrong question."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"You keep asking why the throne chose you."

He shook his head.

"It didn't."

I stared at him.

"The throne..."

"...waited for you."

My mind raced.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It doesn't have to."

Eden walked slowly around

the Heart before continuing.

"The First Queen wasn't chosen because she was perfect."

"The King wasn't chosen because he was powerful."

"Neither were their brothers."

"They were simply the people who answered when the world called."

He looked back at me.

"So did you."

"I never heard any call."

He smiled.

"You answered anyway."

His words stirred something inside me.

Memories.

Not ancient memories.

My own.

The day I defended a stranger even though I was afraid.

The night I refused to abandon someone who had betrayed me.

The moment I chose Leonidas instead of power.

The throne hadn't chosen those moments.

I had.

Eden's POV

She's beginning to understand.

Good.

She'll need that understanding.

Because what's coming next...

No Queen has ever faced.

I touched the Heart gently.

The crack glowed brighter.

"The Heart isn't dying."

Sable looked confused.

"But—"

"It's changing."

"Into what?"

"I don't know."

That answer surprised even me. For the first time since the beginning...

The future had become uncertain.

And uncertainty...

Was hope.

The Heart of Creation.

It had no voice.

Not one that mortals could hear.

Yet it remembered.

It remembered stars being born.

It remembered oceans forming.

It remembered the first laugh.

The first tear.

The first promise.

Now...

It remembered Sable.

Not as another Queen.

As someone entirely new.

The old cycle had ended.

The Heart was preparing for another.

Sable's POV

A warm light surrounded us.

Images appeared in the air.

Not memories.

Possibilities.

I saw Elysium rebuilt.

Children laughing through its gardens. Leonidas standing beside me with silver streaks in his dark hair.

Marcus teaching young warriors while loudly insisting he wasn't getting old. Kael pretending not to care while secretly smiling.

Noctis watching the sunrise without fear.

Then...

The vision changed.

The city burned.

The Heart shattered completely.

Darkness swallowed every kingdom.

I reached toward the images.

"They're futures?"

Eden nodded.

"Both."

"Which one is real?"

He smiled sadly.

"Neither."

"Yet."

Eden's POV

"The future..."

I said quietly,

"...isn't written anymore."

Sable frowned.

"I thought fate couldn't change."

"It couldn't."

I looked toward the frozen King.

"Until all of you changed it."

Leonidas.

The King.

Sera.

Sol.

Even Azrael.

Every impossible choice had broken another link in destiny's chain.

Now...

The future belonged to those willing to create it.

Sable's POV

I felt tears gathering again.

"So we're not trapped?"

"No."

"Then why does everyone keep talking about sacrifice?"

Eden's smile faded.

"Because freedom always costs something."

I looked at the Heart.

"What does it want from me?"

"It wants nothing."

"It only asks one question."

"What question?"

He stepped closer.

His voice became almost a whisper.

"When the moment comes..."

"...what kind of Queen will you choose to be?"

Before I could answer—

A sharp crack echoed through the frozen chamber.

The Heart pulsed violently.

Eden's eyes widened.

"They found us."

"Who?"

He looked toward the motionless doors.

"They've learned to move..."

"...even while time is asleep."

For a moment since time had frozen...

Fear crossed his face.

The palace doors began to open by themselves.

A dark silhouette stepped through the entrance.

Even in frozen time...

It was walking.

Slowly.

Purposefully.

Toward us.

The sound of their steps echoed unnaturally through the frozen world.

Every instinct inside me screamed to run.

The figure walked slowly into the chamber.

Not hurried.

Not cautious.

Confident.

Each step of his left black ripples across the marble floor, as though darkness itself was following.

I turned to Eden.

"I thought time had stopped."

"It did."

"Then how is he moving?"

Eden's expression grew unusually serious.

"There are only a few beings who can walk between moments."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"And none of them should be here."

The figure stopped several feet away from us.

A hood covered its face, its hands were hidden beneath a long black cloak.

Then...

It spoke.

"You've grown, little Keeper."

Eden sighed.

"I hoped you wouldn't find us."

"So did I."

The stranger slowly lowered his hood and I gasped.

He looked... ordinary.

A young man with dark hair and calm gray eyes.

No glowing aura.

No monstrous appearance.

Yet the air around him felt heavier than anything I had ever experienced.

He smiled gently.

"My name no longer matters."

"But once..."

"...they called me Chronos."

Eden's POV

Chronos.

The Keeper of Time.

One of the First Three.

Long before kingdoms...

Before wolves...

Before even the Heart chose its first Queen...

There had been three guardians.

The Keeper of Life.

The Keeper of Time.

And me.

The Keeper of Balance.

We had once stood together.

Now...

Only one remained untouched.

"You shouldn't interfere," I told him.

Chronos folded his hands behind his back.

"I could say the same."

"I protect balance."

"You protect hope."

His smile was almost sad.

"And hope has already changed too much."

Sable's POV

None of this made sense.

First Moros.

Then Azrael.

Now another ancient being.

How many secrets had the world been hiding?

I stepped beside Eden.

"Is he our enemy?"

Chronos looked at me before Eden could answer.

"I don't wish to be."

"But you will become one if necessary."

His honesty caught me off guard.

He wasn't threatening me.

He was warning me.

Chronos' POV

This girl...

She carried none of Sera's pride.

None of Moros' arrogance.

None of Azrael's certainty.

That made her impossible to predict.

Dangerous.

The future surrounding her was blank.

I had never seen that before.

Not once.

Not in all the ages I had watched time flow.

Perhaps...

The Creator truly had chosen differently this time.

Sable's POV

"You came here for the Heart."

Chronos nodded.

"Yes."

"You want to destroy it?"

"No."

"I want to save it."

I blinked.

"What?"

Eden closed his eyes.

"I knew this would happen."

Chronos looked toward the cracked Heart.

"If it breaks completely..."

"...time will collapse."

"The past, present, and future will become one."

"The dead will walk beside the living."

"Kingdoms long destroyed will return."

"So will every monster ever sealed."

My blood ran cold.

The consequences were far worse than I had imagined.

"So how do we stop it?"

Chronos looked directly into my eyes.

"There is only one way."

"What is it?"

"You must enter the Heart."

Silence.

I frowned.

"Enter it?"

"The Heart remembers everything."

"It is the first memory ever created."

"If you reach its center..."

"...you can heal it."

Hope flickered inside me.

"Then I'll do it."

Chronos didn't smile.

"You may never return."

Leonidas' face flashed through my mind.

The people I loved.

The life I had finally begun to build.

I swallowed hard.

Before I could answer, the frozen world suddenly trembled. Cracks spread across the air itself.

Eden looked up.

"Time is waking."

Chronos stepped backward.

"We are out of moments."

He looked at me one last time.

"When the choice comes..."

"...remember this."

"The greatest Queens..."

"...never ruled from a throne."

"They ruled from their hearts."

His body dissolved into countless silver particles.

The moment the last one vanished time surged forward.

The palace exploded back into motion.

Dust crashed to the floor.

The Heart thundered.

The bells outside rang again.

Leonidas grabbed my shoulders.

"Sable!"

I blinked.

Everything had happened in less than a heartbeat.

Yet it felt like hours.

"What happened?"

Marcus asked.

"You just... froze."

I looked at the Heart.

Then at Eden.

The child smiled again.

The ancient wisdom was gon and he looked like himself once more.

He simply shrugged.

"You were thinking."

Only Sable knew that wasn't true.

Far above the palace, thunder rolled across the sky. Moros looked toward the Heart and frowned.

Azrael slowly turned his head toward the horizon.

For the first time in thousands of years...

Both ancient beings sensed the same thing.

Something else was coming.

Something older than kings.

Older than the Heart itself.

And somewhere beyond the edge of existence...

A single golden eye slowly opened.
