Chapter 46 Cue and the Psycho Doctor pt 2
“This might be cold!” she said cheerfully as she pulled up Trigger’s dress and squeezed some clear goo on her stomach.
Trigger flinched, almost slapping the goo off of her, but the other nurses held her down.
“It will be fine, now, just relax!” Mary said in a sing-song voice. She began to use the wand to spread out the goo, making little gray pictures appear on the bright box next to her. “Now look here,” she said.
Trigger and Cue looked, and to their surprise, they saw the shape of a tiny baby face on the screen.
“How did you do that?” Cue asked, getting as close to the screen as possible.
“Old world magics aren't so strange if you have a mechanic that can understand and fix them. The rest? Knowledge passed down and books left behind. I couldn’t tell you if something was internally wrong with your baby by looking at this screen, but I can tell if their heart is beating and if they are breathing. And…” she paused, smiling that too wide smile again, “I can tell you the gender of the baby.”
Mary’s head slowly tilted to the side, her grin spreading, lips rolling back too far as she seemed to bare her teeth more than to smile. “It’s a girl,” she said, and the excitement in her voice wasn’t for Cue’s benefit at all.
The other nurses gasped, one of them leaving the room in a hurry.
“Will you excuse me? I need to have a few words with the doctor about our findings today, but don't you worry. Your little girl is perfect.”
A chill ran up Cue’s spine, making her shiver.
“Something isn’t right,” Trigger said, slipping out of the bed and covering herself properly. Something is very, very wrong.”
They both looked at the last nurse left, neither of them remembering her name. In unison, they closed in, backing her against the wall and away from the door.
“Explain,” Trigger demanded, grabbing the wand off the bed and stretching the cord between white-knuckled hands.
“I-I can't!” The nurse stuttered.
“You will!” Trigger snarled and lunged, wrapping the cord around her neck and pulling tight. “You'll find the only female I care about is standing in front of me.”
The nurse’s eyes bulged, going back and forth over her shoulder and at Cue as she scrambled on the floor, clawing at her neck. When she pissed herself in fear, Trigger released the pressure on her neck and asked again.
“Explain what’s happening here!” Trigger demanded.
“We aren't truly human!” she gasped as soon as she had breath. “We’re clones! We can't–can't carry!”
“Another fucking women breeding colony? After all fucking this?” Trigger yanked the cord tight again.
“Just kill her, let's get out of here.” Cue snarled.
“Do you think—” the nurse gasped around the cord. “---that he’s only experimenting on women? On…on zombies?”
Trigger loosened the cord.
“Go to the basement. It's not about breeding, it’s about evolution. The human race matters little to the doctor; he wants…” she let her voice trail off.
“What does he want?” Cue demanded, grabbing her shirt and yanking her away from Trigger, making the cord pull so tight that blood vessels burst in the nurses’ eyes.
“He wants to be a Cretin!” she choked out, right before she coughed and gagged, and died.
Trigger tied off the cord, so it stayed tight and kicked the nurse’s body away from her.
“Fucking waste of breath,” she snarled.
“What else do you think he’s experimenting on?”
“I don’t even fucking want to know,” Trigger spat on the nurse’s body. “We need to get out of here. Quietly.”
“These people are everywhere,” Cue said, peeking out the door.
“We don’t have much time. Who knows what they have planned for my baby?” Trigger stepped over the nurse's body and peered out of the door with her. “They’ll have all the exits guarded.”
“I bet only a few know about the basement. They’d never expect us to go where they want us. I bet there’s a secret entrance to get his experiments in and out of. I doubt anyone here, but the nurses, knows what’s really happening.” Cue said.
“And the doctor,” Trigger added.
“What else could he have in the basement? That’s the question.”
“Nothing that could kill him, or it would have by now.”
Cue sighed. “What if we go out and pretend like nothing’s wrong?”
“I think that’s the best idea we've got. Look for the basement while just walking around…” Trigger’s voice trailed off as she opened the door and walked out confidently, holding Cue’s hand and plastering her own fake smile on her face.
They smiled at the armed men and nurses, even at the armed women who must also be clones. No one stopped them. They got the okay from Hunter and the Doctor to be here, so why would anyone care? Plus, they didn't know what this little pregnant woman and her smaller counterpart were capable of.
As they walked, they headed back to where the dead and dying were. Each of them grabbed a dirty scalpel as they walked by and extended their condolences. They stayed hand in hand and smiling until they slipped inside the bottom-most staircase they could find.
The lower and lower they went in the stairwell, the louder the screams got. Screams of the dead, screams of women, and…mechanical screams.
They froze in place, knowing the sound of that voice.
They ran down the rest of the stairs and threw open the door, finding a basement of horrors. Through the blood splatters and rotten flesh, they could see zombies ined up and tied to their beds or chained to the wall. Clones were tied up in front of the zombies, wounded to naked them crazed, but not close enough to get bitten or scratched.
“This sick fuck!” Trigger gagged, running past the dead and dying, following the mechanical screams.
They passed rooms with clones inside, and rooms with Cretin’s inside, but when the mechanical parts started to litter the floor, they knew they were getting closer.
They rounded a corner and saw him, an EHEC stripped of all his human skin with his blood and guts pooled at his feet, but still alive.
Trigger screamed and ran for the glass, banging on the door. The EHEC inside had no skin or eyes; it was impossible to tell if it was Gunner, and he wouldn't stop screaming.
Cue turned and grabbed a chair, “Get out of the way!” she shouted, and threw it at the glass, shattering it everywhere. Trigger ran to him, tears in her eyes, feet slipping. She fell to her knees in the broken glass and crawled to him, wrapping her arms around his legs and sobbing.
Cue stepped forward slowly, tears streaming down her face. “Gunner?” She cried, but the EHEC just continued to scream.
