Chapter 22: The Buried Truth
Dawn breaks slowly behind the horizon of the port city. At Ricardo Moretti's palatial mansion, the tense atmosphere from the night before had yet to subside. Ricardo's men are busy checking for injuries and losses after the attack on the harbor. But amidst the chaos, Sofia feels an eerie calm.
She sits in the large living room filled with classic Italian ornaments, staring out the large glass window overlooking the garden. Her mind is racing. Last night, she had saved Ricardo with information he shouldn't have had. The information did not come from luck but from a secret message Sofia had received through an anonymous source.
Ricardo enters the room with heavy steps. His face is cold, his expression unpredictable. However, Sofia knows that behind his calmness, his mind must be filled with questions.
“You saved my life,” Ricardo opens the conversation, his voice hoarse.
Sofia stares at him. “You don't need to thank me. I did it because I didn't want more blood to be shed.”
Ricardo came closer, standing right in front of her. Their eyes met, and Sofia could feel the intensity of the man's gaze. “It's not just a coincidence that you knew about the trap. Where did that information come from?”
Sofia is speechless. How can she reveal that someone is trying to help her and Ricardo without revealing who she really is?
Ricardo felt that something was not right. Last night had taught him that he couldn't fully trust anyone, even those closest to him. Marco's betrayal was proof that threats could come from anywhere.
“If you hide anything from me, Sofia, I'll know,” Ricardo warned, his tone low but sharp.
Sofia stood up, not wanting to appear weak before the man who dominated everything. “I'm not hiding anything from you, Ricardo. I just wanted to survive amidst the chaos you created.”
“And you think I created this mess alone?” Ricardo leaned closer until they were barely apart. “This is a world that existed long before me. I'm just a player in it, like you.”
Sofia wanted to reply, but she fell silent. Ricardo's voice was fatigued, and he spoke with an honesty that rarely came from a man.
In the midst of the emotional impasse, Sofia decides to stay away for a while. She returned to her room, locking the door tightly. At the small wooden table in the corner of the room, she checks her cell phone. The anonymous message she received last night is still on the screen:
“Ricardo will be set up at the port. Make sure he doesn't fall into the trap. There is more than one traitor nearby.”
The message was anonymous, with no clear sender number, but it was too precise to ignore.
“Who are you?” Sofia muttered quietly to herself.
The message was not only a warning but also a hint that a third party knew a lot about Ricardo and his enemies. But what were their motivations?
As Sofia tries to solve the mystery, Ricardo comes knocking on her door. The knock is not friendly; it is more like an order.
“Open the door, Sofia,” he says from outside.
She takes a deep breath before opening it. Ricardo trespassed, closing the door behind him.
“You know more than you're saying. I want answers now,” he demanded.
Sofia knew she couldn't keep dodging. “I got an anonymous message. They gave me information about the trap.”
Ricardo leaned closer, his gaze sharpening. “Who sent it?”
“I don't know. The message didn't show the sender's name or number.”
Ricardo paused for a moment, contemplating the possibility. “Then we have a bigger problem. If any third party knows too much, they could be the biggest threat.”
Ricardo decided to investigate the source of the message. He ordered his IT team to trace the message, but Sofia still felt wary. If Ricardo knew that another party was warning him, what would he do?
On the other hand, Sofia feels she is starting to bond with this mess. Her relationship with Ricardo is getting more and more complicated. There are small moments where she feels the human side of the man, but there are also times when Sofia feels like a pawn in a big game that she can't control.
When night falls, Sofia sits pensively on the balcony of her room, looking up at the dark, starless sky. Ricardo appears, carrying two glasses of wine.
“We need to talk,” he says, handing her one glass.
“What now?” Sofia asks, her voice tired.
“All this. You, me, the messages. I don't believe in coincidences.”
Sofia looked at her. “And what do you think?”
Ricardo smiled a small, unpredictable smile. “I think you know more about this world than you admit.”
Their conversation continued late into the night, with tension constantly hanging in the air. Sofia felt like she was on the brink, unsure of Ricardo's next move.
When Ricardo left the balcony, Sofia felt anxious. She knows that the more he gets involved, the harder it will be for him to get out of this world. Yet, there is something about Ricardo-both the mystery, and the magnetic power-that keeps her going, even though she knows it could destroy her.
Will Sofia succeed in uncovering who is behind the messages? Or will she be dragged deeper into a game that even Ricardo himself can't control?
