Chapter 21: Ship War in the Harbor
The night air in the harbour is cold, piercing Sofia's skin as the wind carries the salty scent of the sea. In the distance, the roar of ship engines mingles with the sounds of the dockworkers' nightly activities. However, tonight is different. The harbour is like a battlefield preparing to explode.
Sofia stands beside Dario, watching from behind a pile of old containers. From where they were hiding, they could see Ricardo standing dominantly in the centre of his group, talking intensely to Marco and some of his trusted men. The tension was evident on all of their faces.
“This plan is too risky,” Dario whispered, a worried expression etched on his face. “Ricardo is too confident. He thinks he's untouchable.”
Sofia observed Ricardo. Although there was much to tell from his piercing eyes and confident stride, Sofia knew another side to the man. Behind his aura of invincibility, he was just a human being with wounds that never healed.
“He knows what he's doing,” Sofia replies quietly, though there is doubt in her tone.
Hours earlier, Sofia overheard a secret conversation between Ricardo and Marco. A big deal is to take place tonight at the port, but Ricardo suspects intruders from a rival mafia family. He plans to lock all the exits and arrest his enemies on the spot.
Sofia, however, has different information. From her conversation with Dario, she knows that Ricardo is being set up. The goods they were supposed to protect had already been diverted by a third party, and tonight was just the stage to get rid of Ricardo permanently.
“I have to stop him,” Sofia said firmly to Dario.
“How? Do you think he'll listen to you?” Dario raised a sceptical eyebrow.
Sofia didn't answer. She knew that changing Ricardo's mind was no easy task.
Sofia came out of the hiding place and stepped closer to Ricardo. She had to talk to him before it was too late.
“What are you doing here?” asked Ricardo sharply when he saw Sofia approaching.
“I need to talk to you. Now,” Sofia demanded, not caring about the suspicious looks from Ricardo's men.
Ricardo signalled Marco to step back before approaching Sofia. “Talk fast.”
“You're being set up. The stuff isn't here,” Sofia said matter-of-factly.
Ricardo looked at her sharply, incredulously. “How do you know that?”
“Believe me. They set this up to bring you down,” Sofia insisted.
Ricardo was silent for a moment, considering her words. Then he smiled a small but threatening smile. “If this is a trap, then we'll turn it around. They will regret their decision.”
As Sofia tried to talk to Ricardo, urging him to back down from this crazy plan, the sound of gunfire exploded through the air like thunder, splitting the silence. The loud boom bounced off the walls of the warehouse, ringing Sofia's ears. Ricardo's men spring into action, scattering for cover behind piles of containers and wooden crates. In an instant, the atmosphere turned into complete chaos.
“Take cover!” Ricardo pulled Sofia quickly, his body protecting her as they took cover behind one of the large steel containers. Bullets whizzed through the air, some of them slamming into the metal near them, producing a loud noise that made Sofia wince. Her chest felt tight, not only from fear but also from the realisation that her life was literally on the line.
“I told you it was a trap!” Sofia shouted, her voice almost swallowed by the incessant roar of gunfire. Her breathing was ragged, her eyes wildly searching for a way to get out of this situation.
Ricardo did not answer. His face was tense, and his eyes scanned the surrounding area carefully like a predator, figuring out where danger was coming from. With quick hand movements, he signalled his men to counterattack. They moved like machines, firing blindly at the unrecognisable shadows.
From the other side of the warehouse, Dario appeared with hurried steps. His face was crumpled, his tense expression reflecting the gravity of the situation. He crouched down near them, taking a short breath before speaking. “They're everywhere! We need to get out of here now!”
“No, we don't. We're staying,” Ricardo replied firmly, his tone cold and confident. There was anger behind his gaze but also a firmness that made Sofia want to shake him awake.
“Then we'll all die!” Sofia cut in sharply, her voice filled with frustration and fear. Her hands clenched tightly at her sides, trying to control the trembling that ran through her body. She knew Ricardo was stubborn, but this was not the time to defend pride or power. This was about survival.
Ricardo looked at her sharply as if weighing his words. Finally, he made up his mind. “Marco, prepare the vehicles. We're going to retreat!”
Sofia notices something suspicious in the chaos. Marco, who was supposed to be leading the retreat, appears to be talking to someone from the enemy side.
“Ricardo! Marco betrayed you!” Sofia shouted.
Ricardo turned his head, his expression turning cold. He saw Marco handing something to a gunman from the enemy group. In an instant, Ricardo pulled his gun and fired, paralysing Marco on the spot.
Ricardo's men fell silent for a moment but immediately returned to defence mode after Ricardo gave the order.
“I've long suspected him,” Ricardo said in a cold tone. “Now we know who the traitor is.”
Sofia could only look at him with a mixture of admiration and fear. Ricardo never hesitated to make tough decisions, even if it meant sacrificing one of his confidants.
That night, Ricardo and his group managed to retreat to safety. However, heavy losses were incurred, and Sofia realised that this war had only just begun.
On the way home, Ricardo spoke in a low tone. “I don't know how you knew about the trap, but you saved my life tonight.”
Sofia didn't answer, just stared out the window with mixed thoughts. Tonight is not only about saving Ricardo but also about uncovering the greater secrets behind power and betrayal.
Tensions between Sofia and Ricardo are mounting, with the line between enemies and allies becoming increasingly blurred. Will Sofia truly survive in this world, or will she be dragged deeper into the dark secrets that are now beginning to unfold?
