Chapter 136 Another enemy

Chapter 136 Another enemy
Sparkle

I had been at James’s place for about two and a half days already, and I was sick of it. I barely knew what was going on in the world because he refused to give me a new phone. He didn’t refuse me in plain sight; he just kept postponing when he would get it for me.
I could see through the act, but I also didn’t have any of my IDs or my cards with me, so I barely had any power to do anything.

To make things worse for me, I am also heavily pregnant; I want to protect my pup, and despite wanting to get out of here, I also don’t have that much energy.

I slowly dragged myself down the corridors of this unfamiliar place, with feelings of resentment weighing heavily on my chest. As I passed the living room, the ongoing news report caught my attention.

“The Roux estate heir returns to the city days after he was speculated to be dead…”

Roux estate heir? That’s Dalton, right? Is Dalton alive? I knew it! I just knew it! Oh, how happy I am. By now he’s at home, looking for me. The thought of him looking for me made me want to run out of the house, but I knew I wasn’t going to go far before James would find me and bring me back. Maybe it’s high time I confronted him; who does he think he is to hold me here against my will?

I dragged myself to his bedroom door and knocked vigorously till he came dashing out with a towel wrapped around his waist.

“Sparkle, is everything alright?” He asked.
“Have you heard? Dalton is alive! I need to go to him now.” I informed him.
“Where did you hear that?” He sounded more disappointed than surprised.

“It’s on TV.” The look he gave me showed he wasn’t expecting to be in the living room, but it was already too late to change anything now; I already had the information, and nothing would keep me here anymore.

“Oh, that’s great, but it doesn’t mean we can move just yet. Ronald might be lurking around the corner. What if the news item is just bait to capture you?” I stared at his face, feeling extremely disgusted by his silly manipulative tactics to keep me trapped here.

“Ronald, stop it. Do you think I don’t see through your sickening lies to keep me here?”
“Oh, you think I’m doing this intentionally? I’m trying to protect you. I would have taken you back home to
Your parents, but they don’t want you back home ....”

“You know what? Take me back home,” I angrily demanded.
“But … didn’t you hear what your mom said on the phone?”

“I clearly remember, and I want her to say it to my face; take me back.” I insisted, but he wouldn’t budge, just like I expected. I have no choice now; I have to find my way out. I can’t afford to have this pup with his father. Dalton has to be there for the birth of his pup. I have to find my way to him.

“I will take you back home; just wait a little. We need to see if Ronald is lurking out there searching for you.”

“I’m sick and tired of hiding from Ronald. I would rather die than stay here with you.” I snapped at him.

“Wow! After I’ve done to find you and bring you back safely?”
“I was much safer with the Walters; don’t start thinking you’re a hero because you came and made me a hostage.”

“Is that what you think? You’re not a hostage.” He desperately tried to explain, but I walked away from him, dragging myself to the living room to listen to the news. He didn’t bother to come and explain anything because he probably knew I wasn’t going to listen.

As I anxiously watched videos of Dalton walking into the pack house, with bruises on his face and hands. He ignored all the reporters and went straight into the room. My heart went out to him; I couldn’t begin to imagine what he had gone through. Soon, another news report surfaced; this time they were announcing the death of Ronald.

They claimed he had fallen off a cliff around the Rouge Square; his body would be laid in State so the loved ones in the pack could mourn him. My eyes glistened with joy; my burden was finally gone, Ronald was finally gone, oh what joy and peace it is to be able to walk the surface of this earth without any fear of being harmed. I’m so proud of Dalton; he has no idea. I can’t wait to get back and give him a big, big hug.

I wanted to dart out of the front door, but knowing James, he probably had his security lurking around to bring me back inside. As I wondered how to get out without getting brought back inside, my eyes settled on the door; there was an inbuilt entrance for the pets- why haven’t I noticed this? I slowly walked to the door and lifted the sliding door with my feet. My joy knew no bounds when I found it open. This is a great escape route if only I can get myself to shift again. I don’t know how to do it yet; all the times that it happened, it happened against my will or knowledge. I tried to manipulate my body in any way to see if I would shift, but it didn’t happen. Or perhaps it only works at night? If that’s the case, I will confirm it tonight.

“Sparkle?” I could hear James call my name from the corridor. “Please, let’s have lunch.”
I let out a sigh. It’s lunch already; soon it will be dinner, then bedtime, and I will be out of this prison in no time.

In the stillness of the night, I slipped out of bed and dragged my feet to the living room. The security didn’t bother to check on me because they thought I was going to watch TV or something. This time, when I tried to shift, it worked. My body was much more fluid this time; despite being pregnant, I was able to climb out through the pet door. Perhaps it was designed for big dogs, which worked out for my good in the end. I walked on the lawns in the backyard and went unnoticed because the guards were busy in the front yard. When I was at the next 5 blocks away from James’ yard, I shifted back into my human form and knocked on the door.

My heart pounded from anxiety and fear, anxious that I might get caught by James and scared that the neighbors here would be of no help at all, but when the door flipped open, nothing prepared me for who I was about to meet.

“Sparkle?” She gasped, “What are you doing here?” She looked down at my belly and back at my face. “You’re pregnant? Oh right!” She sarcastically remarked. There and then, I knew I was either doomed or saved nothing in between.
