Chapter 124 Snowstorm
Chapter 124 Snowstorm

“So if it’s his baby, why did you lie about it being yours?” I questioned him.
He sighed and opened the door a bit wider for me. “Can we have this talk inside the room? There is no reason to be arguing outside a motel room.”
I shook my head reluctantly. If he was going to lie to me, at least he should do it outside of his room.
“Okay, fine. I will tell you what you badly want to know.” He let out a sigh. “You were divorced from your husband when we met; you wanted nothing to do with him. Even when you found out you were pregnant, you assured me that nothing would take you back to him.”
I grappled with whether to believe him; he sounded genuine, but he turned off something in me. Is he a bad person or not? He said he had searched through the woods for 5 days for me, and honestly, I doubt a lot of people will do that for their partners. Maybe it’s just my mind messing with me.
“We can contact your husband if you want. Maybe it can help put things in perspective.” He suggested.dd so
Wait, a person who is lying about my past wouldn’t willingly offer to contact my partner, or maybe he’s doing this to garner my trust.
“Right, let’s contact him. I want to hear his side of the story.”
He nodded, “Come inside; we will go through your records and see if we can find any contacts to your husband.”
“Okay,” I stepped inside and watched as he closed the door. He sat on the bed and pointed to his phone, which was on charge beside the bed.
“You can sit.” He pointed to the vacant part of the bed,
“You know what?” I said as I slowly sat down, “Don’t call my ex. Call my parents if I have any.”
I could see the look of relief on his face. “That I can. But before I call them, I need to warn you… You were estranged from them before this whole incident. So their reactions might surprise you. They don’t even know you’re pregnant.”
I was thrown aback with that revelation. What could my parents possibly have done to push me away to the point that I didn’t even tell them about my pregnancy? Or were they the ones who cut me off?
“How did that happen?”
“I don’t know, let’s just call them.” He dialed my mom’s number, and her picture popped up. I could see so much of myself in her; I had no doubt it was my mom.
“Hello… James?” I heard her say, “It’s been a while; hope you’ve been good.”
“I have, and you?”
“Same here.” There was a brief moment of silence, then she broke the ice by asking questions, “Are you calling because of Sparkle? I haven’t seen that girl since…”
“She’s here with me.” James quickly cut in.
“Oh, she wants to talk now? After how she walked out on us? I bet she found out we were right after all.” She started ranting, and James quickly took the phone off speakerphone.
“Mrs. Engler, maybe now isn’t a good time to talk. I will bring Sparkle to see you tomorrow so we can all talk.”
“Tomorrow is not a good time.” I heard her say. James stared at me, and I shook my head. He simply got the message and said to my mom, “Okay, let’s talk some other time then.”
I started to wonder what kind of life I had lived to end up pregnant, divorced, and estranged from my family. It looked like I had done a lot in the last few months.
“I’m sorry you had to hear all that.” He started to apologize, but I slowly backed off the bed and waddled to the exit. He got up and tried to follow me, but I stopped him.
“I want to be alone. I just want to sleep; that was a long trip to this place, and tomorrow there’s another trip ahead of us.” I kept nagging as I opened the door and stepped out.
“I will take you to see your parents tomorrow.” He tried to be nice, but that only made me upset.
“Didn’t you hear them? They said they don’t want to see me, so please don’t make me see them.”
I walked out of his room and entered mine. When I drifted off to sleep that night, I prayed and hoped that James wouldn’t listen to me. I need to see my parents even if it’s for a second; I need to find out from them if I indeed am engaged to James. My mother seems to have a cordial relationship with him, so it might be possible that he and I were together, but I still need to hear it.
I woke up the next day to strange sounds coming from outside the window. I slowly moved my body out of bed and to the window. As I slid it open, a cold breeze hit me right in the face. I quickly shut it and watched in horror as the snowstorm turned the view into chaos. Everything was covered in icy snow, and the things that weren’t frozen were flying in the storm.
There was a gentle tapping on the door. I knew it was James, so I waddled to the door and flung it open. “Oh no, James! What is happening outside?”
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t think things would escalate this quickly. I checked the weather forecast, and it says things will remain like this for a minimum of 4 days.”
“4 days!” I shrieked. How am I going to survive here for 4 days? I’m pregnant. Can’t I stay here eating takeout? How am I going to get any tests done? I haven’t checked on the baby since my injuries. What kind of mother will I be if I don’t check on the well-being of my baby?
“Don’t panic, I’m calling for backup from home. If things don’t get better by the end of today, we will have to travel through the snowstorm.” He assured me.
It melted my heart how bent he was on taking me back home; maybe I misjudged him. He didn’t seem like a bad person after all. If he meant me any harm, wouldn’t he have done it by now?
He held my hand and led me back to the bed. “Sit down for now. I have ordered some food. I don’t know if they will be able to deliver it, but you must eat. So if they’re not here in the next 15 minutes, I will go out myself and find you something to eat.”
“You can’t risk your life out there…”
“You don’t have to worry about me.” He cut in before I could even finish. The kindness, the tenderness, the softness, all of that, again warmed my heart. Maybe this is it; maybe this is why I fell for him and forgot all about my ex-husband; he was even ready to care for a child that’s not his. He wasn’t bad after all.
