Shackles of the Heart

Aurora’s POV

The room was cold, not Because of the the temperature was cold.but because of the weight of despair pressing against its walls.

A heavy silence lingered, broken only by the faint sound of boots echoing in the hall outside. The air smelled faintly of damp stone, the kind of scent that made my skin prick with uneasiness.

I sat on a single chair at the center of the room, my wrists bound tightly, so tight that any lite movement could tear my skin.

Tiffany was ready to caue me pain, and I know deep down that this was just the beginning of what she had out in store for me.

The door creaked open, and there she was. Tiffany. Her heels clicked against the floor, every step deliberately slow, dripping with arrogance. And beside her, like a shadow that he was. It was the man, I once trusted with my whole heart,

Alex.

My heart should have leapt in relief at seeing him, my childhood friend, my confidant, my ride or die but instead it sank deeper into the pit of my stomach.

I had known, it wasn't a new thing. He had already told me where his loyalty lay now, so I wasn't surprised seeing him beside Tiffany.

But knowing didn’t soften the blow of seeing him standing tall at Tiffany’s side, as though he belonged there from the beginning.

Tiffany’s eyes sparkled with something venomous, the kind of triumph one wears when they finally hold the upper hand. She circled me like a predator savoring the moment before the kill.

“You know,” she began, her voice low but sharp, “I’ve always hated how you look at me. That defiance in your eyes, that silent reminder that somehow you think you’re better than me. But now…” She tilted her head and smiled. “Now you have nothing. And still ….still…you look at me like that without any difference.”

I didn’t answer her. I didn’t trust my voice not to break. My hatred was burning, raw, and I let it speak for me. My eyes followed her every move, not blinking, not wavering, just a silent storm threatening to consume me from within.

Her lips curved cruelly. “That stare of yours, Aurora… it speaks more than your tongue ever could. Hatred. Disgust. Perhaps even fear of me.”

My fists clenched in my lap. She wanted me to speak, to lash out, to break. I wouldn’t give her that satisfaction.

She turned to Alex then, her hand brushing against his arm with familiarity that made my stomach twist. “But there’s something you don’t know. Something I’d like to show you.”

My chest tightened. “Don’t do that,” I whispered, but it was too soft, too fragile.

She smirked and walked up to him. Before I could process, Tiffany leaned in and pressed her lips against his.

The sight hit me harder than any blade could. My best friend. The boy I once trusted with my secrets. The one person who was supposed to be my safe place when the world turned cruel. And now, now he stood there, allowing Tiffany’s poison to touch him, to taint him. To stain him with her wickedness.

It wasn’t love I felt, not the aching desire I had for Dominique. But Alex was mine in another way, my anchor, my friend. Seeing Tiffany’s mouth on his, stealing him from me in this twisted display, made something inside me tear apart.

My heart squirmed, nausea coiling deep within my stomach.

And then Alex… he didn’t stop her. He pulled her closer. His hand gripped her waist as though he had been waiting for this moment. His mouth crashed against hers, deep, hungry. Tiffany moaned into the kiss, the sound filling the room, crawling under my skin like poison.

I wanted to scream. To cry. To tell him to stop. But my throat locked, strangled by the betrayal in front of me. My nails dug into my palms until I felt the sting of skin breaking, warm blood seeping into my fists.

I forced myself not to look away. If they wanted me to watch, I would. If Tiffany wanted me broken, she would have to work harder. I would not give her the pleasure of seeing me shatter, never Dominique had taught me better not to show my enemies what they want to see.

But inside, I was burning but I would never show it.

Dominique’s POV

The night was thick, the air charged with the weight of war. Every turn of the road tightened the coil in my chest. Tiffany had Aurora. And every second she remained in her hands was a second too long.

James sat beside me, his face pale but his eyes resolute. He had insisted on coming despite my protests. I told him he would not survive what was ahead, that I could not console Aurora if I had to bring her father back in a coffin. But James was relentless. His voice shook with desperation when he said, “She’s my daughter, Dominique. If she dies, I die. If she suffers, I suffer. Don’t ask me to stay behind.”

I couldn’t refuse him after that. His determination mirrored my own, and I knew he wouldn’t forgive me if I left him behind.

Our convoy sliced through the darkness, headlights cutting across the empty road. I kept my hand near my weapon, ready for whatever ambush Tiffany had laid out. And then, suddenly the road ahead was blocked. A fleet of black cars stood like sentinels, engines humming, men spilling out with weapons raised.

“Stay behind me,” I ordered James, stepping out with my men. My rage was already boiling over, eager for blood. Whoever dared stand between me and Aurora would meet their end tonight.

But then, out of the shadows he emerged.

Damian.

My brother.

For a heartbeat, the air left my lungs. My grip on my gun tightened. Of all the people I expected, he was the last. His presence was a dagger to my chest. I had thought, I had feared, that he had sided with Tiffany.

But when his eyes met mine, there was no malice. Only fire.

“Damian,” I growled, my voice laced with years of anger and betrayal. “If you stand with her, then you stand against me. And I will cut you down myself.”

He raised a hand, not in threat, but in peace. “I’m not here for Tiffany,” he said, his voice steady, resolute. “I’m here for Aurora.”

The words hit me like a hammer.

He took a step closer, his men lowering their guns as he continued. “Any man who harms her, harms me. Do you understand, Dominique? Regardless of whether she loves me back, regardless of what she chooses, I will not let Tiffany destroy her. I will not stand by while the woman I love is broken.”

The silence between us stretched long and heavy. For years, Damian had been my rival, the shadow clawing at my back, the man I trusted least in this world. And yet… in this moment, I saw truth in his eyes. Truth I couldn’t deny.

For the first time in what felt like forever, we wanted the same thing.

To save Aurora.

The corners of my lips pulled into the faintest smirk, sharp and cold. “Then, brother,” I said, my voice low with determination, “for once, we fight on the same side.”

And just like that, the battlefield shifted.

The Blackwoods, together again.

And nothing would stand between us and Aurora.
