Chapter 276
Chapter 276
Sabrina picked up on the dissatisfaction in Alexander's tone with startling acuity. Immediately, she felt wronged.
"Alexander, what are you trying to say? Don't you want me caring about you and Owen?"
Looking at Sabrina's reddening eyes, Alexander didn't rush to comfort her this time. Instead, he questioned back, "You mentioned Owen?"
"Why don't you listen to this recording first."
With that, Alexander unlocked his phone and played an audio file.
It was Laura's voice!
Sabrina's face flushed crimson. She even forgot to keep up her wounded act.
Finally, unable to bear it any longer, she shrieked and knocked Alexander's phone away!
"Alexander, it's not what you think!"
"It was Laura—yes! Because we fired both her and Sarah, she held a grudge and slandered me like that."
"Is that so?" Alexander interrupted with unusual composure. "Then let's listen to this one."
As Alexander swiped his phone again, Owen's voice emerged.
After the Forbes Group had descended into chaos, Owen had been sent back to the estate to be looked after by Cynthia.
This recording was what Alexander had Cynthia coax out of Owen.
Hearing Owen's childish yet deeply aggrieved voice through the phone, Sabrina could no longer hold herself together.
She was finally afraid—afraid that Alexander knew everything she'd done.
Trembling slightly, she gazed at Alexander with tear-filled, dependent eyes. "Alexander, I never said those things. You have to believe me."
"It must have been Lisa! She never liked me. She must have coached Owen before she left."
Watching Sabrina continue deflecting blame, disappointment flashed through Alexander's eyes.
"Sabrina, before you came back, I already reviewed the security footage from that time."
Sabrina's face went deathly pale instantly, her lips trembling uncontrollably. "So you never trusted me at all."
She suddenly stood up in agitation. "Yes! I did discipline Owen."
"But it was for your sake! Because I wanted to focus completely on the designs and help you defeat Zenith Enterprises Group!"
"That's why I couldn't attend to Owen properly, why I told him not to throw tantrums or make noise all day and distract you."
"Was I wrong to do that?"
Looking at Sabrina's self-righteous expression, Alexander felt an unprecedented weariness in his heart.
He pinched the bridge of his nose.
Seeing this, Sabrina's eyes flickered. She quickly moved behind him and reached out.
But before she could touch him, Alexander blocked her hand. "No need. I can manage on my own."
Sabrina's hand froze mid-air. It took a while before she withdrew it.
For the first time—the very first time Alexander had rejected her touch!
'Charlotte, you mark my words. This is all because of you and your precious son!' she thought.
As Sabrina silently seethed, Alexander spoke again slowly, "Sabrina, maybe we should take some time apart to cool down."
Sabrina's face twitched! Her expression shifted through several changes.
Soon, a harsh glint flashed in her eyes.
"Alexander, are you planning to leave me?"
Sabrina's face crumpled as she turned back to face Alexander, eyes reddening.
"But Alexander, I'm already yours."
"You already wronged Charlotte. Are you really going to wrong me too?"
Watching Sabrina's tears fall in heavy drops, Alexander finally couldn't sit still.
He stood up, showing a trace of guilt. "Sabrina, I'm not breaking up with you. I just want us to take a moment to think."
Sabrina quickly caught the guilt in his eyes. "Alexander, even if we split up, I wouldn't blame you."
"It's just that news of our engagement has already spread. If we separate now to 'cool down,' rumors will fly all over River City in no time."
"Rather than being laughed at like that, I might as well go back abroad."
"And after that, don't look for me again."
With that, she turned heartbroken toward the stairs, as if to pack and leave.
Watching her lonely, sorrowful figure, Alexander's heart softened after all.
He rushed forward and pulled her back. "Sabrina, I'm sorry. I was confused just now."
"Don't leave. Let's get married."
Sabrina was both shocked and delighted. "Alexander, did I hear you right? We're really getting married?"
Alexander felt some regret, but the words were already out. There was no taking them back.
He could only nod. "You heard right. We'll get married."
In that moment, Alexander suddenly felt utterly dispirited.
He'd been so intent on winning Charlotte back, on making amends for past mistakes, yet even approaching her was a foolish fantasy.
He finally understood completely—Landon had been fighting and competing all along because he had his eye on Charlotte. Most infuriating of all, he'd driven Charlotte away himself, handing Landon the perfect opportunity!
Anyway, Charlotte wasn't coming back. So what difference did it make who he ended up with?
In his embrace, Sabrina's lips kept curling upward. She couldn't suppress her smile.
Perfect! She could finally marry Alexander.
Though the Forbes Group wasn't what it used to be, it was still stronger than most companies! More importantly, with Nicole around, she'd never let Zenith Enterprises Group destroy the Forbes Group.
Just wait.
Once she became Mrs. Forbes, she'd find a way to squeeze another fortune out of the Forbes Group!
To prepare for the wedding, Sabrina began constantly visiting various venues.
She wanted to personally oversee every detail of the ceremony. Everything had to be the best!
She wanted everyone to envy her! Including Charlotte!
That day, she was trying on wedding gowns when someone unexpectedly approached.
"Truly beautiful."
Sabrina turned around in surprise. "It's you?"
Calvin looked completely down and out, even his chin covered with stubble.
He stared at Sabrina in her magnificent wedding dress, his eyes flashing with admiration. "You look just as beautiful as I imagined."
Calvin was so absorbed in admiring her that he completely missed the disgust that flickered through Sabrina's eyes.
"What do you want? I'm very busy lately."
With that, Sabrina moved to go change out of the dress and leave.
But after just one step, Calvin grabbed her arm. "Sabrina, wait. Let me look a little longer."
"I'm worried I won't be able to make it to your wedding day."
The pleading in Calvin's eyes was, to Sabrina, nothing but humiliation.
She yanked her hand back. "If you want to talk, talk. Don't grab at me like that. It'd look bad if someone saw."
Calvin froze. "Sabrina, are you disgusted by me?"
