Chapter 87: The Awakening of Power

The dark mist slowly dissipated around Vaiolet, as if it were taking its time to adapt to the new reality. The power she had just received still coursed through her body, as if every cell in her being were being reconfigured, adapted to a new essence, to a force she had never imagined possessing. The sensation was immense, like a deep ocean threatening to swallow her, yet at the same time, it offered her the possibility to control it.

Kael remained at a prudent distance, his eyes fixed on her, observing the transformation with a mix of awe and fear. Despite his love for Vaiolet, despite having witnessed her battles, he had never seen anything like this. The woman before him was no longer just the princess he had known. Something greater, something older, had awakened within her.

—“Vaiolet?” His voice was soft, almost fearful.

Vaiolet lifted her head and looked at him, and in her eyes, Kael saw a mixture of pain and determination. The change wasn’t just physical; something inside her had completely changed. She could still feel her soul, but now it seemed fused with something much vaster, an energy that was foreign to her but which she had decided to embrace.

—“Kael…” Her voice trembled slightly, but not from fear. It was the uncertainty that gripped her heart. “I feel… like everything I was before is fading, but at the same time, I have the sense that I’m stronger, that I can control everything that’s coming.”

Kael approached cautiously, watching every movement of Vaiolet. The change didn’t seem just in her appearance, but also in her presence. It was as if everything she had been until now, her doubts, her fears, had dissolved to make way for something more imposing.

—“You don’t have to do this alone, Vaiolet,” he said, his voice full of concern. He took her hand, but as he did, he felt an unknown power coursing through his body, a dark energy that gave him a strange sense of vertigo. At first, he thought it was just his mind playing tricks on him, but then he understood that the transformation wasn’t just affecting Vaiolet. Some of that power had lingered in him too, though to a lesser extent.

Vaiolet looked at him with a sadness she had never shown before. The sadness of someone who, though stronger, knew that there would always be a price to pay. The price of darkness.

—“You can’t save me from this, Kael. I… I’m the one who has to walk this path, no matter how lonely it may be. But don’t worry, I… I won’t lose who I am. I won’t let myself be consumed. I can’t.”

Kael said nothing more. He knew that, although he wanted to protect her, there was something unbreakable in Vaiolet’s determination. He knew she had made the decision to accept her fate, to embrace the power now flowing through her. But what terrified him the most was that the same power that had saved her could destroy her if it wasn’t controlled properly.

The shadow of the Guardian of Shadows remained in the air, floating like a reminder that this was not a simple victory, but a blessing that could pull her into the abyss. There was no turning back.

Suddenly, the Guardian spoke, its voice resonating in both of their minds, like an echo that would not cease.

—“Vaiolet, you have taken the power, but this is not a gift without conditions. Now you must choose: will you use this power to restore the balance, or will you succumb to the darkness that comes with it? In your hands lies the fate of the world. But remember, if you let the darkness consume you, no one will save you.”

The echo of those words reverberated in the air, and the ground trembled slightly beneath their feet. The energy of the temple seemed to react to her decision, as if it were coming to life. Vaiolet closed her eyes, allowing the words of the Guardian to settle in her mind.

—“I know,” she murmured, her voice full of a strange calm, as if she no longer feared the darkness that was now part of her. She opened her eyes, and her irises glowed with a golden light, as if her entire being had fused with the power she had acquired.

Kael watched her, and in that moment, he understood what that gaze meant. It was not just a reflection of the light from the power. It was the inner strength that had carried her this far, the same one that, though dangerous, would make her stronger. But he also saw something else, something he couldn’t ignore. That light had a price, and Vaiolet knew that sooner or later, she would have to face the consequences of her choice.

—“Vaiolet…” his voice cracked. She was his partner, the woman he loved, but in that moment, something deep inside him told him that she was no longer entirely the same.

—“Don’t worry, Kael,” she replied, as if she had read his thoughts. “I won’t get lost. No matter what comes, I’ll fight until the end.”

Kael wished he could believe her words without hesitation. But the doubts still lingered in his mind. He knew that Vaiolet’s power could be the key to defeating the darkness looming over them, but he also understood that if she didn’t find a way to control it, that same darkness could consume her, and everything she knew.

The room they were in began to change. The walls, which once seemed solid and ancient, now melted into a black substance that emanated from the floor. The symbols that had once glowed with a golden light now paled, replaced by a deep and abysmal darkness that expanded relentlessly.

Vaiolet raised one hand, and without meaning to, the darkness stopped for a moment. It was as if her will could control it, as if she now had the power to stop the flow of everything around her. But in that instant, something inside her began to flicker, like an alarm had gone off. She knew that this power was volatile, that it could change shape, become uncontrollable.

The Guardian of Shadows, seeing this, smiled with an unsettling calm. Although its face was nothing but a shadow, the expression in its eyes showed understanding. It knew that Vaiolet could not continue in this duality for long.

—“You have taken the first step, Vaiolet. But the final battle is still to come. When the time comes, you will have to decide whether you want to embrace the darkness or use it for the light. You will not escape the choice you have made.”

Vaiolet nodded slowly, aware of what was to come. It was not just a matter of power. It was a matter of identity, of humanity, of what she was willing to sacrifice to fulfill her mission. And as she prepared for what was coming, one more question weighed on her heart: would she be able to keep her humanity, or would the darkness consume her completely?
