Chapter 88: The Long Night of Judgment
Vaiolet was surrounded by the dark fog that had emerged from the temple. The shadows coiled around her feet, advancing and retreating as if they were alive. The power she had acquired did not abandon her, and she felt as though every corner of her being had been soaked in foreign energy. It was a sensation she did not fully understand, a mix of fear and fascination, as if she were gazing into the abyss and, at the same time, fearing being consumed by it.
Kael continued to watch her from a distance, not approaching, as if he knew that taking a step toward her at that moment could mean facing something much greater than both of them. Despite the distance, he could not look away, feeling that something had changed in his beloved, something that could no longer be undone. Vaiolet was no longer just the princess he had known, but something more, something he did not fully comprehend.
—"What are you doing, Vaiolet?" —Kael murmured to himself, feeling how fear began to cloud his thoughts. The power she had absorbed seemed to be growing inside her. With every passing minute, it seemed more unstoppable.
Vaiolet suddenly lifted her head, as if she had heard his voice. Her eyes, now shining with a golden light, glowed in the darkness of the room. The vision before her was blurry, as if the world was distorted by a layer of fog. The figure of the Guardian of Shadows still hovered in front of her, but this time something had changed. His presence was even more dominant, more terrifying.
—"Do you know what you have done?" —the Guardian asked, his voice deep like an echo in the room. There was no condemnation in his words, only a somber understanding. He knew what had been triggered in Vaiolet.
Vaiolet, still immersed in the fog of thoughts and emotions she did not fully understand, nodded slowly. She knew she had made an irreversible choice. The power she had absorbed had not only given her unparalleled strength, but it had also opened a door to something much darker. The question now swirling in her mind was whether she would be able to control it before it controlled her.
—"Yes" —she replied, her voice almost inaudible, as if she feared the very words leaving her mouth— "I know what I've done. But I can't turn back now."
The Guardian nodded, his somber face showing a slight smile. Though his face was dark, his gaze seemed filled with wisdom. An ancient knowledge, something that transcended time and space. The feeling that she was facing something ancient, something it had witnessed through many lifetimes, grew in Vaiolet.
—"The power you have taken has a price, Vaiolet" —the Guardian said, his voice low but filled with an imposing gravity. The echo of his words seemed to fill the room, and the atmosphere grew even more tense— "The price is not only yours. Everything you love, everything you have sworn to protect, is now at stake. When it comes to this power, there is no room for doubt or regret. Are you willing to pay what is demanded of you?"
Vaiolet looked at the Guardian, facing his words. She knew this was the ultimate test. She had accepted the power, but at what cost? She knew the fight ahead would not only be against external enemies, but against her own internal demons.
—"I am willing" —she answered, her voice firm, though deep down she felt an anguish she could not calm. She didn't know if she was doing the right thing, but what she did know was that she could not stop now.
The Guardian gestured with his hand, and the room was filled with a blinding light that seemed to come from all directions. The darkness that had been surrounding Vaiolet began to dissolve, but in its place, new visions emerged, like fragments of broken memories, memories that did not belong to her life.
Suddenly, memories of her mother, Amaranta, filled her mind. The image of her mother smiling, of her mother fighting alongside her in the darkest days of her life, appeared before her. But then, that image began to fade, replaced by another more terrifying one: her mother, fallen to the ground, with an expression of fear and despair.
The anguish she felt was unbearable, as if the pain of her mother, and her own, had fused into a single scream. The sadness of her loss, the rage for not having been able to save her, the guilt for not having done enough, all took hold of her being.
—"No" —Vaiolet murmured, her voice broken. She struggled to cling to reality, to reject those memories that were tearing her apart, but the force of the vision was so powerful that she could not avoid being swept away by it.
The Guardian watched Vaiolet's struggle in silence, not interrupting. He knew this was a crucial moment, the moment in which Vaiolet had to face her deepest demons.
—"The darkness that now resides in you is not just an external force" —the Guardian said, his voice resonating in the room, but also inside Vaiolet— "It is a manifestation of your fears, your doubts, your darkest desires. This power you have taken gives you the ability to destroy your enemies, but it can also destroy you."
Vaiolet tried to free her mind from the visions, from the painful images of her mother. She could not surrender now. She knew that everything she had done until now, everything she had fought for, was at stake. The fight ahead was not just a physical battle, but a spiritual and emotional one.
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. In her mind, she focused on her true goal: to restore peace to her kingdom, save her people, and avenge those who had wronged her. She knew she could not afford to succumb to the darkness. She could not let the power consume her.
The vision of her mother faded, replaced by a vision of her kingdom, with its people living in peace, free from the constant fear of oppression. Vaiolet imagined a future in which she herself, with the power she had gained, could protect all those she loved. That vision, that hope, anchored her to reality, giving her the strength she needed to fight against the darkness.
—"I won't lose myself" —she said softly, her renewed determination growing. The light shining within her began to grow, dissipating the shadows that surrounded her.
The Guardian observed in silence, as if he had been waiting for this moment. His eyes, though somber, showed a slight approval.
—"You have passed the first test, Vaiolet. But remember, darkness always lurks, and only those who are truly strong can master it. This is only the first of many battles you will have to fight."
Vaiolet nodded, her eyes shining with a new resolution. She knew that her path to redemption and power would not be easy, but she was ready to fight with all she had. Not just for herself, but for those who depended on her.
The Guardian disappeared into the darkness, leaving Vaiolet and Kael alone once more in the room. Kael slowly approached, observing the change in Vaiolet.
—"Are you okay?" —he asked, his voice full of concern.
Vaiolet looked at him, and in her eyes, a light of hope shone, although there was also a shadow of uncertainty.
—"Yes" —she answered, her voice firm— "But this is just the beginning."
