Chapter 149
Lila watched her aunt leave, the smile on her face fading at just the right moment. She pulled out the hand that Alexander had been holding, "Don't just stand here anymore, let's go to my place."
With that, she went to the trunk to get the gifts Alexander had bought.
He said nothing more, took the things from her hands, and dropped two words, "Lead the way."
Lila acknowledged and walked ahead.
Alexander glanced sideways, looking down at her, "That person just asked if I was your boyfriend. Why didn't you say anything?"
"No need to say anything. My aunt already assumed you were."
"I'm not your boyfriend, I'm your husband."
She didn't know what there was to fuss about and casually tossed out, "Same difference."
Alexander snorted coldly, "I've never had a girlfriend like you."
Lila couldn't be bothered to argue with Alexander.
If she could choose, did he think she would pick a man like him as her boyfriend?
Even if she had to choose, she would pick Chris.
After walking for five minutes, Lila saw her front door.
However, before going home, her steps unconsciously stopped in front of her neighbor's house that had been empty for several years.
She looked at that tightly closed door and remembered the scenes from childhood of playing and fooling around in the streets with the boy next door.
From as far back as she could remember, the boy next door had been her playmate.
His name was Matthew Moore. He was three years older than her and would always take her running through every street and alley in town when they were little. He would also rush out to protect her when she was being bullied. Because of him, her childhood had been happy and fulfilling.
But when she was five, something happened to Matthew's family. They moved away and never came back.
As Lila stood staring at the neighbor's house, Alexander's gaze also fell on that door.
Lila came back to her senses first, lifted her chin toward her own house, and told him, "This is my home."
He acknowledged and followed her inside.
As soon as Lila entered the yard, she called out, "Grandma, I'm home."
"Lila's back, my precious granddaughter." A joyful elderly voice came from inside the house.
Soon after, Lila saw Grandma come out from inside, her face full of smiles.
She quickly ran over to Grandma's side.
The old lady took her hand and looked her over carefully, "Lila, you've lost weight, quite a bit too. Have you not been eating or sleeping well lately? Have you been bullied at their house?"
Alexander stood not far behind Lila. Hearing these words, he frowned slightly.
Lost weight?
How come he hadn't noticed?
Lila smiled, "Not at all. Who would bully me? I've been on a diet recently. Have I really lost weight? Grandma, look again carefully. If I've really lost weight, I'm so happy."
The old lady reached up and pinched her face, "You certainly have lost weight. Your face has gotten smaller. Today Grandma will make your favorite food."
"Oh, Grandma, he came too."
"He?"
Lila stepped aside and pointed at Alexander standing not far away.
He stared at her, his eyes seeming to still take issue with how she referred to him with the cold, impersonal word "he."
Lila ignored it.
When the old lady saw Alexander, her face showed some delight, "Lila, he's so handsome! He looks even better than the Doctor in our town."
The "Doctor" was the only highly educated person in their town who, after graduating, returned to his hometown to focus on urban-rural development. Having studied away for many years and been to big cities, he had a refined manner and was recognized as the most handsome young man in town.
Hearing Grandma's description, Lila couldn't help but smile.
Alexander was indeed very good-looking, very handsome.
Not just in this small town—even in Oceancrest City, there were few men who could compare to him.
Alexander walked over, set down the gifts he was carrying, stood before the old lady, and introduced himself with a gentle expression, "Hello, Grandma. I'm Lila's husband, Alexander."
