Chapter 56 An Utterly Awful Confession
Chapter 56 An Utterly Awful Confession
Emily's POV
Christopher said, "This is my most precious gift. I've had it since I was little. My mom threw it away several times, but I always found it and brought it back."
"Now I'm giving it to you. If you can't see me in the future, looking at it will be like having me by your side."
With that, he put the pendant in my hand without giving me a chance to refuse.
Why do I keep running into idiots? Though I didn't think his gift would be a ring or necklace or anything like that.
But I never expected it to be a little toy figurine.
Christopher grabbed my hand without warning. "It's already evening, what work? You're off the clock. Come on, I'm taking you to meet my mom."
I pulled back, ready to resist, but he leaned into my force and lunged forward. Then his mouth found mine like it had GPS installed.
I stared at him wide-eyed while he kept his eyes closed, pushing his tongue forward.
I tried to resist, but both my hands were instantly pinned down, and my whole body was pressed against the wall by the door.
Naturally, I clenched my teeth to keep him out, but then he suddenly tickled my armpit. I couldn't help but let my guard down for a second, and his tongue immediately pushed through.
I pulled my body back, my tongue retreating too, but Christopher's tongue was long—no matter where I hid, he could catch up and gently touch the tip of my tongue.
Just as my body went soft and I was about to enjoy it, the door swung open.
At the same time, Joshua's voice rang out, "Emily, Christopher's here. Let me take you to see Mrs. Taylor and..."
He saw the scene, immediately brought both hands up to cover his eyes, though his fingers were spread wide apart, openly peeking through the gaps.
"I didn't see anything, I'm still young, don't corrupt me."
I wanted to speak, but Christopher got even more aggressive. I started to resist.
Joshua on the side had already pulled out his phone to record.
Then he suddenly let go.
I stood there frozen, my lips still warm, but my mind went blank for a moment—he just stopped like that? I couldn't describe the feeling in my chest, like something had come halfway and then been yanked away.
Suddenly, he pulled me and ran out.
I was forced to run with him, my head still not recovered from what just happened.
Looking at his back, my blood flowed faster, my heart pounding, a strange feeling welling up inside me.
He clearly said a month, but today he was standing right in front of me—I didn't know why he came back early, but the first thought that popped into my head was whether he did it for me.
That thought made my heart skip another beat.
I shook my head hard, trying to shake the thought away. Don't overthink it. He has his own business, probably just a coincidence.
Messy thoughts flooded my mind, filling my brain completely in an instant.
These scattered thoughts made me feel a vague urge to use the bathroom.
The feeling was like someone gently tickling the soles of my feet after eating honey.
My left hand clutched the pendant tightly, my right hand held by him.
Following him, just following him running like this, forward, forward...
This was a man whose eyes were full of me. Maybe he really was someone worth trusting.
Until...
Several people appeared in my line of sight.
I looked at them one by one.
The woman in front had a gentle demeanor, the right age—probably his mother. Next to her were two kids, a boy and a girl, who looked somewhat like Christopher, most likely the brother and sister he'd mentioned.
Then my gaze froze.
There was another woman, about the same age as Christopher. He hadn't mentioned her.
I vaguely remembered that when Joshua got drunk, he seemed to have said something about a childhood friend.
A strange sense of crisis welled up inside me.
"Mom, look, this is the daughter-in-law I picked for you."
"Ryan, Emma, this is my girlfriend."
The woman about Christopher's age reached out her hand and smiled warmly at me. "Hi, you must be Emily. I'm Mira Thompson. I'm Christopher's best friend, we grew up together as childhood friends."
"Don't be nervous, just think of me as your friend."
She was poised and graceful, her smile pure with a hint of anticipation.
I calmed down, staring at her with cold eyes, without a trace of emotion.
If I had to describe an emotion, it could only be murderous intent.
I looked at her appearance and figure—on par with mine.
Her chest—damn it! Bigger than mine!
My expression grew even more hostile.
Most importantly, she was very young. Although I still hadn't asked Christopher's age, he didn't look older than 27.
But I was already 31.
Being in an age-gap romance, plus with such a young and beautiful childhood friend by his side, I was already at a disadvantage. My sense of crisis grew infinitely stronger in an instant.
Maybe I was being too obvious, because Christopher asked me with concern, "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
If it weren't for his mother being there, I would have killed him already.
I turned my head away, refusing to look at him, saying sulkily, "I'm fine."
Christopher breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good. Let's go eat then. Babe, my mom's here, so you should treat us today, right?"
I glared at him irritably, then said to his mother, "Hello, Mrs. Taylor. I'm Emily, your son's... business partner. It's rare that you could come. I heard there's a restaurant nearby with great food. Let's go there."
Christopher's mother smiled and agreed, seeming quite satisfied with me.
A hint of pride rose in my heart.
When we were about to leave, Mira held Christopher's mother's hand, looking very natural, as if she were her own mother.
I hated that feeling, absolutely hated it.
From the moment we got in the car, Mira kept chattering non-stop, talking about past events and jokes that only she and Christopher shared, making everyone in the car laugh. Only I felt like an outsider.
No, I was like a driver who couldn't join the conversation, could only listen silently.
Damn it!
Damn Christopher, drop dead! Drop dead!
I treated the gas pedal like Christopher, wanting to stomp him to death.
Fortunately, it wasn't far, and we arrived soon.
At the table, Christopher formally introduced them to me.
His mother was named Aria Clark, a name that sounded very young and distinctive. I remembered it right away.
His brother was Ryan Taylor, his sister was Emma Taylor.
Then there was Mira. She was the daughter of Aria's friend, grew up with him since childhood, and they had a very close relationship.
Hearing this, my sense of crisis grew even stronger.
I suppressed the strange feeling and got up to go to the bathroom after the introductions. Christopher followed me.
At the corner, he pulled me aside and asked with concern, "What's wrong? You haven't said a word since we got in the car. Are you feeling unwell?"
At least he could tell I was unwell, so he wasn't completely stupid.
I looked at him carefully. "Who is she?"
Christopher looked stunned. "Why do you look at her like she's your mortal enemy? What's wrong?"
"I'm asking you who she is!"
My voice grew colder, with a hint of jealousy that even I didn't notice.
"Didn't I say she's a good friend?"
Christopher's eyes rolled, and that familiar wicked smile appeared. "Babe, are you jealous?"
"I thought you'd be indifferent, but you're actually jealous. Have you realized you can't keep pretending? Have you realized your heart is full of me? Have you realized..."
