Chapter 7: Betrayal in the Snow

Again, the snow had started falling, at first softly and gently, putting a white cover on the whole world. Now, the chapel where they had conversed in taut murmurs was eerily quiet, interrupted only by howling gusts of wind from broken windows. The weight of the situation was slowly pressing down onto Holly's chest. The chest was still there in her hands, cold and unyielding. All of these elements-the cryptic warnings, the haunting presence of the strangers, and the mystery surrounding Victor Noel-were coming together in a way that was becoming increasingly ominous.

Clara, still standing just behind Holly, was as pale as a ghost, her eyes darting between the chest and the door. "You don't know what you're doing," she whispered, almost pleading. "The moment you open that chest; you invite everything into the light. You can't control it."

But Holly felt the heartbeat of urgency rising inside her, and she did not hear Clara anymore. The man—the elusive antiques dealer to Victor—hadn't planted much of a seed, for the truth was Holly had all but determined her course of action. It didn't matter what it would cost; somehow, she would dig up the truth. She would face whatever it was Victor so strenuously wanted no one to see.

"Clara, I can't go back now," Holly said, her voice steady. "We've come too far. I have to know what's inside."

Clara's face crumpled as if Holly's words had hit her like a physical blow. She stepped back, her breath shaky. "I tried to warn you," she said softly, almost to herself, before turning and walking towards the door. "You've made your choice."

Holly watched Clara leave, a lump forming in her throat. She didn’t know if Clara was afraid for them, or if there was something deeper she wasn’t saying. But for now, Holly had to trust her instincts.

She turned to Nick. His face was unreadable, his usual confidence replaced by a quiet determination. He nodded once, confirming what they both already knew: they were in this together.

Ready?" he whispered, his voice low.

Holly did not answer him right away. She gazed down at the chest, looking at its intricate snowflake patterns, the dark wood that glimmered faintly in the dim light. It was so ordinary, so deceptively simple. And yet she knew that inside, it held everything. The treasure. The secret. The Christmas legacy.

I guess so," she breathed, her hand shaking as she reached out for the latch.

But before she could unlock it, a loud bang echoed through the chapel, making her jump back in alarm. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly turned toward the entrance, her hand still clutching the chest. The air was thick with tension. Had someone followed them? Had Victor somehow managed to find them before they could open it?

A figure stood silhouetted in the doorway, a tall, imposing shape framed by the snow falling outside. For a moment, Holly thought it might be one of the staff, sent to check on them, but then the figure stepped forward, and the cold light revealed the unmistakable features of Evelyn Noel, Victor's estranged sister.

"Evelyn," Holly said, her voice barely above a whisper. "What are you doing here?"

Evelyn's lips curled into a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Her eyes—dark, calculating—met Holly's with an intensity that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.

"I should be asking you the same thing," Evelyn replied smoothly, her voice thick with an accent that hinted at wealth and privilege. "Why are you so determined to uncover my family's secrets?"

"Secrets?" Holly echoed. "What are you talking about?

Evelyn’s gaze shifted to the chest in Holly’s hands. The smile faded, replaced by a flicker of something darker. “You don’t understand, do you? What you’re holding is not a treasure. It’s a weapon. A curse.”

Holly's grip on the chest tightened, the weight of her decision now clear and pressing down on her. "Then why did you send us all these invitations? Why make it a game? Why not just tell us the truth?

Eveline narrowed her eyes. Moving towards Holly, her heels clicked sharply on the stone floor. "Do you think Victor's mystery was all for the purpose of having fun? You think he is just playing with you? No, Holly. This has never been some kind of game. It's about survival."

Survival? he asked her with his furrowed brow, stepping closer to Holly.

Evelyn’s lips parted, as if she was deciding whether to speak the truth. Finally, she sighed and began to pace, her heels echoing in the silence. “Victor is a fool. He thinks the secret in that chest will save him, but it will only destroy him. And you, too, if you’re not careful.”

The air grew thick with tension as Evelyn paused in front of them. She raised her chin, meeting their eyes with a cold, almost cruel gaze. "The secret isn't just a treasure, you see. It's a legacy of power, a power that could topple entire cities if wielded by the wrong hands."

Holly swallowed, her mind racing. "You're saying the treasure is dangerous?"

Evelyn nodded slowly, her voice steady and devoid of emotion. "Yes. The treasure is a key, Holly. A key to something far more powerful than you can imagine. Something that Victor has been hiding, protecting-locking away for years. If the wrong person opens that chest, if they figure out what it means, they'll have the power to change everything."

Holly's stomach churned. "Change everything?

Evelyn's smile returned, but this time, it was full of bitterness. "Yes. And not in the way you think."

Nick stepped forward, his voice growing more insistent. "What's inside it, Evelyn? What's really in that chest?"

For the first time, Evelyn hesitated. It was a fleeting moment, but Holly saw it—the glimmer of fear in her eyes, the way her hand tightened into a fist at her side.

I can't let you open it," Evelyn finally said, her voice shaking with an emotion Holly couldn't quite place. "Victor may be my brother, but he's a fool. And if you open that chest, he will never be the same. None of us will.

Holly's heart was racing now. The cryptic messages, the warnings, the dangers-all of it was becoming clearer, but still more confusing than ever. What had Victor been protecting? What was this legacy? And why was Evelyn so desperate to stop them?

The silence in the chapel was stifling. Holly glanced at Nick, who seemed to be thinking of what they would do next. "You said you could stop us," Holly said finally, "but you're not even sure what's inside. Are you?

Evelyn's eyes flashed, a dangerous glint of realization dawning in her expression. "I don't need to know. I know the power it holds. I've seen what it can do. And I won't let you unleash it.

Before Holly could say anything, Evelyn lunged forward, her hand grasping the chest. In the sudden movement, Holly's grip faltered, and the chest slipped from her hands. Evelyn tore it open with a violent force that sent the contents spilling out onto the cold stone floor.

The room seemed to hold its breath as a small, ancient key tumbled from the chest, landing with a soft clink. But it wasn't just any key. It was the key from the riddle, the key that matched the snowflake emblem.

Evelyn's breath caught, her face paling as she stared at the key in disbelief. "No." she whispered, her voice trembling.

Holly knelt to pick it up, her fingers shaking as she held the key in her palm. It was cold to the touch, the metal worn smooth by time, yet still impossibly intricate.

“What is this?” Holly whispered, more to herself than to anyone else.

Evelyn took a step back, her eyes wild. “It’s too late now. You’ve opened it.”

And so, everything was changed. Now, the dormant power had become awake-and-there was no way to turn it back.
