Chapter 6: The Cryptic Chapel
Footsteps were getting louder, crunching snow underfoot unmistakable in the cold, silent night. Holly's breath caught in her throat as she turned toward the entrance of the vault, her heart pounding in her chest. Nick, Clara, and Holly exchanged tense glances, each of them aware that they were no longer alone.
"Who could be following us?" Nick asked, his voice low, barely above a whisper.
Holly didn't know. The only thing she knew was that time was running out. They had unearthed so much—the key, the map, the missing star—and yet still, they remained in the dark about who could be orchestrating the whole mystery. What is the treasure? And why have they hidden this for so long?
The footfalls continued moving slowly but persistently closer, second by each passing second.
We can't let anyone stop us," Holly said, her voice firm. She reached for the chest, its weight heavy in significance. Whatever it contained was the key to everything, and they had to get it open.
Nick moved forward too, his fingers tracing the carvings on the chest. But as his hand extended to touch the latch, a shadow crossed the door.
"Don't move."
The voice was unmistakable—cold and commanding. Holly's breath hitched. Standing in the doorway was Clara Frost, her eyes wide with something that wasn't quite fear but certainly not comfort. The footsteps had led her straight to them.
Clara raised a hand. "It's not safe to open that chest."
Holly froze, her hand hovering over the latch. "What do you mean? You were the one who brought us here!"
Clara's eyes wandered nervously, her trembling fingers as if caught in some internal battle. "You have to understand. The treasure… it's not what you think. Opening it might destroy everything."
Nick's eyebrows furrowed. "What are you talking about? We followed the clues. This is the answer, isn't it?"
The older woman’s face darkened, and for a moment, she seemed to age a decade before their eyes. "The treasure is a burden, not a blessing. You’re not the first to come looking for it." She glanced over her shoulder, as if expecting someone to appear from the shadows. "Victor—he knew. He always knew someone would come for it. And now that you’ve found it, there’s no turning back.”
Oh, Victor. What does it have to do with him?"
Clara finally opened her mouth to speak as the sound of footsteps grew a little louder.
The tension built in the air, and this was when she realized they aren't alone inside this vault after all. Not just Clara and her secrets were hidden in it.
Then a figure emerged from the shadows-a tall, thin man with sharp features and dark eyes, gleaming like a cat in the faint light. Holly's heart was pounding when she knew who it was. It was Nick's acquaintance from the party-an antiques dealer who had been keeping himself at arm's length but kept an eye on them all that night.
"What are you doing here?" Nick snapped out, his voice sharp with recognition.
He smirked and curled his lips upwards. "I was just about to ask you the same thing, my friend," he said and took another step forward, his eyes set on Holly. "I see you've found the chest. And I see you're about to make a very big mistake."
His eyes locked onto hers, and Holly's wavered between the two strangers, who one was that man, and why was he following them?
The man didn't give her any time to react. "The treasure is for a legacy owner who has been guarding it century after century. It's not for individuals like you to take. You do not know the dangers. But I do. And you all are marching into something you do not understand."
Clara stiffened and stepped back from the chest. Her face paled. "You don't understand. We're not supposed to open it. It's a warning, a message from the past. If you take that treasure, the curse will befall you all. Just like it did to everyone else."
Holly narrowed her eyes. "Curse? What curse? What is going on here?
The man chuckled softly, the sound dark and bitter. "A curse, indeed. The treasure in that chest is not gold or jewels. It's not a fortune. It's a legacy—Victor's legacy. It's a responsibility, a burden passed down to protect the truth behind Christmas itself."
Nick took a step back. "What truth?"
Clara's face stiffened, as if too painful to utter the words. She glanced down, avoiding their gaze. "A truth that no one should ever discover. A truth that had been buried long, long time ago. Victor… he's trying to stop the wrong people from getting it. He's the only one who can carry the key, who can safeguard it.
The shiver of her spine crept Holly towards saying, "And now you are talking to us that we cannot open it because…"
But then the man stopped him in mid-sentence with a cold, serious tone: "Because it will destroy everything you know about Christmas," he said. "Victor's family has kept that secret for centuries, and now, after all these years, it finally sees the light of day. The treasure… it's the symbol of something much darker than you could ever dream of. And you, Miss Winters, are about to open Pandora's box.
Holly's thoughts whirled around, but one thing became crystal clear: they were in too deep to back out.
She took another step forward and gripped the chest tightly with her hand. "What do you want to protect? What is in the chest, and why does Victor want to hide it?"
The man’s smirk faded, replaced by a coldness in his eyes. “You’ll find out soon enough. But know this—you can never undo what’s been done. You’ve already set the wheels in motion.”
Without another word, he turned and walked toward the door, pausing for just a moment to look back over his shoulder. “You’ll all regret this. It’s too late.”
Holly stood silent, her brain still reeling from the interchange. The weight of the chest was heavier now in her hands. Whatever was in it was more than mere treasure. It was also quite apparent that the people who had been following them, Victor and the antiques dealer, as well as Clara, had all tried to stop the contents from coming out into the open.
Now, she couldn't retreat. She had come too far, and too much was at stake. Yet that question kept eating away at her: what did Victor Noel so desperately want to keep covered up? And what did that say about Christmas-and about her?
As the vault door shut behind them, Holly made her decision.
"We are opening it," she said firmly.
Nick and Clara shared a hesitant glance, but Holly could see they were both just as determined. There was no going back now.
They stood up and faced the chest. The intricate carvings of it seemed to glow in the dim light of the chapel. They had made it this far. Whatever truth lay ahead, it was time to find it.
And as Holly's fingers brushed the chest's latch, she knew—no matter the consequences—there was no stopping them now.
