Chapter 46 The Child Is Gone

Chapter 46 The Child Is Gone

"Emma?" Stanley let out a cold laugh, gripping the steering wheel tighter. "From what I know about Sebastian, if he really loved a woman, how could he possibly hide her away and not give her any status? I've known him for years, and when he looks at Emma, there's never been even a hint of love in his eyes."

He paused, his tone becoming lower, "Given his personality, if he really fell for someone, his methods would only be more aggressive than what we see now. He's keeping Emma around probably just out of some sense of obligation, or... maybe because he hasn't figured out what he really wants yet. Looking at him at the club today, it was obvious that he—"

"Obvious what?" Sophie cut him off coldly, her eyes full of disgust. "Obvious that even without love, he wants to keep someone around to cure his loneliness? Obvious that even with an 'official girlfriend,' he can still randomly find a woman to screw when he's drunk, then humiliate her afterwards?"

To her ears, Stanley's words translated to: Sebastian doesn't love Emma, so he's just using Emma for entertainment.

A surge of anger shot up from the depths of her heart.

"Do you men all think that as long as you don't say 'love,' you can play with other people's feelings and lives with a clear conscience?" Sophie's voice was cold as ice. "Whether Sebastian loves Emma or not is his business. But the fact that he's stringing Emma along while getting tangled up with me just shows his character is completely rotten."

Stanley was stunned, "Sophie, that's not what I meant..."

"Stop the car." Sophie clenched her fists.

"We're not at your place yet—"

"I said stop the car!" She raised her voice, her eyes showing complete resolve.

Stanley had no choice but to pull over. The moment the car slowed down, Sophie pushed open the door and rushed out.

"Here's your clothes!" She yanked off the cashmere sweater and threw it onto the passenger seat, walking away into the morning mist without looking back.

Back at her apartment, the first thing Sophie did was rush into the bathroom.

She rinsed herself with cold water over and over again, as if trying to scrub away all the bad luck and humiliation from her skin.

When she came out of the bathroom, she saw the white medicine bottle Emma had brought sitting on the coffee table.

She picked it up and threw it straight into the trash.

What prenatal vitamins, what good friend—all ridiculous and disgusting jokes.

She sat on the floor, watching the sky gradually brighten outside the window, her emotions surprisingly calm.

Not being pregnant was actually good news.

Since there was no baby at all, that absurd invisible thread between her and Sebastian was completely severed.

She no longer had to second-guess his thoughts for the sake of a non-existent little life, and she no longer had to endure Emma's fake face.

So what if she lost her job? Sophie had carved out a path in Empire City at twenty—how could she possibly be trapped here at twenty-four?

Since Sebastian thought she was unprofessional and that her private life was a mess, she would leave cleanly.

She opened her laptop and started sending out resumes aggressively.

With her qualifications and the connections she'd built at the Carter Group, as long as she avoided the Carter Group's sphere of influence, landing a decent job wouldn't be difficult. She could still be that capable Sophie.

While she was busy revising her resume, her phone suddenly vibrated. It was Mireille.

Sophie hesitated for a moment, then answered.

"Hey, Sophie!" On the other end, Mireille's voice was very low but clearly nervous and excited. "How are you? Samuel told me you went to see that 'bastard' last night? What happened, did he own up to it?"

Sophie's hand on the mouse stopped, her tone as calm as if telling someone else's story, "Mireille, don't bring it up anymore. The baby's gone."

"...What?!" Mireille screamed, and there was a sound of something crashing to the floor on her end. "Gone? How could it be gone? Did that bastard Sebastian force you? Or was it that woman Emma—"

"No, it was my own body's problem." Sophie didn't plan to explain that ridiculous misunderstanding—explaining would only make her look more pathetic. "Anyway, I've already resigned, the baby's gone, and I'm planning to start over."

"Sophie, don't scare me!" Mireille's voice was trembling. "Where are you now? Don't move, I'm coming right over! A miscarriage is serious, you need to rest properly. Wait for me, I'll grab some groceries and come cook for you—"

"Mireille, you don't need to—"

The line went dead.

Sophie sighed.

Looking at the cold lines of text on her computer screen, she suddenly felt that this absurd farce really should end.

As for Sebastian, let him stay trapped in his lies with his Emma.

After hanging up, Mireille was nearly hysterical with worry.

Sophie had finally gotten pregnant, how could the baby just be gone? And she was fired by that bastard Sebastian! The more she thought about it, the angrier she got, but she was still away on a business trip and couldn't get back.

She paced around her room, when a thought suddenly flashed through her mind.

Although Emma's words last time had made her uncomfortable, this time Emma had reached out first, even saying she'd cook for Sophie, seeming genuinely wanting to make amends.

And she was local right now, not far from Sophie's apartment.

Mireille dialed Emma's number.

"Emma, it's me." Mireille choked up, telling Emma about Sophie's "miscarriage" in broken sentences. "Sophie... the baby's gone, and she was fired by Sebastian! I can't get back, can you go check on her? She must be devastated right now..."

On the other end, when Emma heard "the baby's gone," she nearly dropped what she was holding.

Overwhelming joy almost instantly rushed to her head, and she almost cried out right there—the baby was gone! Really gone!

She struggled to suppress the euphoria in her heart, deliberately making her voice shake, sounding even more distraught than Mireille, "What? The baby's gone? How did this happen? How is Sophie... how is she now?"

"I don't know either. She sounded very calm on the phone, but that makes me even more worried." Mireille said through tears. "Emma, please go check on her. She definitely needs someone with her right now."

"Okay, I'll go right away!" Emma immediately agreed, then asked as if casually, "By the way, Mireille, do you know how Mr. Carter is doing? Sophie was fired, he can't possibly have no reaction at all, right?"

Mireille sobbed, "I don't know, I only know Sophie was really upset with him."
