Chapter 185
Chapter 185
William knelt on one knee beside the bed, holding Emily's hand, his eyes serious and solemn.
"I promise you, for the rest of my life, I will love Emily with all my heart and protect her. I won't let her suffer any grievance or shed a single tear. I'll do my best to give her the best life, to give her my complete love. From now on, her happiness is my happiness, her pain is my pain. I'm willing to swear to heaven that I will never let Emily down in this lifetime."
His voice was deep and powerful, each word like a promise carved into his bones.
Emily sat beside them, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably.
It wasn't that she hadn't heard William say sweet things before, but these words didn't sound cheesy at all—they just filled her with overwhelming emotion and peace of mind.
Watching William, Amelia's eyes also reddened.
"Well," she nodded repeatedly, her voice choked with emotion. "With these words from you, I can rest easy."
She firmly placed their hands together.
"Emily, I can see William is a good man. Hope you be happy together, and when I'm better, I'll come back home to attend your wedding."
She smiled, looking at Emily with eyes full of love.
Emily threw herself into Amelia's arms, crying like a child.
Amelia gently patted her back, just like when she used to coax her to sleep as a child, each pat gentle yet firm.
"Alright, stop crying. It's not like I'm never coming back. You two should go home—the child is still waiting for you. I have doctors and nurses taking care of me here, so don't worry."
Amelia smiled as she spoke, though her reddened eyes revealed the turmoil in her heart.
Emily pulled away from Amelia's embrace, wiped her tears, and after a few more words of concern, reluctantly got up to leave.
William also stood up and said solemnly to Amelia.
"Please focus on your treatment. Leave everything at home to me. When you're better, I'll personally come to bring you home."
"Good!"
Amelia nodded, watching the two of them leave, her eyes full of comfort.
On the plane, Emily leaned against the window, looking at the endless expanse of clouds outside, finally feeling relaxed.
So much had happened these past few days that she hadn't had time to catch her breath.
Now, sitting on the plane heading home, she felt that everything was behind her and things were moving in a good direction.
Looking at the view outside, Emily's lips curved unconsciously into a faint smile.
William sat beside her, watching her profile, watching the scenery reflected in her eyes, and suddenly felt a surge of strong emotion.
He had never told Emily that he loved watching her when she was focused—whether she was working seriously, playing with the children, or like right now.
Her focused expression always made his heart flutter.
"Is it beautiful?" William asked softly.
Emily nodded and pointed to a cloud in the distance. "Look, doesn't that cloud look like a big rabbit?"
William looked in the direction she was pointing and indeed saw a cloud shaped exactly like a rabbit with its ears standing up.
"It does!"
William said this while keeping his eyes on Emily. She didn't notice, still excitedly observing the sea of clouds outside.
He spoke thoughtfully, his voice gentle.
"I used to be afraid to look out the window when flying, because I thought such beautiful things would be gone if I looked at them too much."
Hearing this, William's heart clenched.
He knew what Emily meant. Life had been too hard before, and she didn't dare hope that beautiful things could last, so she didn't even dare to look at them much.
He held Emily's hand, their fingers intertwined.
"Not anymore. You can look as many times as you want. I'll be with you, watching for a lifetime."
Emily turned to look at him, her eyes slightly red, but she smiled.
"William, why are you being so cheesy today?"
Facing her teasing question, William answered seriously.
"Because you deserve it."
Emily turned her head away, her ears turning red, unable to suppress the smile on her face.
After the plane landed, the two walked out of the airport.
Soon after, William's phone rang. It was his assistant calling.
"Mr. Brown, everything for the proposal is ready—the venue, flowers, and ring are all prepared according to your requirements. When would you like to—"
"Cancel it!"
William cut him off directly.
The assistant on the other end was clearly stunned.
"Mr. Brown?"
William didn't acknowledge his surprise and calmly repeated.
"I said cancel it. Plans have changed. Start over."
The assistant sounded troubled.
"The venue is already set up, the flowers were flown in, and the ring—"
Again, he couldn't finish his sentence before William interrupted.
"Then tear it down, throw out the flowers, keep the venue but change it. Not outdoors—indoors, preferably somewhere with a view of the clouds."
The assistant was silent for a few seconds, seemingly digesting this sudden change.
"Mr. Brown, may I ask why?"
William didn't hide anything. When mentioning Emily, his voice carried a tenderness he himself didn't notice.
"She was very happy watching the sea of clouds on the plane. I think she'd like to be proposed to with clouds in the background."
Another silence on the other end. The assistant was probably going crazy inside.
Just because she looked at the clouds a few times on the plane, he had to completely scrap a plan that took half a month to prepare. But he didn't dare say it.
"Alright."
"Mr. Brown, I understand. I'll rearrange everything immediately."
The assistant's voice was calm, though with a hint of resignation.
"Thanks. Double your bonus this month."
William hung up.
When Emily came out of the restroom, she saw William standing at the exit and casually asked.
"Who was that?"
"Work stuff."
William took her hand without missing a beat.
"Let's go home."
Meanwhile, after hanging up, the assistant looked at the dense list of tasks on his phone screen, took a deep breath, and sent a message to the work group.
"Everyone attention: Mr. Brown says scrap the entire proposal plan and start over. Change venue to indoors with cloud view. Reorder flowers, keep the ring. Overtime tonight, everyone must be there."
The message immediately caused chaos in the group.
"What? Start over again?! This is already the third version!!!"
"What exactly does Mr. Brown want? I'm going to go bald..."
"I'm dying here."
Seeing the complaints in the group, the assistant pulled at the corner of his mouth helplessly.
"Calm down. Mr. Brown wants an indoor venue where you can see the clouds. Think about where would work?"
"Observation restaurant?"
"Mountaintop hotel?"
"That could work, I'll contact them right away."
"What about the flowers? We ordered red roses before, same thing?"
"Change to white. Mr. Brown mentioned Ms. Johnson likes white roses."
"What about the ring?"
"Keep the ring. Mr. Brown designed it himself—we can change anything but not the ring."
"Everyone hang in there. Once we get through this, we'll be brothers for life."
Looking at the lively chat, the assistant sighed helplessly.
But thinking about the doubled bonus William mentioned, he figured he could push through a bit more.
