Chapter 155 Without You, I Might Lose Scarlett
Daniel thought Scarlett was anxious to contact Sarah, so he leaned over and took Scarlett's phone out from the bedside table.
After Scarlett turned on the phone, she excitedly opened a voice recording and said to Daniel.
"Lie down, quick." Scarlett urged.
Daniel didn't know what she was up to. He raised an eyebrow and indulgently lay down on the hospital bed.
"Close your eyes, I want you to listen to something."
Daniel obediently closed his eyes with a slight smile at the corners.
Scarlett lay down beside him. She took Daniel's large hand and placed it on her belly.
Then she opened the encrypted audio file and closed her eyes too.
A sound like a little train suddenly filled their ears. Scarlett held Daniel's hand and said with a smile.
"Honey, can you hear it? This is Bunny's heartbeat."
Last time Jenny accompanied Scarlett to her prenatal checkup, Jenny had helped record this fetal heartbeat audio.
Scarlett had kept it on her phone all along, opening it to listen from time to time.
She couldn't wait to share it with Daniel now, to tell him that their Bunny was very healthy, that he was really about to come into this world and meet them.
Daniel listened to the sound, not understanding what it was at first.
When he heard Scarlett say it was the baby's heartbeat, his large hand resting on her belly trembled slightly.
Daniel felt a bit at a loss, worried about pressing on her stomach.
A magical feeling struck his heart, making his emotions surge. His Adam's apple bobbed, and he couldn't speak for a long time.
He said silently in his heart.
Bunny, you're such a thoughtful good child. When you're born, I'll definitely treat you well.
Without you, I might have lost Scarlett.
"Daniel? Daniel, don't you have anything to say?"
After a long silence from Daniel, Scarlett opened her eyes.
The audio had finished playing, but Daniel was still lying there motionless, his face seemingly calm.
Scarlett even suspected he had fallen asleep. She called out to him somewhat angrily and pushed him.
Only then did Daniel open his eyes. "Is he driving a train in your belly?"
Scarlett fell silent.
The first time she heard the heartbeat, she had cried with emotion. How could Daniel react like this!
She huffed softly, "Don't you have anything better to say?"
Daniel's lips curved slightly as he moved closer to Scarlett. "You just called me honey. Be good, say it again."
Scarlett froze for a moment, then her cheeks flushed red.
How was his focus always so strange!
She glared at Daniel with feigned annoyance and stubbornly said, "Did I? You heard wrong."
Just now they had snuggled together, listening to Bunny's heartbeat.
Their hands together caressing Bunny - that feeling was happy and fulfilling, like a family of three together.
Caught up in the moment, she had called out without thinking.
Now with Daniel's deep eyes teasingly staring at her, Scarlett felt too embarrassed to say it again.
But Daniel wouldn't let her off. He leaned in closer.
"If you don't say it, I'll kiss you."
Scarlett's face burned hot. A mischievous glint flashed in her bright eyes as she lifted her head and pressed her lips to his first.
Daniel froze, then his breathing became unsteady as he took control and deepened the kiss.
They kissed each other passionately in the warm winter sunlight. Scarlett closed her eyes - she had never felt as close to him as in this moment.
She felt their hearts drawing near too. She thought it didn't matter if Daniel didn't love her now - sooner or later he would love her as much as she loved him.
Even if he loved her a little less, that would be okay.
But Scarlett forgot that things don't always go as planned, rarely sailing smoothly.
Daniel was injured after all, and hadn't slept all night. After kissing for a while, Scarlett pushed him away and urged him to rest.
He tightened his arms and quickly fell asleep, but didn't let go of Scarlett.
Scarlett waited until he was completely asleep before gently separating his arms and getting down from the bed.
She bent down and gently lifted Daniel's hospital gown, seeing the thick bandages wrapped around his waist and abdomen. Her eyes welled up with tears.
Though she couldn't see his wound, with so many bandages, he must have been seriously injured.
Daniel, like Elliot, had a rare blood type. Having lost so much blood, he probably hadn't received a transfusion in time.
His complexion was actually quite poor, even his lips had lost color.
Scarlett kissed Daniel's cheek tenderly before quietly leaving the room.
Sarah must be worried sick. Scarlett needed to contact Sarah right away.
Scarlett went downstairs and made the call.
Sarah answered anxiously: "Scarlett, are you okay? Daniel didn't do anything to you, did he?"
Sarah had been worried sick. That day when Daniel found out Scarlett was pregnant, he had left with a terrifying aura.
After that, Sarah couldn't reach Scarlett, only knowing that Daniel had taken her back.
Sarah had asked Alton to help find out information. That jerk Alton, worthy of being Daniel's good friend, was just as much of a jerk.
Alton had actually used this to boss her around for two days, and hadn't found out any useful information - totally useless.
Sarah even wondered if Alton and Daniel were really good friends.
"Sarah, I'm fine..."
Scarlett briefly told Sarah what had happened over the past two days. Sarah also mentioned running into Daniel with Jenny that day.
Only then did Scarlett understand what had happened. She asked worriedly.
"He didn't give you trouble, did he? Is Jenny okay?"
"Daniel was in such a hurry to chase after you, he didn't have time for us. Jenny was a bit shaken up, but she's fine."
Scarlett felt very sorry. "Sarah, contact Jenny for me. I'll take her to dinner to apologize."
Sarah agreed readily. Worried about Scarlett, they arranged to meet at a café near the hospital.
Scarlett hung up. As she looked up, she saw three figures that looked somewhat familiar, like mummies.
She thought of mummies because all three had their heads and faces wrapped in white gauze, with only their eyes showing.
If it were just one person, walking around the hospital like that would be fine - after all, hospitals have all kinds of patients.
But three patients like this walking together was too eye-catching, and had an indescribable comic quality.
Just as Scarlett was feeling bad about her lack of empathy, they seemed to sense her gaze and turned to look at her one after another.
Through the wrapped bandages, three pairs of uncomfortable eyes were revealed. Scarlett's eyes widened in shock.
It was Natalia, Marc, and Susan.
How did they end up like this?
While shocked, Scarlett was also on guard. She stood up and instinctively observed her surroundings.
She wasn't alone anymore - she was a mother now and had to protect Bunny.
Scarlett knew all too well how difficult Natalia and the others could be.
But the three of them just glared at Scarlett viciously from a distance before turning and running away.
Scarlett was puzzled.
She found it strange, but didn't think much of it. When she arrived at the café, Sarah hadn't arrived yet.
As Scarlett pushed open the café door, she heard two familiar voices.
"If it weren't for that damned fake socialite Scarlett stealing Daniel away, Alice would already be part of my family." It was Juno.
Laura chimed in: "Mr. Wilson even gave Alice a small planet - something money can't buy. The paperwork is incredibly complicated."
"Right, I know about that too. Naming a small planet is international and permanent. Even after decades, even a hundred years, that star will still be unique and unchangeable. Mr. Wilson is so romantic, really unexpected."
"Scarlett stole Alice's socialite status and that wasn't enough - she also schemed to steal the marriage that belonged to Alice. How can there be such a shameless woman as Scarlett? If it weren't for Scarlett, Alice and Mr. Wilson love each other so much, they would have been together long ago."
