Chapter 308 Please Stop Talking
Chapter 308 Please Stop Talking
Daniel's whole body stiffened. Looking at Scarlett's face full of doubt and mockery, he felt so angry his vision darkened.
"I won't!"
How could he possibly cover for the person who killed his wife and child?
But Scarlett just sneered coldly. She shook her head, no longer believing him.
"Haven't you done exactly that before? Alice caused so much trouble, but once Waverly shed a few tears, you kept Alice's child.
Ella did so many bad things, but one phone call from Waverly and you backed down. Daniel, if you hadn't gone that night, maybe, maybe John wouldn't have had the chance."
Alice had harmed Scarlett time and again, ruined Scarlett and Daniel's wedding, caused years of misunderstanding between them, and made Sarah crack her head open at the wedding.
Daniel had clearly said he would terminate the pregnancy and send Alice to prison, but what happened in the end?
And these past few days, Daniel often stood guard downstairs at Radiant Grove late at night, sometimes staying for a while, sometimes until dawn.
Scarlett actually knew about it. She couldn't help thinking, if Daniel hadn't covered for Alice back then, if Daniel hadn't gone to the suburbs that night.
If he had stayed downstairs, would Bunny still be okay?
"Daniel, Bunny is gone. I'm responsible, and so are you!"
Scarlett stared at Daniel with reddened eyes. She wanted to make him feel guilty, to let him know how much pain she was in!
Because she was afraid that when the investigation finally led to the White family, he would show mercy again.
"I know! I've always known I failed to protect you both!"
Daniel raised his hand to touch Scarlett's hateful face, his voice hoarse, his face ashen.
But Scarlett suddenly grabbed Daniel's hand that was touching her brow, and pressed it firmly against her abdomen.
"No! You don't know! You don't know what a good and smart baby Bunny was. From the moment he came, he couldn't bear to trouble me, his mother. The morning sickness in early pregnancy only happened a few times, telling me he had arrived, and then he couldn't bear to make me suffer anymore.
I didn't get prenatal checkups on time, but he still grew up healthy, never making me worry. When I was sad, he would feel upset too, keeping me company in his own way.
After he started moving, every time I called him, he would respond. He was very musical too. When I played prenatal music recently, he was already kicking along with the rhythm..."
As Scarlett said these things, there was a gentle smile on her face, but tears silently rolled down drop by drop.
Daniel's large hand, which she had pressed against her abdomen, broke out in cold sweat and trembled slightly.
His voice was strained, "Scarlett, please stop talking."
"Why shouldn't I? Bunny really liked you, his father. That time you went to Aquilonia, I didn't sleep well for several nights. The little one sensed you and was reminding me. And a few days ago, when you drove downstairs and kept watch, Bunny was especially well-behaved at night..."
Daniel's breathing became heavy, his heart seeming to be torn into bloody pieces by her words.
He suddenly shouted, "Scarlett! I told you to stop!"
He suddenly pulled his hand from her lower abdomen and pulled her into his arms, pressing against her hair.
"You really don't need to say anymore."
He closed his eyes in deep pain, already filled with regret.
He wasn't annoyed by her deliberate reminders, but rather, each time she emphasized these things to him.
She was hurting and grieving herself over and over again. It was too harmful to her health.
She probably didn't know her body had been trembling all along.
But Daniel's rebuke suddenly made Scarlett's emotions explode.
No matter how tightly he held her, it couldn't stop her frantic struggling and screaming.
She clutched at his collar, demanding answers.
"Daniel, where is Bunny's ultrasound picture? Where did you put it? Daniel, do you dare to look at it again? Do you dare?"
Scarlett's voice became more and more shrill. She tore at Daniel's clothes, frantically hitting him.
Her voice alarmed the private doctor outside, and the door was pushed open.
Daniel held Scarlett tightly and said to the doctor, "She's losing control!"
Daniel was worried that if Scarlett continued like this, she would hurt herself.
The doctor quickly came forward and gave Scarlett a sedative injection.
Scarlett soon became weak all over, as if the world had been forcibly put on pause. She collapsed limply in Daniel's arms.
"Scarlett, I will avenge our Bunny. I promise."
He bent down to lay her on the bed, gently arranging her disheveled hair, his voice sounding like it was coming from beyond the clouds.
But Scarlett couldn't feel any trust. Her eyes stared emptily at the ceiling.
He had promised her too much. Could she still believe him?
"Scarlett, don't do this anymore. Bunny was so good, he wouldn't want to see his beloved mother suffering like this because of him, torturing herself. He wouldn't want to see you and me tearing each other apart over him either."
Was that true?
No, these were all excuses.
She wanted to struggle, but her consciousness was becoming more and more drowsy. Before sinking into darkness, she finally looked at him.
Her lips moved slightly, her voice very soft.
But Daniel could make out what she was saying.
"Daniel, I will never forgive you again."
Scarlett closed her eyes, and a tear slid down her pale cheek into her hair.
The doctor and nurse had already left. Daniel sat alone by the bed for a very long time.
When he came out of the bedroom and returned to the study, he sat down behind the desk and slowly took out the neatly folded ultrasound picture from his inner jacket pocket.
The four corners of the paper were already slightly frayed from handling. During this time, this ultrasound picture had always been kept close to his body.
He would often open it to look at it, and each time he saw it, his fatigue would disappear.
However, after Bunny's accident, Daniel never opened it again.
Scarlett was right—he didn't dare look at it anymore.
He, Daniel, actually had something he was afraid of. He had even lost the courage to open this piece of paper.
"Mr. Wilson."
A knock on the door, accompanied by Ray's voice.
Daniel had instantly composed himself and opened a drawer to put the ultrasound picture inside.
"Speak."
Ray stepped forward and placed a file on the desk.
"We found the fake nurse who used the phone at the nurses' station. It's this person. From the body shape and posture, we can basically determine it's a short, thin man. He should be the same contact person who provided money to John twice. We've also found where he was staying, but the place is already empty. It will take some time to find him..."
As Ray spoke, he handed over another set of screenshots from the residential complex surveillance and dashcam footage.
"A small signal jammer was indeed placed in the car. We checked everyone who approached the vehicle. We've now confirmed it was this old man. He apparently took advantage of a child falling near the car and stuck the jammer under the car while helping the child up.
Zaid got out to check at the time, but because the old man was with a two or three-year-old child, and he had seen the old man with kids in the complex before, he let his guard down."
"Have you found him?" Daniel picked up the papers and glanced at them.
But Ray said, "He's an elderly relative from one of the residential households. We found out he failed in an investment and owed a huge debt. The evening before Ms. Lewis's accident, he had already flown to Sylvanor. We've sent people to track him down."
Daniel's face darkened to the extreme.
Clearly, the person behind this was very cautious and careful, having prepared countermeasures long ago.
