Chapter 91 91
"It is time to turn off the heart machine and see." Brooke instructed. She has just finished sewing the new heart into place. After ensuring each blood vessel and arteries were well attached and not leaking.
Brooke monitored the heart beat, seeing how many times it beats per second. The consistency of the heart beat. When she was sure everything was normal, she instructed. "Everything looks good. Now we can close up the chest.”
It's been five hours and Brooke is going on with her work in the operating room two. She is attending to the patient with caution and expertise. Her assistants were playing their part well.
There are a lot of things to consider when carrying out this kind of operation. First, you have to match the heart of the recipient. Then the size of the heart too, compared to the body size of the recipient. That and other things too are to be considered before deciding which patient gets the heart.
After they were done with sewing up the chest, Brooke announced. "Good job everyone."
The nurses and the assisting doctor applauded.
"Weldon, Doctor Bee."
"Great Job, Doctor Bee."
"We are so proud of you, Doctor Bee."
The people in the room kept praising.
"Thank you for making me part of your team, Doctor Bee." Said the doctor that replaced Doctor Minal in assisting Brooke for the transplant.
When Brooke stepped out of the operating room, the family of the patient surrounded her. She also shared the good news with them and they could not contain their happiness. They thanked Brooke and praised her.
"Your daughter now has a new healthy heart. But there is still more to be done. Her cardiologist and I will monitor her condition and see how well she is doing with the new heart." Brooke explained.
"Thank you, Doctor Bee. You saved our daughter for us. We will forever be indebted to you."
"Thank you doctor. You are a lifesaver."
"You really are a superhero."
The family members kept praising her. Most of them were in tears.
Brooke soon left the family and walked to the elevator. She wanted to get some rest in her office before leaving.
After a few hours of rest, she decided to leave the hospital. From there, she has to go to the hotel and pick Liam up. But she had to call Nathan first to let him know she was on her way.
She was about to dial his number while she was at the parking lot. To her surprise, she saw Nathan and another man walking towards her. She recognised the man as the one she operated on him, a week ago. The same man his wife asked Brooke after Nathan. About the job offer he gave them the other day. She put her phone down.
"I was about to call you and let you know I was on my way to pick up Liam. What are you doing here this early?" Brooke asked.
"Good morning, Bee. We were waiting for your arrival. Do you remember Matteo Ralph, right?" Nathan said, pointing at the man beside him. "He will be your bodyguard from now on."
"Good morning, Doctor Bee. I never got the chance to thank you for saving my life." Matteo said. "You are a good Doctor. Thank you for saving my life." He added.
Brooke gave him a small smile. "I am glad I could help." She then turned to Nathan.
"Why do I need a bodyguard?" She asked him, a bit confused at the moment. Wondering why she would need one.
"Bee, I told you that the motorcyclist was aiming for you. He has been waiting for you to show up at the parking lot for hours. When you came out, that was when he started his motorbike and aimed at you." Nathan explained. "Your driver and Matteo will be your constant companion for now. I will hire more bodyguards to keep an eye on you and Liam."
The way she sees Nathan being too serious about it, she didn't say much. They soon got into the car and then, he showed her the video.
Brooke went pale, seeing the scene before her. It was clear that the motorcyclist actually just sat there for hours waiting for her. If not for Nathan that saved her, she would have been the one with the injuries.
"Why would someone want to hurt me on purpose?" Brooke asked with a sad voice. She doesn't think she has given anyone any reason to want to harm her.
"That is what I would also like to know." Nathan said with a serious note in his voice. "Have you made enemies? Is there anyone you could think of that might want to hurt you?" He asked. "Just think carefully."
Brooke was quiet for a while, trying to think of whether she has offended anyone in any way. Whether mistakenly or intentionally.
After some time, she shook her head. "None that I know. I don't think I have offended anyone to the extent that they try to hurt me that way - wait.... wait... Wait." she stopped herself. Recalling something strange that happened some days ago in her office.
"There was this case about a patient who needed a heart transplant. A man came to my office trying to convince me to bring the patient's name up on the list but I told him it was not possible. Because there are patients who came before her and are in more critical condition than her. He did not take it well." Brooke explained.
"He even went ahead to threaten me, saying I wouldn't want to mess with the West. That is the only one I can think of." She added, looking at Nathan, who also gave her his attention.
"Who?" Nathan asked, his voice evident with anger.
"David Mark. That was his name." Brooke said. "But he seems to be a representative of the patient. Her name is Gladys West. They seemed to be a family with influence in Emberwood but I don't know much about them."
Nathan listened attentively. He nodded continuously at Brooke's words. "I will look into it." He said.
