Chapter 89 89
"You don't look ok as you have claimed, Nathan. Look at this bruise. It is too huge to not feel any pain there." Brooke said, looking at the big round bruise on Nathan's shoulder.
"It doesn't hurt that much, Bee. I am fine. The good thing was that I was able to protect my head. That would have been the issue if I did not." Nathan answered. "Though one of my arms hurts. I might have hit it while trying to protect my head."
He is lying on a hospital bed while Brooke tries to examine him. He has a cut on his forehead, which she has cleaned and covers it neatly.
Brooke turned to one of the nurses there and instructed, "Put him through a CT scan. I want to be sure that everything is fine."
"Yes, doctor." The nurse answered.
After the incident, some security guards of the hospital went after him. But they were not able to get to the motorcyclist. He escaped.
Nathan was quickly taken to the emergency room to check his condition. They wanted to make sure he did have an internal injury. He tried to stop Brooke, insisting he was fine. But Brooke wouldn't hear any of it. She had to make sure. After all, he saved her life by pushing her out of the way.
Nathan got up, holding his hand. "Bee, I don't think that is necessary. I feel fine. All I need to do now is to go to the security to see what has happened. I am sure the motorcyclist was aiming for you."
"That is not what is important right now. I have to make sure you are fine. Would you please think of your own health and yourself for once?" Brooke scolded. "Don't be a stubborn patient and listen to what your doctor says." She then turned to the nurse and repeated "Put him through CT scan. Now."
Nathan sighed. He could clearly see Brooke had put on her professional mask. There was no room to argue any further. At the same time, her reaction made him feel there is a little place for him in her heart. Her action, since he got hit, has been nothing but caring. He got up from the bed and sat on the wheelchair that the nurse had wheeled closer to the bed.
"At least, it's good to know that you still care, Bee." Nathan said after settling on the wheelchair. He was taken to the radiology room.
Brooke did not respond to that. Instead, she left for her office. Realizing she had forgotten her personal phone earlier when she left with Nathan. To her surprise, she saw her office door slightly open. She recalled telling her assistant to lock the office. Maybe she has forgotten.
But when she walked in she saw one of her colleagues answering her office phone.
"Yes, the next patient in waiting is Gladis-" the doctor stopped mid sentence. She couldn't hide her shocked expression when she saw Brooke walk in.
"Doctor Bee, you are alright- I mean..... You are here." The doctor said nervously. "I thought you left already."
"Why wouldn't I be? This is my office and no. What are you doing here?" Brooke asked, utterly confused.
"Oh! Right. I was just passing by and I heard your office phone ringing. Seeing the office empty, I came in to answer it." The doctor explained.
"Who is calling?" Brooke asked.
"It's the organ center. They have a heart ready for our next patient." She reported.
"Oh mine. What didn't you say so." Brooke said while she quickly took the phone from her colleague and answered the call. She was given the necessary details. immediately, Brooke knew who was on the waiting line and matched the donated heart. The organ center then informed her that they will transport it and the hospital can get it in a few minutes.
Brooke called the family of the next patient. To let them know that they have gotten a heart that matched and if they are going to accept it. They accepted it and would begin the preparation to come to the hospital immediately.
Brooke also began her own preparation. This would be her third heart transplant as a leading doctor in the operation. She had assisted both her father and doctor Patel on several occasions. But led the surgery by herself twice.
Everything was set. She then began to give her assistants instructions before the surgery. They were moving and doing what she was instructing them to do. But she noticed the same doctor she found in her office was not herself. She seems to be absent-minded at that moment.
"Doctor Minal, are you alright? You seem to be not yourself." Brooke asked.
"Um... I. I am not feeling well at the moment, Doctor Bee. I don't think I am in a position to be able to assist you today." Doctor Minal said.
"Oh... Sorry to hear that. You should get some rest then. I will have another doctor to assist in the transplant." Brooke said with concern.
Doctor Minal was quick to leave the operation theater.
"Call Doctor Drake. Tell him he is to come and assist me in the transplant. It's his chance to be part of a transplant for the first time." Brooke instructed one of the nurses.
The nurse nodded and went to do as Brooke instructed.
After that, Brooke then left the theater room. She went back to the emergency room to check on Nathan. She was glad to see he was out of danger. "Thank goodness. I am glad you are ok." Brooke said.
"No... I should be the one saying that. I am glad you are alright." Nathan said back. "Bee, that motorcyclist was aiming at you." He added.
"Why do you keep saying that?" Brooke asked. At first, she kept ignoring it, thinking he was just in pain. Even though he looked and acted calm all the while. But now, he looked serious while saying it.
"I know what I saw. I am sure he was. And I would like to know why." Nathan said in a serious tone.
"Why would anyone want to harm you?"
