Chapter 63

Chapter 63
I woke up early, feeling a sense of nervous energy coursing through my veins. Today was the day of my presentation, and I was determined to nail it. I quickly got dressed in my power suit, my heart racing with anticipation.

As I headed downstairs, I saw my driver, waiting for me by the door. "Good morning, ma'am," he said, with a nod. "I'll get you to the company in no time."

I smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. He was always punctual and professional, and I knew I could count on him to get me to my destination safely and on time.

We walked out to the car, and I was greeted by the sleek, black exterior of my luxury vehicle. I slid into the backseat, feeling the soft leather envelop me in comfort.

As we pulled out of the driveway, I took a deep breath and began reviewing my notes one last time. I was ready for this. I was going to crush it.

He expertly navigated the traffic, and we arrived at the company just as the sun was rising over the skyline. I took a moment to collect my thoughts, then stepped out of the car and onto the pavement.

"Thanks," I said, with a smile. "I'll see you after the presentation."

He nodded and drove off, leaving me to head into the building. I took a deep breath, squared my shoulders, and walked into the lobby. It was showtime.

As I walked into the conference room, I scanned the table and my heart sank. Marco was sitting as one of the board directors, a smug smile spreading across his face. I felt a wave of anger and betrayal wash over me. How could he do this? I thought we had agreed to keep our personal issues out of the company. I know he's here to sabotage me.

I took a deep breath and tried to compose myself, but my mind was racing. This was not good. Marco's presence on the board was a clear conflict of interest, and I knew he would do everything in his power to sabotage my presentation.

I glanced around the room, trying to gauge the reactions of the other board members. Some of them looked surprised to see Marco, while others seemed completely unaware of the tension between us.

I took my seat at the head of the table, trying to project confidence and authority. But inside, I was seething. How could Marco do this to me?

As I began my presentation, I could feel Marco's eyes on me, boring into my skin. I tried to focus on the numbers and data, but I couldn't shake the feeling that he was waiting for me to slip up so he could pounce.

I pushed on, determined to prove myself and show the board that I was the right person for the job. But with Marco sitting there, I knew it was going to be an uphill battle.

I took a deep breath and continued with my presentation, trying to focus on the numbers and data in front of me. But as I spoke, I could feel Marco's eyes on me, boring into my skin. I tried to ignore him, but I could sense his skepticism, his doubt.

As I reached the midpoint of my presentation, Marco spoke up, his voice dripping with condescension. "Mrs Presly, can you explain this discrepancy in the financials?" he asked, his eyes narrowing.

I felt a surge of anxiety, my heart racing. I knew this was a trap, a way for Marco to trip me up. But I tried to remain calm, to think clearly. "Ah, yes," I said, scanning the data. "That's a minor accounting error. It's been resolved."

But Marco wasn't satisfied. "And what about this assumption you made about the market trends?" he pressed on.

I felt my palms growing sweaty, my mind racing. I knew I had done my research, but Marco's questions were making me doubt myself. "I...I based it on industry reports and analysis," I stammered.

Some of the other board members started to chime in, their questions and comments making my anxiety spike. I felt like I was being attacked from all sides, like I was on trial.

I tried to keep my cool, to answer their questions confidently. But inside, I was panicking. What if I failed? What if Marco succeeded in sabotaging me?

As the questioning continued, I felt my breath getting shorter, my heart racing faster. I knew I had to pull it together, to show them I was capable. But Marco's presence was making it hard for me to focus, to think clearly.

I took a deep breath and tried to push on, but my anxiety was getting the better of me. I just wanted this to be over, to get out of this room and away from Marco's piercing gaze.

Marco's laughter cut through the room, a cold, mirthless sound that made my blood run cold. "Mrs Presly, you're not even capable of answering a simple question," he sneered, his eyes gleaming with malice. "You're not fit to be CEO. You would ruin this company."

I felt a sting from his words, a surge of anger and hurt. How dare he question my ability? I've worked tirelessly for this company, poured my heart and soul into it.

"I've done my research, I know what I'm talking about," I shot back, trying to keep my cool.

But Marco just laughed again, his voice dripping with condescension. "You're just making it up as you go along, Mrs Presly. You have no idea what you're doing."

The other board members were starting to nod in agreement, their faces skeptical. I could feel my anxiety spiking, my confidence wavering.

"No, that's not true," I protested, trying to defend myself. But Marco just talked over me, his voice growing louder and more dismissive.

"You're a disaster waiting to happen, Mrs Presly. You would bankrupt this company and destroy everything we've worked for."

I felt a hot wave of anger wash over me, but I knew I had to keep my cool. I couldn't let Marco get to me, no matter how hard he tried. I took a deep breath and tried to speak, but my voice was shaking with rage.

Marco's words cut deep, each one a precision-crafted insult designed to dismantle my confidence. "You're a joke, Mrs Presly. A puppet CEO who can't even run a meeting without stumbling over her own feet."

I felt my face burning with anger and humiliation, but I refused to give Marco the satisfaction of seeing me crack. I straightened my shoulders and tried to meet his gaze, but he just laughed again, his eyes glinting with malice.

"You're a relic of the past, Mrs Presly A reminder of Xavier's poor judgment. You're only here because of your connection to him, not because of any actual talent or ability."

The other board members were starting to look uncomfortable, shifting in their seats and avoiding eye contact. But Marco just kept going, his taunts and insults flowing like a toxic river.

"You're a liability, Mrs Presly. A ticking time bomb waiting to destroy this company. You should be grateful I'm even allowing you to sit in this room with us."

I felt my anger boiling over, my hands clenched into fists beneath the table. How dare he speak to me like this? How dare he question my ability and my worth?

But I knew I had to keep my cool. I couldn't let Marco get under my skin, no matter how hard he tried. I took a deep breath and tried to speak, my voice steady and calm.

"Marco, that's enough. I understand you have concerns, but personal attacks are not necessary or productive."

Marco just laughed again, his eyes glinting with triumph. "Oh, Mrs Presly. You're so weak. You can't even defend yourself against a few simple insults."

I stood up straight, my heart pounding in my chest, and began to answer each question with confidence and poise. I could feel Marco's eyes on me, trying to intimidate me, but I refused to back down.

"I understand that you have concerns about my ability to lead this company," I said, my voice clear and strong. "But I assure you, I have done my research and I am fully prepared to take on this role."

As I answered each question, I could see the surprise on the board members' faces, including Marco's. They had expected me to crumble under the pressure, but I was standing my ground.

"I'd like to address the issue of the company's financials," I said, pulling out a stack of reports and data. "I've done a thorough analysis and I believe I can implement some changes that will increase our revenue and reduce our expenses."

Marco snorted, but I ignored him and continued. "I'd also like to discuss the marketing strategy. I believe we need to take a more innovative approach to reach our target audience."

As I spoke, I could see the board members nodding, taking notes, and whispering to each other. Marco looked increasingly frustrated, but I didn't let that stop me.

"I understand that there may be doubts about my ability to lead," I said, my voice growing stronger. "But I assure you, I am capable and committed to this company's success. I am not a puppet CEO, and I will not be intimidated or bullied."

The room fell silent, and for a moment, I thought I saw a glimmer of respect in Marco's eyes. But then, his expression hardened again, and he sneered at me.

"We'll see about that," he said, his voice dripping with malice.

But I just smiled, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. I had stood up for myself, and I had shown them that I was not to be underestimated.

"I'd like to remind everyone that I am the acting CEO of this company," I said, my voice firm and authoritative. "And I will continue to lead this company with integrity and vision until my husband, Xavier, returns."

I looked around the room, meeting the gaze of each board member, including Marco. "I understand that there may be doubts about my ability to lead, but I assure you, I am fully capable and committed to this company's success."

I felt a surge of confidence and determination as I spoke. I was not going to let Marco or anyone else undermine my authority or question my ability to lead.

"I will not be intimidated or bullied," I continued. "I will make decisions that are in the best interest of this company, and I will take charge of the situation until Xavier returns."

As I spoke, I could see the surprise and respect in the eyes of the board members. They had underestimated me, thinking that I would be a pushover, but I had shown them that I was a force to be reckoned with.

Marco, however, looked furious. His face was red with anger, and his eyes were blazing with resentment. But I didn't back down. I stood my ground, my heart pounding with excitement and my spirit soaring with determination.

"I'm not afraid of you, Marco," I said, my voice steady and calm. "And I'm not going to let you or anyone else undermine my authority especially someone who has embezzled company's funds before. I am the acting CEO, and I will lead this company with strength and vision."

The room fell silent, and for a moment, it seemed like time had stopped. Then, slowly, the board members began to nod, one by one, acknowledging my authority and my leadership.

Marco, however, stormed out of the room, his anger and frustration palpable. But I didn't let that bother me. I knew that I had won a crucial battle, and I was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

I stood up, my heart still racing from the adrenaline of the confrontation. I smoothed out my dress, adjusted my shoulders, and walked out of the room with my head held high. I could feel the eyes of the board members on me, but I didn't look back. I didn't need to. I knew I had made my point.

As I walked out of the conference room, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. I had stood up for myself, and I had shown them that I was not to be underestimated. I was the acting CEO, and I would lead this company with strength and vision.

I walked down the hallway, my heels clicking on the marble floor. I could feel the weight of Marco's gaze on me, but I didn't look back. I knew he was seething with anger and frustration, but I didn't care. I had won.

I reached the door to my office and turned to face the assistant who was waiting for me. "Hold all my calls," I said, my voice firm and authoritative. "I need some time to think."

Sophia nodded and closed the door behind me. I walked over to the window and looked out at the city skyline. I felt a sense of calm wash over me, and I knew that I was ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.

I was Avery, the acting CEO, and I would not be defeated.
