Chapter 50
Chapter 50
"My mother-in-law was standing in front of me, her face red with anger, shouting at the top of her lungs. "WHERE ARE THE CAR KEYS, LILITH? I KNOW YOU TOOK THEM!"
I shook my head, trying to remain calm. "I didn't take the car keys, I swear. I don't know what you're talking about."
But she wouldn't listen. "DON'T LIE TO ME, LILITH! I KNOW YOU'VE BEEN USING THE BENTLEY FOR YOUR OWN PURPOSES. HAND OVER THE KEYS NOW!"
I felt my heart racing, my hands shaking. I didn't know what to do. I had never seen her like this before.
Just as I thought things were about to get out of hand, my father-in-law walked into the room. "What's going on here?" he asked, his voice calm and authoritative.
My mother-in-law turned to him, her anger still evident on her face. "Lilith took the car keys and won't give them back!"
I shook my head, trying to defend myself. "That's not true! I didn't take the car keys. I don't know what she's talking about."
My father-in-law looked at me, then at my mother-in-law. "Let's calm down and talk about this rationally," he said. "Lilith, do you have the car keys?"
I shook my head again. "No, I don't. I swear."
He turned to my mother-in-law. "See, dear. Lilith doesn't have the keys. Maybe we should look elsewhere."
But my mother-in-law was still furious. "I KNOW SHE'S HIDING SOMETHING! SHE'S ALWAYS BEEN A LIAR!"
I felt tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. I couldn't believe what was happening. I had never been accused of something like this before. And by my own family!
I was taken aback when my father-in-law spoke up, his voice firm but calm. "That's enough, dear. You have no right to accuse her of lying. She's told us she doesn't have the keys, and I believe her."
My mother-in-law's face turned red with anger, but my father-in-law continued. "We need to stop jumping to conclusions and start looking at the facts. She has never given us any reason to doubt her honesty."
I was surprised by his defense of me, and my mother-in-law seemed taken aback as well. She took a step back, her eyes narrowing. "How can you take her side?" she spat.
My father-in-law stood firm. "I'm not taking sides, dear. I'm just trying to be reasonable. She is a part of this family, and we need to support each other."
I felt a surge of gratitude towards my father-in-law. No one had ever stood up for me like that before. I was used to being criticized and belittled, but he was defending me.
My mother-in-law huffed and crossed her arms, but my father-in-law continued. "Let's work together to find the keys, shall we? I'm sure they'll turn up eventually."
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. Maybe, just maybe, things would start looking up from here.
My mother-in-law's face turned beet red with anger as she turned on her husband. "How can you take her side?" she yelled, her voice echoing off the walls. "You're always so quick to defend her, no matter what she does!"
My father-in-law stood his ground, his expression calm and firm. "I'm not taking sides, dear. I'm just trying to be fair. She has done nothing wrong and there's no reason why she'll hide the keys."
My mother-in-law's eyes flashed with anger. "Nothing wrong? She's always causing trouble, and you always excuse it!"
I felt a surge of gratitude towards my father-in-law for defending me, but my mother-in-law was having none of it. She turned on him, her voice rising. "You're just like her, always making excuses for her behavior!"
My father-in-law sighed and tried to calm her down. "Dear, please understand..."
But she wasn't having it. "No, I won't understand! You're always taking her side, and it's not fair!" She turned and stormed out of the room, leaving us in an uncomfortable silence.
I felt a pang of guilt for causing tension between my father-in-law and his wife, but he just patted my hand and said, "Don't worry, Lilith. I know you're a good person. We'll get through this."
I was left alone, my head throbbing with a headache. I sat down on my bed, running my hands through my hair in frustration.
Why did this always happen? Why did my mother-in-law always have to pick fights with me?
I lay back on my bed, closing my eyes and trying to will the headache away. But it only seemed to get worse, pounding in my temples like a drum.
I couldn't believe the way my mother-in-law had spoken to me. And in front of my father-in-law, too. It was so humiliating.
Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes as I thought about how much I wanted to just get away from all of this. Away from the constant criticism and belittling.
But where could I go? I was stuck in this marriage, stuck in this family.
I let out a deep sigh and tried to focus on my breathing, hoping to calm my racing thoughts.
But it was no use. The headache only seemed to get worse, and I couldn't shake the feeling of being trapped.
As I lay there, my mind racing with thoughts of my mother-in-law's harsh words, I suddenly remembered something that made my heart skip a beat. Xavier hadn't taken his medication this morning! He was always so meticulous about taking it every day, and I knew how important it was for his health.
I quickly threw off the covers and got out of bed, my headache momentarily forgotten. I rushed to the bathroom and grabbed the medication, shoving it into my pocket.
I didn't hesitate, rushing downstairs and calling out for the driver. "Please, take me to tcompany!" I exclaimed, my heart racing with worry.
The driver looked at me in surprise but quickly nodded and opened the car door for me. I jumped in and we sped off, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios.
What if Xavier had a seizure? What if he was in danger?
I couldn't shake off the feeling of dread as we drove through the traffic, my eyes fixed on the clock on the dashboard.
Please, let me get there in time. Please, let Xavier be okay.
As we arrived at the company, I could see a sense of urgency in the air. Doctors were rushing into the building, and my heart sank. Something was wrong.
I leapt out of the car and rushed into the office, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios. I burst through the door, and my eyes scanned the room frantically.
That's when I saw him. Xavier was sitting in a chair, his face pale and clammy. Doctors were surrounding him, talking in hushed tones.
My heart stopped. "Xavier!" I exclaimed, rushing towards him.
But before I could reach him, one of the doctors turned to me and said, "I'm afraid you need to leave, Mrs. Presley. This is a medical matter."
Xavier's eyes met mine, and he looked away, his voice weak. "Tell her to leave."
My heart broke. He didn't want me there. I felt a stinging sensation in my eyes as tears began to form.
"Please, Xavier, let me stay," I begged, but he just shook his head.
The doctors gently but firmly escorted me out of the room, leaving me in the hallway, feeling helpless and alone.
I handed the medication to the doctor, my hands shaking. "He didn't take it this morning," I said, my voice trembling. "I was supposed to remind him, but we had a fight and I forgot..."
The doctor's expression turned stern. "Mrs. Presleg, this is serious. Not taking his medication as prescribed could have led to serious consequences. Seizures, coma, even death..."
I felt a wave of guilt wash over me. "I know, I'm so sorry. I feel terrible..."
The doctor sighed. "Well, we'll deal with that later. Right now, we need to focus on getting him stable."
I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. "Can I stay? Please?"
The doctor hesitated, then nodded. "You can wait outside. We'll come out and update you as soon as we can."
I nodded and sat down in the chair outside the office, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios. What if he had a seizure? What if he...
I couldn't bear the thought. I buried my face in my hands and waited, praying for the doctors to come out and tell me everything was okay.
I sat there for what felt like an eternity, my mind racing with thoughts of Xavier's condition. Hours ticked by, and I grew more and more anxious. I couldn't bear the thought of losing him.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the doctors emerged from the room. I jumped up, my heart racing.
"Is he...?" I started to ask, but one of the doctors held up a hand.
"He's stable," he said, his expression serious but reassuring. "We were able to get his medication levels back under control, and he's resting now."
I felt a wave of relief wash over me, followed by a flood of tears. "Thank you," I sobbed, my body shaking with emotion.
The doctor nodded sympathetically. "He'll need to stay here for observation, but he should be okay."
I nodded, still trying to process everything. "Can I see him?" I asked, my voice shaking.
The doctor hesitated, then nodded. "For a few minutes, yes. But please, try to stay calm. He needs rest."
I made my way to his room, a spring in my step, but as I reached the door, his personal assistant, blocked my path.
"I'm afraid you can't go in there, ma'am," she said, her expression firm but kind.
I was taken aback. "What do you mean? I just want to check on him, make sure he's okay."
She shook her head. "Xavier needs rest, and the doctor's orders are clear: no visitors till he's perfectly fine."
I pouted, feeling a pang of disappointment. "But I'm his wife! I just want to make sure he's okay."
She sighed. "I understand, ma'am, but you have to respect the doctor's orders. Besides, Sir Xavier needs time to recover, and your presence might disturb him."
I crossed my arms, feeling a bit stubborn. "But I promise I'll be quiet, I just want to sit with him for a bit."
She firmly shook her head. "I'm afraid it's not possible, ma'am. Honestly, Sir Xavier asked me not to let you in specifically."
I huffed, feeling a bit frustrated, but I knew she was just doing her job. I'd have to wait, but I was determined to be by Xavier's side as soon as possible.
I sighed, feeling defeated. My head was aching badly, and the stress of the day was catching up with me. I realized that I wasn't going to win this battle, and Xavier needed rest anyway.
"Fine," I said to her, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'll go home. But please, take care of him for me?"
She nodded, her expression softening. "Of course, ma'am. I'll make sure he's well taken care of. You go take care of yourself too, okay?"
I nodded, feeling a bit drained. I made my way out of the hospital, the cool evening air a welcome relief after the stale hospital atmosphere.
As I settled into the car, I let out a deep sigh. My head was throbbing, and all I wanted to do was go home, crawl into bed, and forget this day ever happened.
The driver, sensing my exhaustion, asked if I wanted to listen to music or just relax. I opted for silence, closing my eyes and letting the darkness wash over me.
The drive home was a blur, my mind wandering to Xavier and how he was doing. I hoped he was comfortable and that the medication was working.
When we arrived at the house, I dragged myself out of the car and stumbled into the bedroom, collapsing onto the bed. I didn't even bother changing out of my clothes, just kicked off my shoes and buried my face in the pillow.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't shake the feeling of worry that lingered in my heart. Xavier was going to be okay, but I knew this was far from over.
