Chapter 69 Honey, Hug Me
"No way! I really missed you! Honey, hug me!" Sophia buried her face into Benjamin's neck, gently nuzzling him. Her voice was soft and sweet, almost too sweet to be real.
Benjamin looked helplessly at Sophia in his arms, then wrapped his arms around her slender waist, pulling her closer.
"Why'd you sleep so long this time?" Benjamin rested his chin on the top of Sophia's fluffy hair, his voice low and raspy.
His eyes reflected the image of Sophia, filled with warmth.
Sophia's eyes darted around mischievously before she lifted her head to look seriously into Benjamin's eyes. "Because you were in my dream. I didn't want to wake up!"
Sophia's clear eyes sparkled with joy, like a beam of light piercing straight into Benjamin's heart.
His Adam's apple bobbed slightly as he asked hoarsely, "If I was in your dream, does that mean the real me isn't important?"
"No way!" Sophia retorted, "I dreamt about my childhood, but for some reason, I can't remember their faces."
Benjamin's gaze sharpened, and his expression grew serious. "Are you talking about the people who did the experiments?"
Sophia nodded and explained, "The last time I was injected was the day we were rescued. I only have a vague impression of everything before that."
Sophia lowered her head, feeling a bit down.
She could clearly recognize Benjamin, so why couldn't she remember the faces of those responsible?
Benjamin looked down, his gaze meeting the top of Sophia's head.
He sighed helplessly, reached out to rub her head, and softly comforted her, "Don't be sad. It's not your fault. When I think back, I can't remember their faces either. Maybe part of our memories were erased?"
Before Sophia mentioned it, Benjamin had always thought his temporary amnesia was due to unconsciousness, causing him to forget those faces.
But now, it seemed that wasn't the case.
Sophia had an exceptional memory; she could recognize him instantly, but couldn't remember those people.
This suggested that someone had deliberately made them forget.
"But how is that possible?" Sophia furrowed her brows, her eyes full of panic.
She had studied medicine with Robert for years and had never encountered such a situation. "Ordinary drugs can't alter a person's memory. How did they do it?"
Benjamin also fell into deep thought.
But there were no clues.
He sighed deeply and said, "Don't think too much about it. You must be hungry after sleeping for so long. Let's get you something to eat."
As soon as he finished speaking, Sophia's stomach growled.
Sophia's face instantly turned bright red, and she quickly covered her stomach with her hands.
Benjamin laughed at her embarrassed reaction.
He lifted Sophia off the bed and carried her out of the room.
With the temptation of food, Sophia quickly forgot about the issue.
But Benjamin felt heavy-hearted and told Preston and Alaric about it that night.
Upon hearing it, Preston and Alaric's expressions changed dramatically.
"Benjamin, are you saying that someone deliberately erased your memories back then? That's not realistic!" Alaric shook his head, his voice full of disbelief. "Making someone lose all their memories might be doable, but losing specific ones? With the tech and medicine we've got now, it's impossible. Especially a decade ago."
Benjamin crossed his legs and leaned back against the sofa. Under the light, his face looked like it was sculpted by a divine hand, making his emotions hard to read.
"It's just a theory. The organization wasn't completely taken down back then. If they resurface, the consequences could be disastrous." His voice was deep, his expression hard to decipher.
Benjamin's usually stoic face now showed signs of concern.
Preston was silent for a moment before addressing Benjamin's worry, "The only survivors of the experiments were you and Sophia. If they really want to come back, the first thing they'll do is check the results."
"Meaning, they could show up around Benjamin and Sophia anytime, even sneak into their lives without anyone noticing?" Alaric's face darkened.
Benjamin sighed, his expression growing colder. "That's my biggest fear. I can handle it, but Sophia is still young and innocent. She's easily hurt."
Upon hearing this, Preston and Alaric fell silent.
Just thinking about Sophia being in constant danger made Benjamin feel like a heavy stone was pressing down on his heart.
"Benjamin, what's your plan?" After a long silence, Preston sighed and asked softly.
"I want to investigate everyone we frequently interact with. The enemy's in the shadows, we're in the light. We need to prevent any harm." Benjamin stood up from the sofa, his deep eyes falling on Preston and Alaric. He said in a low voice, "I'll handle this discreetly. Don't tell Sophia yet; she'll worry."
"Don't worry, Sophia's part of the White Family now. We'll do everything to protect her!" Alaric walked up to Benjamin, patted his shoulder, and then left.
After Alaric left, Preston looked at Benjamin with concern. "Benjamin, are you overthinking this? Erasing specific memories... it's almost unheard of."
"I'm not sure, but we can't be careless."
This matter was too important for Benjamin to overlook.
If he were still alone, he wouldn't care about his own life. But now, things were different. He had Sophia. His Sophia was delicate and soft, unable to bear any grievances. If he didn't prepare in advance, what would happen if those people hurt her?
Downstairs, Sophia had no idea Benjamin was worried about her safety. She was happily enjoying the food at the table. Sophia's eyes squinted with happiness as she ate her favorite dish.
Benjamin came downstairs and saw this scene.
Sophia, small and delicate, was leaning over the table, enjoying her meal and licking her lips with satisfaction. She looked like a little kitten that had just stolen some cream.
"Is it that good?" Benjamin sat down next to Sophia, amused by her.
Sophia nodded vigorously while chewing. "Delicious!"
"Eat slowly, no one's going to take it from you!" Benjamin said helplessly, pouring her a glass of water thoughtfully.
