Chapter 13 What Does a Dying Person Have to Fear?
In the study, Benjamin revealed Sophia's true identity to Preston.
Despite all his life experiences, Preston couldn't help but feel shocked.
He looked over at Sophia, his eyes welling up with emotion. He nodded excitedly, "Seems like you two were meant to be. Sophia really brings you luck. You'll definitely live a long life."
Benjamin frowned slightly and reminded him, "Grandpa, my marriage to Sophia has nothing to do with those old superstitions."
"Regardless of any agreements with the Brown family, Sophia is now my lawful wife."
"Alright, alright. That was my mistake."
Preston walked over to Sophia, trying to contain his excitement as he asked, "Sophia, to be honest, our family has been searching for your teacher for years. Benjamin's condition can't be delayed any longer."
Sophia shook her head, troubled. "My teacher isn't in the country. He's gone to Lumaria to visit friends. I don't know when he'll be back."
Preston's face fell, and the hope that had just risen in his heart vanished instantly.
Benjamin's expression remained unchanged, as if he had long accepted his fate.
At that moment, Sophia's tone shifted. "But I can give it a try."
She looked at Benjamin, her clear eyes sparkling with determination. "If you trust me, I can help you."
"That's ridiculous!" Preston's voice was stern. "I've sought out countless renowned doctors from around the world, and none could cure Benjamin. How could someone your age have that kind of ability?"
Sophia had just turned twenty.
The medical experts Preston had encountered were all in their fifties or sixties, with years of experience.
"I'm not joking. I know everything my teacher does. Grandpa, I'm really good at this!"
Preston still shook his head, his face stern.
He didn't trust Sophia's abilities and couldn't bear to let Benjamin take the risk.
However, Benjamin agreed. "Grandpa, let her try."
Preston glared at Benjamin. "How can you go along with this nonsense?"
Benjamin's tone was indifferent. "I'm already on the brink of death. What do I have to fear? Let's try it. What if... it works?"
In truth, he didn't hold much hope for the outcome.
As a child, he had dreamed of living a normal life.
But all he got was disappointment, time and time again.
Since he was already close to death, what harm was there in trying?
Even if it failed, could things get any worse?
Benjamin's lips curved slightly, a cold, indifferent smile on his face.
Sophia sensed the change in Benjamin's mood and quickly grabbed his arm, her voice firm. "I will cure you."
Benjamin looked down into her slightly reddened eyes.
Her clear eyes were filled with worry and determination.
Benjamin felt a warmth in his heart and responded softly.
Seeing Benjamin's resolute attitude, Preston sighed deeply.
This stubbornness—he didn't know where it came from.
"Sophia, how confident are you? Can you really cure Benjamin completely?"
Sophia touched her chin, thinking for a moment. "About seventy percent. But it might take some time."
"Honey, don't worry. Even if I can't cure you completely, I can extend your life by thirty or forty years. Trust me!"
Benjamin looked at Sophia's serious expression and couldn't help but smile.
Thirty or forty more years.
He had never dared to dream of that before.
But Sophia spoke casually, with certainty.
Without a hint of hesitation, Benjamin replied, "Alright, I trust you."
Preston looked at Sophia and Benjamin, speechless for a moment.
One dared to say it, and the other dared to believe it.
As long as there was a glimmer of hope, they couldn't give up.
"Grandpa, can I borrow some paper and a pen?" Benjamin walked around his desk and took out a sheet of paper and a pen.
"What are you doing?"
Benjamin didn't answer. His elegant hand held the pen, quickly writing something on the paper.
Sophia once again found herself admiring Benjamin.
Her husband even looked handsome while writing!
Benjamin's tall figure bent slightly, his suit wrinkling a bit with the movement.
But it only added to his elegant charm.
Sophia clenched her fist.
She had to cure him!
Soon, Benjamin put the pen down and looked up, meeting Sophia's shining eyes.
He chuckled softly.
Did she really like him that much?
So much so that she stared at him all the time.
"Come here." Benjamin beckoned.
Sophia quickly stepped forward.
Benjamin handed her the paper, his voice serious. "This is a waiver. If anything goes wrong during the treatment or if the results are unsatisfactory, it's my personal choice and has nothing to do with you."
Sophia stared at the waiver in her hand, momentarily at a loss for words.
Was this what it felt like to be trusted unconditionally?
Benjamin reached out and gently ruffled her hair. "Sign it, just in case."
He trusted Sophia, but he didn't trust the rest of the White family.
Downstairs, Amelia was restless.
She sat on the couch, glancing towards the study upstairs from time to time.
After about ten minutes, Preston finally came downstairs.
Amelia quickly stood up and approached him.
Her usually composed face showed signs of anxiety. "Dad, what did you talk about? Where's Benjamin?"
Preston pointed upstairs and spoke softly to Amelia. "Benjamin and Sophia's marriage is settled. I'm very pleased with Sophia. So, watch your words and actions from now on."
Seeing Amelia's face change, Preston continued, "I know you never liked Benjamin, but he just got married today. As his mother, even if you can't be warm and friendly, don't cause trouble."
Amelia opened her mouth to argue, but Preston turned away and instructed Finn, "Get the medicine listed on this paper as soon as possible."
Finn, knowing Sophia's identity, brightened up at the mention of medicine.
He quickly took the paper. "I'll go right away."
'Great. Mr. White is saved!' Finn thought happily.
Upstairs, Sophia clung to Benjamin's arm, her soft body pressed against his.
Her eyes were clear and innocent.
She seemed unaware of how intimate her actions were to the usually aloof Benjamin.
Benjamin looked down, struggling to resist the urge to push her away.
