Chapter 30 Jealous

“Caroline doesn't want me to touch her?" Nicholas smiled triumphantly. Her behavior showed that she was becoming more concerned about herself and didn't want him to get close to other women.

"Our Caroline is still a little jealous pot." Caroline refused to speak.

Caroline had thin skin, and although her face was red with no strength to refute what was said, Nicholas did not let her go. Seeing that she was really angry, he hugged her and comforted her.

As for Eva's crying and making a scene after being sent to the hospital, asking for Nicholas to come to see her, Nicholas ordered someone to send flowers instead. If it weren't for their cooperation, he wouldn't even bother with pleasantries.

After lying in bed for a week, Eva could barely walk on her feet. She blamed Caroline for the mistake and actively applied with her father to go work at the construction site.

With David unable to handle the commotion anymore, he agreed. When Eva arrived at the construction site determined to cause trouble for Caroline, she saw Caroline wearing a safety helmet as soon as she got there.

"Caroline has good tactics."

Just as Caroline finished arranging the work schedule and turned around, she met Eva who ignored her foot injury and wore a pair of red high heels. Although they matched well with her jade feet in red color but it wasn’t appropriate here.

The person in charge of the construction site knew that this was a spoiled young lady who had been pampered all along; so he asked someone else to help support her over next door before discussing issues with Caroline further.

Although winters in Los Angeles were cold despite having small snowflakes which felt like needles piercing through one’s face when hit by cold winds. After only a short while, Eva couldn't stand it anymore and complained about the cold. The person in charge had to send someone to find her some clothes.

"You go find me some clothes. I won't wear anything that others have found." Caroline had expected that she was not just here to check on the project's progress.

The person in charge didn't know about the relationship between Caroline and Mr. Nicholas, but he knew that Eva was David's daughter. He looked at Caroline with difficulty, but Caroline patted his shoulder to indicate that everything was fine.

She bought a down jacket for her from a mall, "I know you have opinions of me, but this is a construction site, not a place for you to throw tantrums."

"You..." Ignoring Eva’s reaction, Caroline took out her phone and began checking the weather forecast.

This time they were cooperating on a five-star hot spring resort hotel project which was expected to be completed by next spring when flowers bloomed. However, this winter's weather was unpredictable; there would be sunshine in the morning and blizzards in the afternoon.

Due to weather conditions delaying their progress, the person in charge worried they wouldn’t complete it by next spring so he wanted them to rush through work. But Caroline held opposing views.

"I don't think we can do it under these circumstances because first of all there are safety issues for workers; secondly even if we rush through work quality cannot be guaranteed." Since Nicholas asked her to take responsibility then she must finish beautifully.

"But...”

"But how can you be sure that there will be a blizzard tonight? If we cannot complete the project within the specified time frame, the person in charge will bear the main responsibility. This is not a small amount of money." Eva interrupted the person in charge and crossed her arms, looking at Caroline contemptuously.

"That's right, Caroline, I can't afford to take this responsibility if it goes over schedule," she added.

"We can catch up on work after the weather improves slightly. In addition, I will report this situation to Mr. Nicholas. We cannot joke about people's lives no matter what," Caroline said.

Caroline understood that it was difficult for the person in charge but with such weather conditions, if something unexpected happened, not only would workers' safety be compromised but it would also affect Johnson family's reputation which was not a simple issue.

Although she wasn't sure whether there would be a blizzard tonight or not as now it seemed like the weather was slowly clearing up despite today's forecast showing otherwise. She had been observing for several days and found that weather forecasts were accurate.

"I don't think there will be any problems. Trust me; we can catch up on work tonight since the weather is so good," she said while adjusting her clothes.

The person in charge also thought that there wouldn't be any problem with regards to the weather especially since Caroline was just a secretary whereas Eva was David’s daughter who could easily complain about him to her father which could lead him to lose his job as well.

Although Caroline disagreed initially but eventually agreed to catch up on work tonight before rushing back to discuss with Nicholas who unfortunately had gone out for fieldwork and returned late around eight or nine o'clock at night when dark clouds covered sky pouring down drizzling raindrops outside their office building

"You seem troubled; is everything okay?" Nicholas took off his rain-soaked coat and handed it to the servant. He had not brought an umbrella with him, so he got wet in the rain.

"What do you think of today's weather?" Caroline sat on the sofa wearing her pajamas, staring at her computer screen intently until she heard Nicholas's voice.

Nicholas approached her and saw that she was looking at a weather forecast which made him laugh. "When did you start paying attention to the weather? It's raining outside, but you don't care about me.

Caroline noticed that his hair seemed wet, so she quickly had someone bring a towel over and handed it to Nicholas. However, he didn't take it and instead looked at her with a poised expression saying, 'Help me dry my hair.' As soon as he finished speaking, Caroline placed the towel directly on his face. Nicholas reluctantly took off the towel. This little woman was becoming more and more willful.

Feeling like she might have gone too far, Caroline snatched the towel from him. Nicholas's hair was different from others; he always carried himself in an overbearing manner while exuding deep affection. His hair was soft and fine. She gazed out of the window at the gray sky.

Nicholas enjoyed special treatment but could clearly sense that she seemed somewhat anxious and uneasy. He raised his head to hold Caroline's hand and pulled her down beside him regardless of whether it was work-related or something that happened before; Caroline did not want to talk about it with him which made him feel defeated.

Caroline who did not understand what he was thinking hesitated for a moment; this matter should indeed be discussed with Nicholas but until now there had only been light rain outside - could her judgment be wrong?

Just now when she saw him come back looking tired, there was some faint heartache in her heart - she didn't want him to worry about work after coming home.

"Caroline, haven't I told you before that anything you encounter has me behind your back?"

"I...I think there are some problems on-site." Unable to bear to see the disappointment on his face especially since Nicholas should know about this matter already, Caroline told him about the issues discussed with those responsible for construction sites.

As soon as they finished talking, a flash of white light cut through the densely overcast sky followed by thunderous roars like that of a fierce tiger. Then came the pouring rain.

Caroline quickly stood up to open the window and check the situation, but as soon as she opened it, a strong wind accompanied by rain hit her hard and soaked her through. Without thinking too much about it, she picked up her phone to call those responsible for construction sites.

Work must be stopped immediately in such terrible weather conditions. Before she could even dial out, the phone rang.

"Caroline, something bad has happened!"

Without even having time to change clothes, Caroline rushed outside only to be pulled back by Nicholas who said: "Put on some clothes; I'll take you there." He had also received news that something had gone wrong at the construction site.

When they arrived at the scene, reporters had already surrounded the area. As soon as Nicholas squeezed his way through them he began asking questions left and right trying to get any useful information so he could make tomorrow's headlines - chaos reigned supreme on-site.
